Lenny 250 March 18, 2017 Share March 18, 2017 (edited) Ignore this thread, I realize that I am just mad at the people uploading it as they pretty much steal it, and they are getting the views and such. Im just a bit frustrated, and made this thread. I'm getting a mod to remove it when I can, but for now, don't post. Thanks. GeekySonic 1,151 March 18, 2017 Share March 18, 2017 Yeah, I don't give a crap anymore. If it hadn't been on YouTube, I never would have watched it. Besides, I can't acquire all of the episodes on DVD, so If I want to watch new episodes, it's YouTube or nothing. Also, I would be fine if they ended it. But that's a whole 'nother debate. 1 Check out my voice-acting demo reels on Casting Call Club, if you'd like.
Jeric 46,880 March 18, 2017 Share March 18, 2017 I'll bite, because this is always a fun debate. What is the primary revenue source for My Little Pony? How many full episodes can be easily found on YouTube? The OP missed salient details. Another one: Why does Hasbro not aggressively go after derivative videos from fans like Disney and Viacom? The answer to those questions may illuminate the discussion a little. Or maybe not. Depends on how important personal biases are to you I suppose. Lenny 250 March 18, 2017 Author Share March 18, 2017 True, but it's taking all their ad revenue. It wouldn't be a show anymore if it's not on TV, if it gets cancelled due to lack of traffic. That'd be a hit to the revenue in some way or another.

Barpy 2,226 March 18, 2017 Share March 18, 2017 Most of the MLP videos revenues get instantly marked by Hasbro, so all the money goes to them. All the songs, all the clips from the show uploaded on youtube are claimed by them and all money goes to them. Firedog 321 March 19, 2017 Share March 19, 2017 (edited) Not sure if your talking about fan content or people who do blind commentarys / upload episodes to youtube. If you upload a MLP episode to youtube it's stealing. regardless if you add your commentary it is still illegal redistributing episodes. However does hasbro care?: I don't think so. They can easily tell youtube to give a copyright strike to all matched youtube content for there brand. But they don't. Often, however, they will choose to monetize content that is matched with there brand to get them ad revenue. Which is one of the options Youtube gets you for brand matching. They will often do that instead of giving a copyright strike and taking down the video. Sometimes they do nothing, sometimes not. For example, hasbro gave strikes to people uploading leaked episodes to youtube. Then after the episode officially aired, no one received strikes for that episode. There is also the fact that they have stated ratings don't matter to them as long as people are buying the merchandise. They are a toy company, so there main focus is getting there merchandise to sell. The tv show is an advertisement for there merchandise. The revenue from people buying the episodes doesn't make them all there money (Some certainly). But the bulk of money comes from the merchandise sales. I usually don't pay for episodes. But I buy plenty of merchandise. The main reason I don't pay for episodes is because I like to see them as soon as possible. So I usually watch them live on a streaming site. llamalauncher 84 March 19, 2017 Share March 19, 2017 If someone is watching the episode through youtube they most likely dont have cable, or cant afford to buy the episodes. I dont' think it's hurting hasbro much since people still buy the toys 1 I made this Picture myself FYI
cuteycindyhoney 13,336 March 19, 2017 Share March 19, 2017 (edited) I don't get Discovery Kids (or whatever it's called) with the cable package I have. I'm not going to pay twice as much just for one program. I grab each episode as it comes out, within 24 hours on YouTube. Since I have the handy YouTube download add-on for Firefox, the MP4 is now forever mine. In the past, I kept it until a very good friend "acquired" the clean pop-up/watermark free file. Sadly, she passed away after a long illness. Now I'll just keep what I grab from YouTube. Frankly, I don't think of it as me doing any harm. Since I don't get the channel anyway, I'd never see the show if I didn't do this. Now if Hasbro would systematically release box sets for each season, I would snap them up! No, purely taken from air. No editS, no change, nothing. That isn't borrowing, especially if the person uploading it is getting views, subscribers, ext. LunarShadow 397 March 19, 2017 Share March 19, 2017 (edited) The way i see it, it hardly matters what outlet people use to watch My Little Pony. The point of the show is so Hasbro can market and sell toys. Toy sales is what fundamentally drives the series continuation. Official viewing numbers could be abysmal on cable networks but if toy sales are strong what difference does it make. I am pretty sure Hasbro would rather have someone at least watching the show and be potentially motivated to buy its merchandise and media rather than them not see it at all and not buy anything. Its the lesser of two evils. Pick your poison. Edited March 19, 2017 by DayShadow

sweetolebob18 728 March 19, 2017 Share March 19, 2017 TV stations pay a fee to the studio. They make money by selling ads. The show has 8 minutes of ad time. This sets a limit on how much they can afford to pay It costs the studio more to make the show than they can sell it for. They make their money by 1) Syndication 2) Merchandising + The movies, but that's separate I buy the DVDs as soon as they are available. I prefer to think of watching YouTube as previewing, not stealing. I DO buy them, I just watch them first
Firedog 321 March 19, 2017 Share March 19, 2017 Yes it is stealing. Yes, they do lose some money from it. It's also something to be expected in media industry. Pirating has happened since before the internet and always will. That's what merchandise is for. That's where the major $$ is made. Hasbro keeps there focus on getting merchandise sales instead of spending lots of money sueing people who upload them for free. Which is smart, because they making big bucks in merchandise. cmarston1 5,964 March 19, 2017 Share March 19, 2017 For the first three seasons, I watched the show on Youtube, however from season 4 onward I actually had Discovery Family/The Hub, and have been watching the show legally.
