I've got to go with Wario, aka the Great W as I call him at times as a nickname. Wario has the best dialogue whenever he speaks and consists of him bragging about how much better he is compared to Mario. He also can transform into pretty much anything when his body makes contact with certain things.

He might be the least-practical to use in Super Mario 64 DS, but it's still pretty awesome to see him punt a Goomba halfway across the entire Course, carry King Bob-Omb around like just a feather, get treated like a legit bad@$$ in everyone's dialogue, etc.

You also have to give Wario credit for the successful WarioWare series and of course his obsession over money. He will do anything to get his grubby hands on any kind of treasure and secure it away somewhere where no one other than him can see it.

Luigi.  Luigi's god-tier.  Part why he's so great is because I like underdogs.  He's interesting, funny and I like his shy and kind demeanor.  I used to have a huge crush on him so he's always going to have a special place in my heart.  I even dressed up as him a few times when I was 7.

Aside from Daisy, he's the one character I like playing as in the Mario games.  I have a cute plush of him too.

Mario is underrated, he's not my favorite but he deserves some love.

Luigi. I want Paper Luigi as chronicled in The Thousand Year Door, yo.

Out of all the Mario characters he's the only mainstay besides Bowser with any humanizing elements. The rest, especially Mario himself, are so flat it's almost boring.

Well, that too.

But if Mario's not the greatest game character in history, no one is.

I can name at least three characters that fill that slot. I can name literally hundreds that are better than Mario.

Say what you want about how popular Mario is but it's a fact that Mario himself is an incredibly dull character. Almost intentionally so. His simplicity makes it so his "personality" doesn't run against the player's impression of the game but even in his own RPGs, games built with an actual story in mind, he's far overshadowed.

And even from a gameplay perspective he is incredibly simple, to the point of almost being a bad choice. In the Mario series alone he is average in nearly every way where Luigi can jump higher and Peach can hover in the air and whatnot. Among other game choices Mario may have set the groundwork for many common elements such as running faster leading to longer jumps but there's little he can do that isn't overshadowed by other platformers. From Megaman X's dashes and much more functional wall jumping to Spyro's gliding and hovering mechanics.

Mario may have been an influence but comparing him to any other game or character in history he will inevitably end up losing in any significant contest of character design.

He's 'a Luigi, number 1! I have to go with the mighty Luigi. I have always considered him my favorite ever since Mario Kart 64. Second place goes to Wario, just because he is hilarious. "Imma Wario, Imma gonna win!" XD Plus he has a great catalogue of games. Now Luigi needs more games. Been playing through the new Luigi's Mansion game, Dark Moon and I am loving it.

You do realize that this is all subjective, right?  I have no issue with you not liking Mario as a character (as a child I hated him) but this is topic is pure opinion.  There's no right or wrong answer.  You may as well agree to disagree because I don't see how explaining why you don't enjoy a character is going to add anything to the discussion.

No offense, I don't mean to come off as a jerk, it just seems immature to act as if Mario's likability is something so objective when it isn't.  You don't have to consider him the greatest character in video games but that doesn't mean others can't.

I'm sorry if I come off as a jerk, I just find it immature when people argue over things like this.

I'd have to go with Wario. He's so strong and cool. I used to love to carry things around like they were nothing in Super Mario 64 DS. Plus WarioWare is an insanely fun game...

I especially like WarioWare D.I.Y.

Pretty much the beta version of Super Mario Maker, IMO.

They should consider making a sequel to WarioWare D.I.Y but with more features and an easier explanation on how to use certain functions to make your own micro games work.

No shit liking Mario is subjective. That doesn't mean any of what I said is any less true, many of my points are very objective observations such as, and I quote, "In the Mario series alone he is average in nearly every way where Luigi can jump higher and Peach can hover in the air and whatnot."

Also, this is a topic discussing who one likes more out of the four listed. It adds everything to the discussion to explain exactly why Mario is or isn't the best character out of the four. I simply took it a step further and expanded to all of gaming rather than just the four listed to explain my point.
