cider float 2,539 December 20, 2016 Share December 20, 2016 (edited) I found something interesting. There was a character in the increasingly popular game Overwatch named "Sombra." I always thought the name Sombra meant Somber as in a form of sadness. But from Overwatch's Sombra's accent and her ending comment "Adios" lead me to understand that Sombra meant something else in Spanish, so I looked it up as Spanish and it meant this. Sombra Meaning in Spanish Shadow or Shade. In other parts of google it seems Sombra also refers to a dark/shady part of a ring in a bullfight. Anyway I accept the Shadow/Shade part of it and the bullfighting part kind of hinted me into thinking it also means a meaning for more covert/hidden means (the Overwatch character's abilities, background and personalities all hint this out as well). So it doesn't just mean shade and shadow but can mean an adjective for covert/hidden things done in the shadow. Could this mean King Sombra can possibly be Spanish or Latin American as a pony? Not all Spanish/Latin Americans have an accent but it wouldn't hurt to give him an accent too. Maybe sound like Zorro or Bane (Batman). Somber can still stand as a meaning though as the Crystal Ponies were very depressed and somber from his influence. Or King Dart because we only saw him as a giant black fart. Signature made by Kyoshi.

I'm surprised about a thread like this when probably half of the fandom already knew that fact as soon as the episodes aired . Anyway, Sombra is spanish for shadow indeed, but I don't think it's because he's from a Spanish speaking equivalent, but because giving a powerful pony a name in a foreign language gives some air of power. Celly and Luna's names are in latin (although in Luna's case, in many languages with latin roots also, Spanish among them), and I'm sure umbra, it's latin meaning, was considered, but I guess it didn't ringed as well as sombra . The comic writers DID notice his name theme, as in Siege of the Crystal Empire, the umbrum's names are also in spanish (rabia=anger, ira=wrath) 2 Sig by Discords
Jeric 46,880 December 20, 2016 Share December 20, 2016 Yes his name means shadow in Spanish or Portuguese. Even more interesting is that Umbra is both Latin and Romanian for shadow. Spanish is a partial derivative of Latin. Sombra came from Umbra. In the IDW comics Sombra came from Umbrum or the living shadows.

Baykush 328 December 21, 2016 Share December 21, 2016 When I first watched that episode in Spanish I actually thought they had translated his name. Another name that can be translated from Spanish is Luna, which means moon. Those are latin roots, not necessarily Spanish, Sombra also means shadow in Portuguese, and in Italian it's Ombra. As for Luna, it also means moon Italian and in Portuguese it's Lua. Personally, I think the writers were just looking for a cool sounding name, and Sombra sounds pretty cool. cmarston1 5,962 December 21, 2016 Share December 21, 2016 (edited) Given his shadow motif, I am pretty sure that this was intentional when naming his character Edited December 21, 2016 by cmarston1
Foxy Socks 2,602 December 21, 2016 Share December 21, 2016 (edited) I wouldn't be surprised. I like his name though, it sounds cool, and the meaning fits him well.
