What more is there for the Mane 6 to do?

Browsing through I don't think I saw this question narrowed down specifically out of future of the show questions;

What actually do you think is left for the Mane 6 to do in the show?

Im only 7 episodes in season 7, but already it seems like everyone had already reached their final goals of the main cast. Heck, I could even add the CMC to this query. Is there anything left of any significance to explore with these characters?

There is no such thing as a final goal in life.

Most of the character did what they wanted to do, and they will continue ascending in their positions, maybe RD will work to become captain of the wonderbolts

When a characters main goal is achieved, you give them new goals to work towards. Also, lets not pretend that before completing their "arcs" the mane 6 were ever really that focused on them. Not every Rainbow Dash episode was about becoming a Wonderbolt and in fact, most weren't.

The show will continue with them continuing to improve as characters and help others, achieving new goals and shooting higher and higher.

If you're asking that, then imagine what the writers are asking themselves. 

I like that they're actually achieving goals for the main cast, but I try to avoid guessing what's left so I can be pleasantly surprised with every new episode. I don't really even have any hopes for future content other than hoping more happens with Everfree Forest as a setting.

What should the Mane Six do it future?

 

• Twilight: become the most powerful magician in history, discover the secrets of Star Swirl, spread friendship everywhere, read more books.
• Rainbow Dash: become the leader of Wonderbolts, chillax.
• Rarity: expand her fashion empire, be fabulous.
• Fluttershy: reform a few more villains, learn how be assertive (for the 10th time).
• Pinkie Pie: establish more friendship embassies in the nearby lands, finally get her own place.
• Applejack: renovate the barn.

Jokes aside, I hope the future of the show will bring us more Equestria exploration, secondary characters backstories and lore expansion – all with the help of the Mane Six. That’s what I think is next for them.

I actually predicted that the show will focus on different characters and focus less on the mane 6.  They are kind of done.

Well, there's alot the Mane Six can do that involves other characters! Like for Rarity, she can use a reunion with Suri! And for Rainbow getting reunited for Lightning Dust and Wind Rider!

But really, perhaps the show should go through a new turn and focus more on the CMCs, Spike, Starlight, Discord, Big Mac, yunno the ones who always support the main cast that could use more development themselves! The Mane Six reached their goals, and in a way so did the CMCs! Of course there is more that the Mane Six can do, but perhaps for the time being, it would be best to focus more on the supporting characters, Spike, Discord, Zecora, Trixie, Starlight - yunno the ones who actually need it more than the Mane Six do at this time!

I would have agreed with this, but I'd say usually there has been a specific shift in focus and themes to drive more events. Seasons 1-2 were all about relationship building between the 6, 4 had a reoccurring theme of giving them foundation as teachers of their elements, season 5 had the 6 branching out to realize many of their reoccurring life goals, and then season 6 happened and it's more like stuff kind of happens around them.

Largely don't know that I see the Mane 6 have been given any more direction since. 

kind of thought that was what the cutie map was supposed to do for them; it might allow the Mane 6 to go off and shift to learning and sharing more with others; but the device seems to have fallen more to just a do-whatever-you-feel-like plot device for writers

Honestly... I prefer not talking about this. While episodes like it isn't the Mane thing about You or A health of Information definitely show that there is still something it can be done with the characters, it's also true that with an incompeteant like Haber at the head of writing things can get really bad for them, as we saw in S6 especially the finale (in S7 the head writers are Songco and Lewis, that's why aside a certain infamous scene for a certain Rainbow Pegasus, the S7 did much justice to the Mane 6 so far, at least for me. But With Haber returning in S8 my hopes got crushed and the sneak peak at the comic con gave me the final blow). I really care for the characters, but while I wish to see more from them, I certainly want to see them in a good way, not  as damzelleses in distress or worse, circus clowns.

In any case, I don't care anymore, I've already taken my decision. Let me just enjoy the five remaining S7 eps in peace and then I'm done.

Well season 8 does have both the Lady Writers and Haber being the story editors! So... maybe the Lady Writers are in charge of the Mane Six, while Haber can be in charge of everypony else who isn't a Mane Six, or a princess, cause the Lady Writers seem to do the princesses well too! So Haber can just stick with Spike, Starlight, Trixie, and of course Chrysalis! Cause season 6 was a big season for supporting characters! Maybe the both of them being the head-writers could work to the show's advantage to what needs to be done!

I'm not really sure that's true. Maybe Eric Rogers was confused when he said that Haber was CO-Story editor in S8 (even because, he said he wasn't in S7 at all, when it isn't true). So there is a good chance he did the story editing by his own... and frankly that's what I'm scared the most.

Let's just be positive! Even if Haber does it all on his own, I'm sure he wouldn't keep pushing aside the Mane Six. Pushing aside the Mane Six doesn't happen as often as people think. After all, this season belongs to them! This is the first season since early season 5 the Mane Six did something major together!

I actually don't particularly mind personally if this is the case. I'd almost prefer they do a clean break sequel with a revised focus if this were to happen, in fact.

Though, I am mostly just wondering strictly at the moment about any potential left in the stories of the classic cast. I've talked a lot over the seasons how I would kind of like it if the series could put more weight into adventure goals and multi part stories as it progressed to create some structure for more complicated stories regarding the 6.. Like, the comics do this alright sometimes, but the show has opportunity to this with internal continuity. Maybe that ship has sailed.

But other than that, I think it might still be possible to skew the traditional mane 6 balancing act heavily in favor of single characters aside from Sparkle for entire seasons. I guess that's more or less what Starlight is used for in the show now, but I dunno. Still feels like they could be more ambitious with many of the 5 supporting than a couple of episode plugs every season.

Of course there's still potential for the Mane Six! I'm confident the writers will think of something more to do with them! However, perhaps it could be best of the Mane Six had more continuity episodes than episodes like Honest Apple or 28 Pranks Later. I think we've reached past the point where it's time to stop making those random slice of life episodes, and focus more on story arcs. Story arcs that still contain slice of life, regardless, but also putting the finishing touches to certain arcs, and give other arcs more attention.

Like, the Daring Do arc, I think that one needs less attention, and Rainbow needs more time in developing with the Wonderbolts.

Agreed. As I suggest every time someone says that character 'x' arc is over ... I simply point to other long running character driven media like comic books. 

Dash -- a leadership role within the Wonderbolts. 

Applejack -- restart the Pear orchard

Rarity -- take on an apprentice, start a fashion school. 

Fluttershy -- Expand her sanctuary idea to other species' domains. 

Twilight -- I always suggested starting her own school ... and ... well ... 

Pinkie -- You have a wide open field with this one since she has never been shown to have a typical dream.

All seem like good ideas. I worry that the direction of the show tends to play it a little too safe at times to pull off the large changes in a way that make them feel very different from what's come before, but hey. You never know.

Gee, I dunno, maybe we could explore new angles of their relationships, or give more detail to their current positions, or even have them do something unusual every once in a while. They don't need to be constantly moving towards a specific goal. Above all else, I want to see the mane six just taking life as it comes, like real people. I'm getting tired of people perpetuating this idea that they have nowhere left to go.

There are many things for the characters to do, the possibilities are endless, the question is do writers want shake up the status quo? Every thing happen to the mane 6 right now are too smooth, Rarity got 3 shop, Dash become wonderbolt, Pinkie being Pinkie, AJ being AJ, Fluttershy got a dream from nowhere and she got it in one ep. How about throwing some obstacles at our mane characters? Just throw everything at them, they dare to burned Twilight house to the ground, they shaked the status quo twice, how about a third? Instead, they replied on new characters to come up with new stories and they are too busy with side characters now, i dont complain much if epidodes are good but seeing main characters are being push to the sideline make me sad a little bit. 

Random: Thorax's struggling as a leader made every strugglings of Twilight Sparkle as a princess in S4 like a pure joke, and Thorax just appear 3 times after To Where (his designs were being ridiculed at that time), he already one of the best side character. I care about his character development more than Twilight Sparkle, the main character, that says something.
