What types of fanfiction should there be more of?

It seems like there's a general consensus that OC and self inserts are in oversupply. Well done pieces along these lines can be entertaining, but good ones are rare.

 

Of course, we're all pretty much drowning in ships. People's apatite for them seems to be insatiable, so I'd say that's probably a good thing. I like ship fics myself, though a couple of months ago I never would have dreamed I'd see the day.

 

Meta fiction seems to be hot, but I wonder if that's just a symptom of burnout with the types of stories that people write most often.

 

I guess the moral of the story is that people want more clever comedies. At least that's my feeling.

..... Something I just thought of in five minutes below.

 

Like the main 6 Ponies coming to a much darker parallel universe of My Little Pony where Princess Celestia is a tyrannical dictator with an Aztec like society that demands the sacrifice of young ponies in order to please her enough to raise the sun and the moon to make her world livable to her lesser pony slaves, who are good like the Ponies where the main six came from, but live in fear and poverty under Princess Celestia's shadow.

 

And Princess Celestia royal guard are shadow like ghost Ponies with red eyes. Princess Celestia enjoys the suffering of the Ponies, and will often torture and kill them for fun.

 

Princess Celestia's fortress is Canterlot in this parallel universe, unlike Canterlot this is a castle floating in mid air in a dark stormy cloudy sky on a island over a lake of lava, and the surrounding ash like landscape is filled by evil monsters of Princess Celestia's making that will attack and kill anything on sight.

 

Plot Line: Some Ponies who stand against Princess Celestia live in the Everfree Forest and hope that the prophecy of Princess Luna may one day come true. The prophecy being that Princess Luna will one day be freed by six Ponies (the main six from another parallel universe) to uplift and free the Ponies from Princess Celestia's rule by Princess Luna defeating Princess Celestia in battle, then Princess Luna will take control of the sun and the moon to open the way to a new age of peace and happiness.

I agree with the pre-readers in the last video Q and Neigh: more episode-style stories! Especially during this off season, when we aren't getting actual episodes. I'm open to a good, long adventure fic if it engages me; and who doesn't love some Rainbow Dash x ANYPONY? But give me that old time religion episode-style story anytime.

Here's another Multiverse one I don't know if this has ever been done before but If the good Pinkie Pie met the Evil Cupcakes Pinkie Pie from a different parallel universe, I'd say she would save Rainbow Dash from her fate and kill the Evil Cupcakes Pinkie Pie.

I think this is more about opinion. Sometimes I wish I didn't, but I like reading sad, heartbreaking tragedy stories, like My Little Dashie. And another somebody might like reading "clopfics" *shivers*, and one may enjoy reading those murderous killing machine massacre psycho stuff. I have come to enjoy romance a little, don't know how, but I did. And comedy is something I am always up for. It really depends on who you are asking.

Definitely need more of slice of life type stories. Main point being that many of the stories that have a long story to them seem to lose focus rather quickly and end up being more of a writers dream-list filled with the most awkward cliches.

Politics of Canterlot- the monarchs probably actually do stuff and we don't see much of that. Who knows, maybe Zecora had to escape slavery in another country where abolishment hadn't arrived.

 

The carpenters of Ponyville that have to deal with the town after the Parasprites or Spike's outburst.

What is it like for ponies who live or work near the north or south poles?

Works of that length are some realm of achivement. Let's look at some comparison: F:Eq is about 600,000 words long, that's almost the same length as a King James Bible. Now granted, the Bible took over 60 people 3,500 years to write and 400 people 70 years to compile (Torah, Pentateuch, Gospels, Letters, Apokalypse -> Vulgate, etc.) and one person wrote F:Eq in less than 2 years, which is at the very least 1000 words written every single day without fail.

To remain both relevant, creative, interesting and timely, you have to be capital-dee Dedicated to write with that kind of capability and consistency.

Other competitors for that length are people like Leo Tolstoy, Charles Dickens, Soren Kierkegaard, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, G.K. Chesterton, and those people's bibliographies ran for decades, often until the day they died. One could make the case that regardless of wishful thinking, Bronyism probably will not have that sort of longevity.
