Canterlot Castle

I have a suggestion, we post the latest news from Canterlot Castle into that scrolling news banner.

because sometimes news is posted and some of us are oblivious to it's existence, that is unless we check the Castle often.

I'd like to thank the MLP Vector Club for the images used in my avatar.

We've actually been discussing ways to make people more aware of community news and such, since a lot of people are - as you said - a bit oblivious to some of the news that gets posted.

Two of the possibilities that we've tossed around...

• Greater utilization of the rotating banner at the top of the board for site announcements (as has been suggested here)

• Splitting the Questions & Feedback sub-board off into a new board, so as to make it so that the only time that new posts appear in Canterlot Castle is when there is a new announcement and/or a new post in an announcement thread; making it less likely that people will ignore the board entirely due to not being interested in reading question/feedback threads.

Or, if a mod posts a status update.

I agree with what you said Tom. There really isn't much to look at in the banner at the moment. News relative to the site would make more use of the banner.

I would suggest both (Personally, I've always disliked the dependency on tag organization anyway). As for the rotating banner, fairly sure I'm not the only one that gets annoyed how it currently contains information not relevant to this website. It's an AD that can't be dismissed.

Also, this forum software has an "Announcement" function, which is a section that appears above the forums (but below the site banner) ... and it can be set to which web pages it shows up on.

Status updates are fairly spammy, and since there are only 5 on the front page. Chances are it may get overlooked more easily. Only people who have the mods as friends and actually bothers with all the status updates may see, which isn't really a solution. We'd like new members and old alike to see all the topics.

Isn't it possible to subscribe to Canterlot Castle, and get notification updates for whenever it gets updated?

My journey in the fandom started on April 5, 2012. I joined here on April 24, 2012. Where that journey is headed now, who knows...

That's a very good point. :D

We're very careful with our ability to send out mass emails and generally reserve them for the most important of announcements. People have a bad habit of treating any kind of mass email as "spam" and either unsubscribing themselves or actually reporting it as spam to their email provider in an attempt to get it out of their inbox (which can have the side effect of reducing my server's mail delivery rate as well).

In a perfect world, everyone would do this.

I agree that we haven't been using the news ticker to its fullest potential. I'll add a spot for the new monthly traffic report as a test. Splitting off the feedback section seems like a good idea to isolate the announcements, but it will make the index page longer and it's already a fair deal of scrolling to get to the bottom of it.

I would like to add, however, that the whole point of it is to be a community advertising spot - whether we're advertising a Canterlot Castle topic, our TF2 server, a piece of pony merch on Amazon, or a call for subscriptions, it all falls under the umbrella of trying to get people to take a look at something, which is all an ad is meant to do at the end of the day. Members advertise their own events and projects in it from time to time as well.

What differentiates it from the automated AdSense ads you can opt into is that the news ticker ads are manually curated to be at least somewhat relevant to the community (exactly how relevant they are is a matter of opinion - I know TF2, for example, isn't relevant to everyone, but it is a server that exists for this website and we want people to know about it).

In my experience, very few people pay any attention to IP.Board's announcement feature. We used to have our Minecraft server information in an announcement, and almost no one was aware of it judging by some of the questions we constantly received. Things improved markedly when we moved the information to a pinned topic. Announcements are only visible on forum indexes, too - they're not shown within topics or on the homepage.

Send letters to our mailboxes so we can read em forum news while we're infront of the tv looking in the newspapers with coffee in our hands. Nvm no coffee, I don't like it.

Hah anyways, I like the idea to put the news in the rotating banner thing we have now.

I don't really need it though since I visit canterlot castle a few times a day.
