Here I try to answer that question with some speculation of my own.

Its too early to say. The season won't end until AFTER the movie, which actually makes me think the finale might alter the status quo some. We really won't have any idea of what to expect until the Finale airs.

 

that being said, going to go out on a limb and expect the next season to continue following Starlight and her journey, most likely after she gets an EOH or similiar thing from the table (now that its calling her for missions and crap)

On that note, kind of annoyed, we STILL haven't gotten any actual explanation or purpose behind flurry heart being born and a new alicorn appearing, like how Celestia hinted at in the crystalling.

Haha I had a whole discussion with my buddy about this, so far every alicorn we've seen is a princess right? So what the heck is Flurry gonna be a princess of? What's her kingdom gonna be? Griffonstone???

She's technically a princess of the Crystal empire already by birth
But, going by the show, you can be a princess of an esoteric concept and not have to rule anything-- Twilight has no concrete "kingdom" for example, she just has a castle.

 

Could always have another kingdom show up out of nowhere like the crystal empire did, or kill the changelings independence and install flurry heart as their ruler.

I mean, Twilight's kingdom is baaaasically Ponyville, but yeah, good point. Flurry'll probably just be Cadence's heir.

I honestly want a bit darker storie. Like Gravity Falls, which had a dark sense of humour. I think that is really enjoyable.

Maybe it is going to be a little season 3 like season, which focuses mostly on Starlight. I feel it coming.

Regarding Flurry Heart:

It's not like Cadence has a long life span like Celestia and Luna do. Somepony will have to take care of the Crystal Empire after Cadence dies. That somepony will be Flurry Heart.

Problem with that theory is: You can't kill Cadance of old age without making the rest of the cast old as well

Assuming the background is not a placeholder, I could say that Tartarus will be somewhat involved. If Chrysalis either doesn't attempt her revenge this season, or she does and fails and escapes to plot ANOTHER revenge, I see her teaming-up with at least one other big bad. I don't see other candidates than Tirek
