gaming Is the MMORPG genre dying?

Would you say it is? I feel that there is more MOBAs now, that and FPS games are like the only games nowadays. And as this video said MMORPGs changed into MOBAs.... but I say no MOBAs miss a lot of things from MMORPGs. MOBAs are just glorified MMORPG PvP duel arenas. MMORPGs is about a vast world where you run quests and interact with other players like they're other inhabitants of a virtual world. That does sort of draw a big stinking black line across them.

Also what's with whenever I hear someone talk about the worst MMORPG they've ever played and the reason they thought it was the worst was simply because of one really small detail, a very small sometimes unimportant detail why they said it was the worst. It wouldn't make it the worst, just not your favorite but not the worst as they still have a lot of redeeming qualities.

Not only MMORPGs, RTSs are dead because of MOBAs. To play MMORPGs, you need to invest your time and stamina for your characters, grinding and stuffs, and you are still weak ;/. MOBAs are fair and balance, everyone started at level 1, skills are more displayed in the match, he stronger than you? Doesnt matter, you will rekt him in another match, require no long term character build up, just pick powerful heroes and rekt people. In short, people nowaday prefer more fast-paced gameplay, less grinding, more competitive and more skill displayed, the one who get the most gears in the game compare to a guy who can rampage the whole enemy team and make a big comeback, who is more entertainment to watch, i choose the latter.

Actually I don't like the whole "whoever played the longest is the best" as well but come on MMORPGs should still be kept alive. Going through a virtual world doing quests and finding lore is so much fun. I feel they sort of ruin MMORPGs when they put so much emphasis on PvP but sometimes that's the only thing they can do sometimes. It's a real dilemma.

It depends on what games though. Maple Story is declining since people wanted the pre-BB back and not to mention a lot of people quit for their reasons including hackers & botters and nexon's fails and abiding their time on the fixes.. For Final Fantasy XI, I don't know about that cuz i've been offline for years now and i haven't gotten update on the game from my friends who still play the game lately.

I've often felt this was true as someone who loves to play mmorpg's. It seemed like at one point in time new mmorpg's were constantly being released and now it's moba's and FPS, both types I'm not a fan of.

I was also not a fan of the big bang patch in Maplestory, that was around the time I quit the game.

I hope so, honestly. I've always felt that the MMORPG genre was pretty stupid. I mean why would I pay out the wazoo EVERY MONTH just to play a mediocre RPG with additional features I don't care about (that probably make the experience worse, honestly)? Even the free-toplay ones I feel are kind of unnecessary. I just don't like the idea of playing an RPG online. It feels totally wrong. MMORPGs had their time in the spotlight anyways a good 10 years ago before the rise of FPS games and later the rise of MOBAs.

By the way Original Poster, you are way wrong in saying MOBAs and FPSes are basically the only genres being made. What about Shovel Knight, Undertale, Yooka-Laylee, Fallout (true it does retain FPS elements, but it's really more RPG),  and Far Cry, and a lot of other games? Sure MOBAs and FPSes are becoming more popular in the gaming community than other genres because of the competitive scenes (which are not worth participating in due to the emotional repercussions of dealing with complete morons when trying to climb the ladder), but that doesn't mean that they are completely taking up the whole industry now.

Also, the OP is completely wrong about what a MOBA is. What if I told you that MOBAs are actually primarily STRATEGY games? *Gasp*. What if I also told you, the objective in a MOBA is way different than just killing? *GASP*. WHAT IF I TOLD YOU EVERY SINGLE MOBA IS FREE TO PLAY??? *GAAASSSPP* -_- You get the point. The OP's perspective is totally skewed.

Short answer: No

Long answer: Not quite. Rather the genre has plateaued due to the lack of significant improvements in the way MMORPGs are designed. The market has been flooded with so many MMORPGs that play out almost identically to each other. The only immediately noticeable differences lay in the lore and aesthetic design of each game. Because of this, most people who play MMORPGs hesitate to jump ship because of the time they've invested in their current MMO. Why start a new MMO if you're not really getting a game thats significantly better? So while there are still plenty of MMOs around, their player base is generally focused on a few specific titles.

So with all that said, it's not entirely out of question for the MMO genre to make  resurgence once a new title makes significant improvements on the usual design.

Lastly as a side note, do not think that the rise of MOBAs has anything to do with the lack of new RTS' and MMOs. The MOBA genre is significantly different to your base RTS and MMO. While it shares a few simple aspects, it doesn't exactly scratch the same itch that a good RTS or MMO does.

I consider WOW to be a good game. But its too long for me. Good but too long, like most MMORPGs.

In either case i think the problem is most MMORPGs are more or less the same as wow, questing, leveling up, raiding, nothing new to say the least. I enjoy games i can come back to, not to obsess over because then i feel i never get out of my room. Pokemon for example i dont feel makes me obsessed, its a game i can put down and play again, a pretty simple game.

But that is just to my taste.

Not sure, but I doubt that it's dying with how many gamers play Black Desert and how famous Bless Unleashed was when it was first released.

I would think that they are thriving, there are an ever increasing amount of mmorpg games. That and you know many players are very faithful to their respective game. So many of them have some devoted users, though of course with there being so many games like that there are going to be many that are not as good games as the others.

I don't think so. For example, FF14 just sold out of digital download codes it's so popular. They might just be a little less special now that basically every game is online.

The MMORPG genre will probably never die unless online gaming itself dies. Like, the fact that WoW and OSRS are still as massive as they are and have been around for 15 and 20 years respectively is kind of a testament to how much staying power the genre has. There will ALWAYS be a market for grindy achievement-oriented online games and especially ones with a huge social aspect and RPG elements.
