Is it weird that the mane 6 adult women hang out with Spike who is a teenager?

He's not only Twilight's assistant, he's also kind of like her little brother...possibly a bit like her son. I think the best way to describe their relationship is that she's like an older sister who has to take on a bit of a parental role. The others in the mane 5 probably only originally hung around him because of him being with Twilight.

 

 Of course, then he started helping Rarity around at the boutique, and he can dig up gems on gem hunts too which obviously Rarity finds useful so she grew a soft spot for him and started to enjoy his company, plus the rest of the group probably noticed he is a bit mature for his age. Having friends older or younger than you might be viewed as strange by some people, but there's nothing really wrong with it, and those friendships can still be plenty great.

 

Pretty sure the age gap between him and the others isn't as huge as some people think it is anyway. Yeah, I know. He's a "Baby" dragon, but he doesn't really seem to be a baby. I'd say he's a baby by dragon standards maybe, but by pony standards...Yeah, he's probably a teenager or so, Twilight hatched him when she was still young after all.

But then Discord and Big Mac hang out with him. Big Mac is at least three or fours years older than Apple Jack. Which would mean he's at least 23 or 24 assuming Apple Jacks twenty. Also Discord is probably several thousand years old. His objection to play with Spike wasn't because Spike was a teenager it was because Discord thought he was superior.

It's not entirely impossible Spike might feel the same compared to Twilight at times, despite being a hero in his own right to the Crystal Ponies.

 

As for Discord...If he discriminated by age, he wouldn't have very many people to hang out with, would he? Celestia and Luna probably, and the rest of the super old characters are all villains. He's way older than the mane six as it is. Not to mention, despite being that old, he's kind of like a big, nearly all-powerful child himself. On the inside anyway. In the comics he's also really good friends with the CMC, and even an honorary member, and he fits right in with his goofy antics.

actually...  one of my neighbors who moved away was one of my best friends, and she was i think 19 or 20 when she left and i was around... 13 or 14 (i forgot how old exactly). i was a teen and had an adult hang out with me x3 i wish she didn't move away though...

 

it isn't really that much of a age gap if you think about it. if you have a really old person hang out with a teen then yeah, it would be creepy. but a teen with a 20 year old isn't that creepy.

Unusual in the world of chemicals, physics, and human social constructs yes. Of course, I assume that is the basis of the question since it appears to aporoach the issue with a cultural comparison or (dare I say) indictment. It may be odd in some cultures here, but perhaps not in Equestria.

 

So I suppose the real question should be, is this a bad thing in Equestria? I would posit that it isn't, primarily because we can assume that their civil society is built on a much different paradigm than us, and while relation and personality shortcomings are in adequate supply, the dangers they face seem to be strictly magical or natural phenomena, not criminal.

Not really. It's worth noting that just 2 centuries ago a teenager was expected to raise children and fight in wars. That age boundary is a recent invention, and only in a certain amount of countries.

That was the main point, yeah. He was envious of Applejack for getting to be AB's hero. That said, he also called himself "Nothing special, Nopony's hero" at one point, so while I think wanting to spend time with his sister and have her look up to him again was the main point, I get the feeling there was a bit more to it than that.

 

 Also fits in with episodes like "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep", and "Dungeons and Discord's" where Big Mac always envisions himself as something like a brave unicorn knight, or even an Alicorn.
