Why are the filmmakers of Toy Story 4 taking so long with the movie?

As some to most of you know, Toy Story 4 was first announced more than 3 years ago, in November 2014, and the film was delayed twice from its first release date. To make matters worse, most recently, Stephany Folsom replaced Rashida Jones and Will McCormack as the film's screenplay, so there's a chance the film will very likely be delayed again.

Now, the previous film, Toy Story 3, was first announced way back in November 2004, ten years before Toy Story 4 was, and that movie got released in June 2010. And of course, Toy Story 3 got delayed itself to that release date, except that happened in February 2007. So really, why couldn't they just delay the film now to June 19, 2020, since development of TS4 began exactly 10 years after TS3 did? Besides, there's two untitled films already slated for 2020 that one of them should get delayed itself.

Either way though, once the film comes out, it'll certainly get a 4K Ultra Blu-ray release, along with all the other three films.

I'm pretty sure they are highly intelligent individuals in their industry. Delays happen. Best to grin and bear it. The delay to TS3 led to a film I enjoyed quite a bit. Also I had to wait from 1983 to 1999 for new Star Wars and 2005 to 2015 for new Star Wars. I'm patient.

3 years is really not that long of a wait from announcement to release. As @Jeric stated,. there have been movies take more than 10 years to get to that point.

To be frank, the longer wait makes me a little more hopeful that it will actually be good.

You do have a point there. If they delayed the film one more time to June 19, 2020, it'd mark the 10th anniversary of Toy Story 3 and the 25th anniversary of the first Toy Story. Then they can release all four movies in 4K UHD Blu-ray, with Toy Story getting a new 25th Anniversary Edition!
