Graphite 80 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 (edited) Sorry if this is in the wrong place, feel free to move it if needed. I just thought i would share my opinion on how over used and out of context the word "Hate" is used when in most situations where it is used (particularity online) it would be more appropriate to say that they don't like it. Over the years of using forums, and YouTube i have noticed that a lot of people use the word "Hate" when referring to a game or television program/movie that they do not particularity care for, for example, many people claim to "Hate" Call of Duty or that they "Hate" My Little Pony, personally i wonder how someone comes to the conclusion that they hate a game or TV show/movie, especially because "Hate" is defined as: 'to feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward'. How has a person gone from just not liking a game or television show/movie to hating it? There are plenty of things in this world to hate, and games, movies, or TV shows are not things that deserve hate, you might not like them, but hopefully you don't hate them. When someone asks you what your opinion on a terrorist is and you say "I hate them" that is a perfectly reasonable response, but if the same person asked what your opinion on (insert movie/game/TV show here) and you respond with "i hate it", are you saying that the movie/game/TV show is as bad in your opinion as a terrorist? (btw i only used Terrorist as an example of something that the word hate can be appropriately applied) One of the main reasons i Hate the word "Hate" is because in most situations where is is used, its use creates an argument that would have been avoided if a more appropriate word was used. What are your thoughts on this topic? Edited May 24, 2012 by Graphite
The Awesome One 1,315 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 I think some people who have very limited vocabulary so they use the word ''hate'' because they don't know any other word.
FLARE 952 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 (edited) The word hate has lost meaning through over use, don't take it full on literally.... That's what prevents the 'arguments' in youtube comments. Edited May 24, 2012 by Flare^

Klopp 2,050 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 (edited) This thread has a distinct lack of ponies, therefor it does not belong in Sugarcube corner. Sure there are ponies in it, but the main focus is peoples inappropriate use of the word "Hate" (Totally agree there). Far more fitting for general discussion in Everfree Forest, as it is a discussion about your average non-pony stuffs. This is not an automatically generated message, cause we don't have a button for throwing things to General Discussion, so I had to painstakingly type this myself. Spaghetti 159 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 People tend to be overly extreme when it comes to controversial topics or media, such as MLP. I sincerely doubt that these people really despise MLP with such gusto, they are only trying to justify a point they are making. Could you not say the same for the word "love" as well? Because of the positive connotation, I don't normally have a problem when someone loves something. Honestly, the only thing that really gets on my nerves is when people call something "epic" or "amazing". It feels like those words have very little impact anymore. The word hate has lost meaning through over use, don't take it full on literally.... That's what prevents the 'arguments' in youtube comments. Youtube arguments are the equivalent of a child telling another child "My dad could totally beat up your dad" on the playground.
Starshine 16,333 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 hate/hāt/ Verb: Feel intense or passionate dislike for (someone): "the boys hate each other". Noun: Intense or passionate dislike: "feelings of hate". Synonyms: verb. detest - abhor - loathe - abominate - execrate - dislike noun. hatred - odium - abhorrence - detestation - loathing Whether you detest or loathe or just merely dislike something, it's still considered as 'hate' imo. The only difference between one hate and another is the intensity. Just because I couldn't bring myself to gouge my neighbour's eyes didn't mean I hate him

Lostwanderer 367 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 I find that people ofen have trouble expressing their emotions towards certain things and are trying to remain "cool", and so they can't say i think it's a 1/10, becasue that would come off as "lame", i find the term hate should be used for actually hating something and having a good reason for it, if you hate CoD because your a halo fan, you dont really hate CoD, if you hate CoD because you find it's gamepaly is dodgey or whatever, you dislike it, not hate it, If you hate CoD because it killed your family somehow or it is offensive to you in someway, then yes you'd hate it. The same can go for Love aswell. I think the phrase love and hate are highly overused these days.
Tom 891 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 What font is that? I do hate Call Of Duty because it is ruining the gaming industry(at least for first person shooters.) I have similar feelings here, but "ruining" may be a bit exaggerated. I think that hate has lost some of it's meaning, but still holds true when trying to convey dislike. I'd like to thank the MLP Vector Club for the images used in my avatar. Known as "Princess Mi Amore Cadenza", "Trixie the Great", "Tom" and "Tomzoid the EggDroid". Chill Mists (Chilly) 801 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 (edited) It is an easy word to say. One syllable. Easier and quicker than saying dislike. I am this lazy, the only time I bust out the polysyllabic words is when someone is annoying me and I want them to feel stupid. Bugz 159 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 There are people like me whose native language is not english and they use the simplest words available. Also I have learned 50% of my english skills using internet and media and when people here uses these kinds of words, it stucks with you too. I use words like "hate" and "amazing" a lot because of that.

Strafe 594 May 24, 2012 Share May 24, 2012 (edited) Well, people rarely intend to use hate as you defined it. The word "Hate", as most people use it, is more along the line of emphasizing that someone doesn't like something. Edited May 24, 2012 by Strafe "The Gods envy us.
