Oh yes, chapter four had some pretty bad backtrack as well. But to be fair, I enjoyed that chapter a lot more than chapter five because one: Vivian and because two: I just liked the storyline in it much better.

Agreed, there’s something in chapter 4 that makes the backtracking less tiring than 5. Apart for the aforementioned details you mentioned, I think it’s only once where you have to go back and forth immediately, namely, telling Doopliss his name and go back to the Creeepy Stepple to kick his ass for good. The other times you have to do something upon arrival to backtrack again at least. Chapter 5 isn’t so kind in that regard, you have to advance to the end back and forth immediately each time :scoots:. Doesn’t help that the dungeon was rather bland in comparison, and among the longest ones if I remember

Omg, right??? This game really didn’t hold back. I think that’s why I love it so much. It doesn’t really feel like a typical Mario game which I think is awesome.

Another thing that may have helped, is the overall plot. Despite having a central antagonist faction, the game is very unpredictable. More often than not, each chapter had you facing an independent antagonist that just happen to be in the way of the overall goal. One chapter you where facing said main antagonists, next you were facing a corrupt wrestling manager, then an undead pirate king, then an allegedly terrifying monster who turns out to be a bedsheet ghost with a silly bowtie and a party hat :D

That’s true! And yes! The dungeon was veryy bland, I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks that.

Right??? Which is something that Paper Mario 64 didn’t have. Like yes it was a good game but all of the big bosses were there because of Bowser, you know? It was nice to have a switch up and have each boss (except the ones in chapter two and chapter 7) be something completely independent of the main overarching storyline. Makes you become more invested in the game.

Let’s add to the fact that at the start of each chapter in Paper Mario you would see Mario facing against the silhouette of the boss, so you had an idea what you'll

be facing at the end of the chapter. Not to mention the Peach+Twink sections were about gathering intel about what could be the guarding the Star Spirit. TTYD you had an idea of what the area the Crystal Star looks like, AT BEST. You were going blind otherwise

Oh yeah, for sure. Paper Mario 64 basically just gave you the boss on a silver platter. I don’t mind that, but it made the game a lot easier than it needed to be. :awwthanks:

TTYD definitely improved on that.

Hhhmmm, I could argue that. I felt the original was harder in comparison. Sure, TTYD had tougher, but so did Mario as the battle system has been improved greatly in your favor. Stylish moves, stronger badges, super guard, and that cute pot belly shadow waifu..... :mlp_icwudt:

Fair point! I guess it was just my experiences with the games. I had an easier time with 64, and my first couple times playing TTYD I definitely struggled a bit. :mlp_rarity:

Now that I've played TTYD so much, it's not really an issue either way!

At first, I don't know how to do stylish moves myself so When I got the stylish tutor badge, I understand how to do stylish moves even without the badge. Some of the stylish moves are hard to time.

I can rarely get Goombella's headbonk stylish down. It's so hard to time! :P

My favorite Paper Mario games:

1- Paper Mario: TTYD

2- Paper Mario 64

That’t not to say 64 wasn’t good! It was an amazing game and I am fixing to replay it now. It just doesn’t have that same feeling as The Thousand Year Door did.

Man now I want to play TTYD again.

And that’s the bottom line, ‘cause Stone Cold said so!

TTYD has improved in nearly every aspect compared to it’s predecessor. Save a detail here and there, but the improvements outweighs all it’s flaws

@Steve Piranha I agree. One of the only things I wasn’t too keen on was how wordy it was. It didn’t it bad or anything. But there is a lot there to unpack especially in the early game.

Not as bad as Twilight Princess’s two hour-long tutorial tho :proud:

Or Okami’s 25 minute intro scene.

I only played it once. I have to do so again to see if it’s that aggravating. I’m not usually mindful of tutorials of that length

The game itself is amazing. The story is too. But if you want to get the whole story you have to watch all the cutscenes. Otherwise you lose the feel of the game.

Basically if you’re interested in a good story Okami is the game for you. If you’re more interested in nonstop action it’s not the game for you.

Just made it to the Creepy Steeple since posting here! Now I'm figuring out what to do next... I, uh, am trying to avoid using a walkthrough from now on after looking one up over the most inane of things

I figured it out a while back! Turns out I literally had to push a statue lol. I was expecting to use one of my partners or my hammer honestly

Actually, I finished the game a few days ago too. It is so fantastic and replayable <3

This in my mind is what sets TTYD apart from other Paper Mario games - the mystique. The first time I started chapter 5 and they were talking about a demon behind the door, I was like, "Really? A demon in a Mario game. Not something you see every day."

Finished playing the remake today, and my nitpick there is how they straight up give away the last dungeon halfway through the game.

And it paid off. I thought Shadow Queen was going to be the classic hammy and over the top villain, but she was pretty terrifying. Oh, and the first phase music was the cherry on the top. Too bad it got butchered with the remake remake
