Ponies and ancient magic

Since when did runes have Greek origin? If anything they are more Norse, although they have variations all over the world within many different individual cultures. And not just in magic.

As for your broader question, some unknown races might use them.. Zecora seems to practice some variation of voodoo and the sort, so it is always possible there are other forms of magic being utilized we are unaware of.

I haven't seen anything to suggest that runes exist in Equestria.

but every type of magic we've seen is modern day. (Sans the EoH) I'm talking about ancient, even before EoH era magic (remember, ponies didn't always know harmony, because they hadn't migrated to Equestria) (pre-HWE era)

Ah how we name concepts of antiquity and assume a vacuum of culture exists. Mediterranean runes have an even older suspected origin.

There is limited information in the show to suggest a runic influence. Using Daring Do may be a good avenue if they needed to explore that. I honestly hope they don't. Magic is best left as mysterious as possible (see Star Wars).

don't be a party pooper, Jeric. Just because there's limited info in the show doesn't mean speculation and imagination can't run wild. Just like that doesn't stop theory on Sunbutt and Luna's parents. No show evidence, but we still speculate

So what? I never said Greece never had any runes/runestones.. I said they were not the original origin. A lot of sources speculate Scandinavia as a more likely source.. although honestly i don't think that is correct either and the origins of many go much further back than that. If you look at almost any old culture you can find some information on runes and runestones used at some point or another, especialy when it comes to runes. Also you specifically mentioned runes and not runestones in your opening post... so which is it? Runes and runestones are two different things.

Greeks didn't practice rune magic. Theirs was more chthonic for lack of a better word. Many in ancient Europe used primitive letters that were easy to chisel into stone aka runes. However, I don't think any of Greek alphabets is considered as runes though they do share some resemblance.

When it comes to magic, runes are not magic objects per se. They are signs with certain attributes which can be evoked with voice or writing. And since traditional magic doesn't rely on cranial protrusions or sentimental bullshit, anyone could potentially learn how to use runes. That means any sod could, like, buy a disenchanting rune arrow and noscope that powerful unicorn through the barrier.
