What would you change about FiM and why?

More map episodes. By the time the Cutie Map appeared, the Mane 6 had already developed quite a bit. As they get more developed, throw them at more complicated problems that test them on how well they can put their friendship lessons to use. The Cutie Map plots of having one or more of the Mane 6 solve problems other than their own was pretty under-utilized, IMO. Instead, we saw the show try to milk these characters for their flaws well past the point of them having essentially dried up. It just ended up making them look artificially thick-headed.

Another route would have been to shift the show's focus from characterization to world building, aesthetics and immersion. The Mane 6 essentially would have become avatars for the audience to place themselves in. Think of it as more Sound of Silence type of episodes where one or more of the main characters travel to new places and discover new stuff about the world.

Twilight's path in the series has been mainly laid out by Princess Celestia and the Tree of Harmony. One time she decided on wanting to do her own thing which was run a friendship school in Season 8. Then Season 9 she has to drop it to take over running Equestria because Celestia and Luna said so.

It would have been better if Twilight had more life decision making choices over the series.

What kind of life decisions would have been the most interesting?

I have a couple of things:

1. More dept into the backstories of characters and lore.
2. Make the timeline believable. (Example: Starswirl has lived for a coupled of hundred of years, which is not realistic.)
3. Give Discord a bit more development.
4. Give Zecora a bit more development.
5. A bit more mystery surounding the show. (Example: Gravity Falls where we learn of the thing that drives the plot at the middle of season 2.)
