I started using the ShadOBabe moniker in middle school, and to say I was a fan of Shadow’s would be a gross understatement...

But even though I'm not as huge a fan as I used to be, I still love the name and I still have a soft spot for my prickly edgelord. XD

The real world mythological creature probably wouldn't have gripped me nearly as much if I hadn't learned about it first through MLP of all things. It would just be another obscure creature to learn about. The Ahuizotl from MLP SPECIFICALLY is what caught my attention.

Mesoamerican lore is ignored a LOT in pop culture, unless your story needs some kind of wacky, villainous blood cult that makes human sacrifices.

So the fact that MY LITTLE PONY put a creature from Aztec myth... a creature that is known for mimicking the voices of scared children to lure in human victims that it then drowns and eats the eyes and fingernails of... into its canon... that just blows my mind. Obviously, even though he was a villain for most of the show, Ahuizotl was nowhere near that scary. But STILL. The only other franchise I know of that has ahuizotls in it is D&D.

And then there's the design they went with for him. It was so weird and different it caught my attention immediately. This jaguar-dog-gorilla hybrid with dark blue fur, a hand on its tail, and an extra long skull full of teeth. It's got this strange, primal, exotic thing going on. I'd literally never seen a design like it before. I loved it. And that's not even getting into his personality. which was my favorite part.

Ahuizotl's character is basically summarized as loud, bombastic, and in-your-face. He's got a big maniacal laugh, a Spanish accent, and enough strength to casually push over trees like blades of grass. I loved him before he had any glimmer of "redemption" at all. If he'd stayed as a cat-stroking, Bond-level force of evil forever, I would have been totally down. But the fact that he turned out to be a Guardian Spirit is so freakin charming too. <3

And so many people just kind of dismissed or ignored him. Or when they did acknowledge his existance it was to "fix" his design. And I was like, you know what, no. He's awesome, and I want to be that awesome... My sona is going to be a zotl and I'm gonna show everyone how awesome they are already. They don't need to be "fixed".

I wanted her to wear glasses, because I wear them, but the full sized glasses not only obscured her eyes, but looked funny balancing on her little nose.

Well I did. I want to play again, but my last group kind of sucked. I told them before I started that I wasn’t comfortable with sexual assault or rape or anything like that.

You're kidding, right? Believe me, I'm no stranger to exploring dark and taboo themes in what I write, but only if it adds something of substance to the story, whether it's plot or character-based. What, were they just doing it to be edgelords, and not the good kind like Shadow?

I think their excuse was that we kicked off the campaign captured by drow and they REALLY HATED my normal high elf character and wanted to hurt AND humiliate her.

Seemed like it. My memories are a bit hazy. I have a memory of there being another DM during the “dark” game. So maybe he just didn’t know how I felt. But he was a friend of the players I HAD told my feelings to, and they didn’t obviously didn’t see fit to tell him.

I didn’t play with them anymore after that session. But I do miss playing.

Honestly, they sucked for other reasons too. I let it pass the first time since it was my first ever character, but they wouldn’t let players play the opposite gender, even though I had a good hearted half-orc dude in my head that I wanted to play.

Also they wouldn’t let me play dragonborn, because the DM had a personal dislike for them.
