general media Why do petitions never work?

They are disappointing. But if producers/creators/markets don't support the opinion, it's just not going to happen.

A petition is nothing more than a gauge of public opinion, the target of the petition is not bound in any way to act upon it.  If a company has discontinued a certain product they have probably done so for a good reason, or at least what they would consider to be a good reason, be that poor sales or low viewing figures for example.

  • 1 year later...

Once in 5th grade, we were learning about petitions so my class thought: “let’s make our own to fight for our own rights!”. It was pretty simple cause it was just to have better cafeteria food. We got the whole school in on it and it was great! Unfortunately, the petition didn’t go over well with the adults.

It made the lunch staff cry and the rest of the faculty upset. I remember we had a huge library meeting about it and the teachers were also telling us how some kids signed the petition because they were under the impression that the school would start serving McDonald’s in place of the regular food. It was sad that the petition lost, but at least they were proud of us for learning! :squee:

In this case, no, petitions were not helpful. We got ignored immediately because I guess they thought that we didn’t know any better since we were just the kids.
