I do not care if this topic is finished. I have put much thought into this question and I want to put in my two bits. If you have a problem with that, file it under personal problems.

 

Applejack: She is obviously one of the mane growers and harvesters of of the sweet apple acres orchard. Her job comes simply by the fact that she is born into the Apple family.

 

Rarity: She is the chief designer and manufacturer at the Carousel Boutique. She appears to have large dry spells where she sells very little and makes most of her money from very large and exclusive jobs from very important clients. It is obvious she doesn't sell a whole lot to local ponyville residents.

 

Pinkie Pie: Employee at Sugarcube Corner. It appears that part of her salary comes out of her paycheck to pay for her housing since she appears to live in an apartment on the top floor of the shop.

 

Twilight Sparkle: Student/Chief Librarian of Ponyville. I would assume that all of her money comes from the government of Equestria since she works at a public office and is a prized pupil of the monarch herself.

 

Rainbow Dash: Leader or Employee of the Ponyville weather team. Her money must also come from public sector money since she is providing a public service. Since it is a constant service I can't imagine that she would work on contract so the weather team must be some kind of public office.

 

Fluttershy: This one is tough. Fluttershy appears to be self sufficient as she lives on the edge of the forest and raises chickens. It is probable that she sells eggs to sugarcube corner since she probably doesn't have too much use for the large number of eggs she must receive from the 15 some odd chickens she owns. It also appears that she cares for other people's pets. The wild animals she befriends cannot pay her in bits so her care for them more than likely cannot get her any gain unless she receives government subsidies for her work (I doubt it).

 

So. That's what I think.

About Fluttershy, we saw a proper vet in 'Secret of my Excess', and they had a proper clinic and equipment, nothing like anything we've seen Fluttershy with, so Fluttershy probably isn't a vet. Considering how she took care of Philomena, she more likely runs a pet-sitting service. She may also be paid by the government as animals in Equestria don't seem to be as self-sufficient as on Earth (One of the things that scares them about the Everfree Forest is that 'the animals take care of themselves').

The thought came to me this morning, and I put some thought into it. What does Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash do for a living?

 

We know Rarity is a well off designer

We know Twilight is Celestia’s top student

We know AJ works on her family's orchard

And we know that Pinkie Pie works for the Cakes

 

I know that Rainbow Dash is a top flier in Equestria, and during Hurricane Fluttershy Rainbow was coaching all the other pegasi in Ponyville, she was also the leader of the pegasi during the winter wrap up. But I don’t know if she had one defined job description.

 

As for Fluttershy I can’t remember off the top of my head her having any sort of paying job.

 

Any thoughts or opinions on the subject?

ummm yes, rainbow dash is a weather pony, they giver her a schedule on what the weather should be like, many ponies comment on it when she slacks or pranks...

as for fluttershy, i think she sells pets.

That's my guess, is that since she lives in Library and loves books till the apocalypse, she's probably a librarian sort of thing. I mean we've seen her organizing the entire library and stuff since it's both her home and she loves the books, so I'm assuming she's somehow compensated for, for that. If not by Celestia, than the Mayor.

Fluttershy owns an animal nursery, (at least that's what I think), and Rainbow Dash is the main weather pony in Ponyville. That's basically what they do.

Ok -- how they get their bits..

 

Applejack runs Apple Acres, but there is a lot of upkeep and materials etc. A lot of money comes in but a lot of money goes out.

 

Rarity has even more upkeep. She is constantly giving dresses away to nobles and friends and is always one step away from bankruptcy. Her lifestyle is one big house of cards.

 

Twilight gets a reasonable stipend from Celestia to do her research on friendship -- but she spends so much on quills, ink, paper, and mad scientist supplies that it takes three accountant ponies just keeping her records straight in Canterlot.

 

Fluttershy works on donations for the cute little animals and a small stipend from the Mayor's office as well as not having to pay any taxes on her cottage.

 

Pinkie Pie gets a salary at the Cakes but with as much as she eats/uses etc, she is as much a liability on the business as an asset. Still they keep her around because of all of the catering/parties she drums up.

 

Rainbow Dash is actually the richest pony -- She runs the weather team and has practically no expenses. Her private cloud dwelling takes advantage of a loophole in the tax code not officially being part of either Cloudsdale or Ponyville. She even manages some fresh apples during the winter from Los Pegasus while the other ponies eat stored hay and preserves.

You would help she would get some kind of funding from Celestia, as Celestia has posted her there to do research. I wonder if she would be able to write off certain expenses as being for the purposes of research... parties, quills, ink, paper, cake, apples, vetrinary expenses etc

Sorry but I'm going to have to nitpick here. Fluttershy was not in charge of the animal team in Winter Wrap Up she was simply a member of the team.

I always considered Fluttershy to be the towns Veterinarian she as she not only takes care of wild animals but also some which i consider domesticated.

 

I think the other mares job's are pretty cut and clear to me.
