What are some older games (NES-PS1) that are great, but didn't get as much attention as more well-known games?

I can't truly say whether this game was underrated or not, but I think I would say River City Ransom for the NES.

How could Chrono Trigger be UNDERRATED? To you it must be the best game of all time (by a longshot) then, no offense, and I'm pretty sure FF6 is pretty popular.

 

The Gex series was definitely underrated (PS11 and N64 were the same gen so). It's a series I've heard nobody but myself comment on. Quite a surprise to me nobody picked it up. Guess they thought it'd be too corny or something I don't know.

Anachronox is underrated, great and funny western rpg with a lead character named "Sly Boots".
