Good anime to start with?

Howdy folks!

So I have never seen any kind of anime ever and I'm curious as to why it's so popular.
What shows would you recommend I watch as an introduction to this type of show? I'm thinking of watching a few episodes to see what all the fuss is about!

Depends on what are you looking for in an anime it is quite broad genre.

Maybe good and popular overall ones to start with to get a decent impression on what anime is like are the likes of

One punch man

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Or Attack on titan

FLCL, Death Note, Neon Genesis Evangelion, My Hero Academia, Full Metal Alchemist

really you could pick any of those they're all great but like the above said it depends somewhat on what genre you like best. Hero academia and full metal are pretty accessible though

FLCL and Neon Genesis Evangelion might be bit heavy for a first time watcher or that is how I feel

I don't think I would've been able to appreciate those masterpieces as much if they had been my first anime

Though it can vary per individual some people can start up watching the likes of Legend of the Galactic Heroes as their first introduction to the genre some people on the other hand prefer more casual approach

It does vary because my first ('true') anime was death note :P

But seriously, there are so many genres in anime, thus it depends on your tastes. Without that information I can't recommend what I'd watch cause I don't want you to look like this:

It is a very broad genre with at least 40 years worth of shows to comb through.

So maybe start with brought a lot of the west into the fold.

  • Dragon Ball Z
  • Ronin Warriors
  • Sailor Moon
  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Naruto
  • One Piece
  • Bleach
  • One Punch Man
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
  • Yu-Yu-Hakusho
  • Gundam Wing
  • Outlaw Star
  • My Hero Academia
  • Tenchi Muyo
  • Fairy Tail
  • Avatar: The Last Air bender
  • Gurren Lagan
  • RWBY
  • Big O
  • Ruroni Kenshin
  • Fooly Cooly

A lot of these aired on Toonami back in the late 90s/ early 00s when it was on every day, and helped introduce a lot of western fans to the world of anime.

From personal experience I would half to recommend Fullmetal Alchemist, way back before watching it I knew little to nothing about anime then I one day I was browsing netflix after school and at the time I was really into the fantasy genre especially those with lots of magic stuff so I was browsing netflix for anything that had a lot of magic and wizards and stuff and what peeked my interest was Fullmetal Alchemist, while not fantasy it's more like steampunk but the story was awesome and will even tug at your heartstrings at times and there is lots of cool magic stuff, after that I also got into Fairy Tail, Soul Eater, The Legend of the Legendary Heroes, Hellsing, Black Lagoon,  and currently I'm into Sword Art Online, My Hero Academia, Little Witch Academia, Gamers!, and many others.

Really what it comes down to is personal preference, Anime isn't a genre it's a style so think of any genre of movies or video games you like the most and try to find an anime that has that genre

do you like zombies, then I would recommend Highschool of the dead, or maybe parasyte.

do you like Fantasy, then I recommend Fairy Tail, and The Legend of the Legendary Heroes.

do you like super heroes, then watch My Hero Academia.

do you like crime oriented action then maybe you will like Black Lagoon

or maybe you want something a little more slice of life, than maybe anime like Gamers!, Watamote, A Lie in April (<---- highly recommended), or Toradora.

your options are nigh limitless and choosing choosing what you wan't to watch really just depends on what sort of genres you like.

What genres do you tend to enjoy in other media?

Do you like funny slice of life shows? I suggest giving Toradora a try.

Do you like mysteries? I suggest Detective Conan.

Do you like stuff that really makes you think? I suggest Death Note.

Do you like horror or slasher films? Give Blood+ a try.

Do you like stuff along the lines of Voltron or Transformers? Perhaps you should give Gundam or Code Geass a try.

Do you like superheroes? Perhaps you should try Dragon Ball Z or My Hero Academia.

Do you like fun adventure stories? Try One Piece.

Do you like Equestria Girls? Try Sailor Moon or Pretty Cure.

Do you like fantasy? Give InuYasha a try.

Anime is so broad that you can find just about anything that fits your personal tastes if you're willing to try new things. :)
