3. Just because ROTJ is ranked lowest of the OT doesn't make it bad. That's disingenuous and you know it

As for the rest. Star Wars in general tends to have tons of great things to like about it. Interesting universe and good stories, interesting and likeable characters. Cool lore, tech and powers. Also, the expanded universe has allowed for great stories beyond the movie's main characters like the Clone Wars cartoon(which went a long way to address the Prequel's shortcomings), and tons of great comics, books, and video games

Also I'll go to bat for Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens and Rogue One and say they're good movies too, especially Rogue One, being the best SW movie outside the OT

I genuinely don't understand why Star Wars is so popular. Out of 9 movies, only 2 of them are good.

I'm curious to hear which ones and your reasoning.

Yea, but life cannot be good all the time, and Star Wars is like real life.

I might count 4 movies as good, and like 1 or 2 being bad.

The rest are just there

Even if we count ROTJ, 3 good movies out of 9 still isn't a great score.

Even then, The Original Trilogy left a huge impact on the world, and its completely unfair to ignore all of the side content that's come out of the Star Wars franchise

Star Wars is still popular? :ooh: That's news to me. After 2 less-than-impressive other trilogies and some hit-or-miss bonus material like the cartoons or the one-shot movies, I thought everyone was tired of Star Wars by now.

Frankly there's no good reason for it to be popular at this point. It was overrated, generic, and frankly poorly written to begin with, and now even the Star Wars fandom has despised the majority of its outings. I have not too high of a regard for Star Wars and especially not its mainstream and honestly cringy fandom.

The same reason anything is popular - people enjoy it and its content. Quality of the films are subjective. Frankly, I enjoy six of the nine films and there are plenty of people who enjoy a good chunk of them. Besides that, there are plenty of other content which are loved by many.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.

If we throw out Disney Star Wars, it's the world that makes it popular as it acts like a fantasy RPG setting. If you're more into Sci-Fi you won't enjoy it as much since there's a lot of stupid shit designed to make the good guys win by default, but if you take it as a space fairy tale focused around questing heroes it's pretty cool.

The real question is why is Star Trek so popular? I gave it a chance awhile back and found it so boring that I couldn't even finish the first episode. Or maybe it was one of the movies. I can't remember.

Expansive universe, detailed history, relatable characters that connected with everybody (Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo and Princess Leia are excellent examples of this), the classical soundtrack that makes up the musical soul of the franchise, references to real world events, and a trilogy that has influenced a lot of people across the world and culturally as well, especially geek/nerd culture. It was also an underdog series too, like Star Trek. When the first film was being made, Lucas had to go through the Hollywood machine to get his film released prior to production starting. Before he went to 20th Century Fox, every major movie studio in the industry said no to the idea. When production did start and progressed, they experienced many problems, technically and internally. On top of that, by the time a trailer was released in 1976 (the film was done by then), everybody thought it was gonna be a failure. The following year was a completely different story, and as the old saying goes, the rest is history.

Star Trek was a show that was made during a time of major changes in the world when it first aired in the 1960s. Tackling of social issues, a diverse cast, the things that make us human and the exploration of space (a Space Shuttle was named after one of the spaceships in the series via a letter writing to the president by fans) is why it's so popular. Many celebrities and even politicians are fans of the series. Their fandom also set up the things that are the standard in nerdom today; conventions, meet and greets, artist alleys, panels, etc.

Because it's an actually quality franchise that's generally at the least decent (with exceptions, Final Frontier and Deep Space Nine). Unlike Star Wars which has been mediocre at best for most of its outings.

Star Wars is classic storytelling at its best. It covers all the basics of the human condition that so many audiences respond to; action, humor, romance and the longing to fulfill one’s destiny, all wrapped up in a totally immersive and original setting. It brought back fun family movies when the world was steeped in lame disaster films and told its story with conviction, putting a fresh twist on some classic concepts. Whether anyone likes the movies or not, it can’t be denied that most modern movies owe a lot to the original and prequel trilogies in terms of theme, technology and basic storytelling (although a lot of that is getting lost now). It has a sweeping story arc that follows the core characters, their origins and their ultimate destinies (depending on what you accept as canon) and has a sense of scope that few movie franchises can ever aspire to. Nowadays everyone loves to be cynical about Star Wars because they have never known a world without it and don’t realize what a difference it made. When it came out it was THE thing in movies; not only a novelty but an overnight sensation that changed moviemaking, and a way of life for countless fans. Now we see lots of movies that follow in its footsteps and borrow liberally from the groundbreaking originals to the point they no longer seem as special (to some) as they originally were. But they are still damn good movies. Over the years a lot has changed; the world became cynical and incapable of being satisfied. When the prequels came out everyone wanted a carbon copy of the originals and so discounted the many treasures the newer installments offered. When the sequel trilogy came along, the fans were so desperate they were ready to accept anything regardless, but soon realized that not just anyone can re-create that universe, and all the special effects in the world couldn’t save it. Having had a tenuous relationship with ever more demanding fans from 1983 to present, it’s no wonder that the Star Wars saga has developed a certain tarnish to its image. But never count it out completely, it just needs the right person, or company, to step up and get it back to its roots.
