But why does that matter if someone cannot find another by searching?

It makes it harder to navigate to their account page, hardship I've experienced myself.

Maybe those that change their names don't want to be figured out who they really are...

>_>

Besides, what's wrong with a little confusion? :D

so many people change their names a lot that it gets harder and harder to remember who is who, and checking profile name histories frequently becomes annoying. Those whose names tend to retain similarities when they change, are easy to identify. But when somepony changes their name in entirety, as well as gives themselves a new avatar and signature, it becomes harder to tell who they are.

If you're unsure of who someone is, searching one of their previous names in the search bar brings up their current profile.

Huh, how do you get 3 name changes a month? I only have one, do you need to donate or something?

Eenope, go to change name in your profile and it should say "You have used X out of 3 name changes since (date)" or something of the like.

It may be possible to link to the Display Name History in topic view. Although members need to remember that completely changing their entire profile around is confusing. And that it is in some way courtesy to kind of stick with a name for a long time.

The name change feature is provided as courtesy, so members don't have to pick a name carefully and stick with it. However if rules need to be implemented because of systematic abuse, we will have to look into it.

Changing your name to something similar like from Tich to Tichonea, or Tich to Doctor Tich, or Tich to Tichondrius, or Tich to Tichazoid, is all fine. And is considered fun.

But that isn't a problem with the number of name changes, it's a problem with changing your name.

Report this to a mod then, it is wrong. (Tich is watching this thread, he could help)

I'm overall indifferent since I don't see myself changing my name anytime soon even if it was a joke like "Salty Spitoon" but I don't think having multiple name changes isn't any harm as long as people use them appropriately as in you can tell who they are. As long as people don't use their name changes for the sake of intentional confusion I don't think there's any harm the way things are now.

But that isn't a problem with the number of name changes, it's a problem with changing your name.

The ability to change your name three 3 a month (3 times over 15 days for donating) is a factor, it doesn't help if it can be changed that often.

But honestly, I don't see how those numbers count as restrictive to anyone, most forums allow no name changes at all. Ora lot less of them. And their reasons are the same as the ones being told here. The number of name changes is part of the confusion. The more you have, the more you can change.

While I personally see no reason to constantly hop onto completely new names. I like to be known by my name, and will live by that name. And people will call me Tich even if I use a similar looking one, which is enjoyable for all members. If I never stuck with a name, you'd have no reference to what to call me, and members who join at certain points of knowing me will use different handles, and if I use enough, it becomes a giant clusterfuck for all.

The thing I like to talk about is common courtesy. Changing names is a privilege, something that shouldn't be abused.

I like the freedom of changing names, its really nice, plus it sucks, if you named yourself after something (character, brand, video game, quote, phrase, etc) and you misspelled it, oh no! You only have one name change a month! Oh the humanity! No, three name changes per months stays, FOREVER!!!!

Voted indifferent.

I only changed my name, avatar, and signature once a month. So an alteration to the name change doesn't affect me much.

But then again, watching other users changing their names to a silly ones is very entertaining. At least for me

Nopenopenopenope.

I go against this thread 100%.

There are strict rules in place so people can enjoy the site.

I refuse to believe that someone is going to strip away our rights to have fun.

It is our name, we can change it as much as we please.

It isn't yours, so why complain?

Most shocking post eva. :P

I feel your idea is a tad bit overboard, Roop. But I do think that there should be an easier way to see name changes than go on the profile page. Maybe include it in that hover over thingy?

And also, *cough*DEVIN DASH MCCOURTNEY*cough*

Reducing name changes takes away from those fun, spontaneous moments of the site when everyone changes to whatever the fad is.

By everyone, you mean the 10-15 people that do it while the rest of us say

I don't care that much, but there's a reason I've only ever changed my name once.

Speak for yourself, I don't participate but sometimes it's fun to be an observer on the sidelines ;) Unless the fad is something uber mega dumb, then I'm groaning with you

This may have been mentioned, but as a solution, would it not be possible to make it show a user's previous names if one were to hover over another's avatar? That seems like it would save many people much trouble. I'm looking at YOU Zombie King.

However, most people have a certain style to their posts, an attitude if I may. So if someone were to change their avi, sig, and name, then we might have a problem if they aren't an established member.

*facepalm*

The point I'm trying to make is that if one changes one's name dramatically (like you or me) then they won't appear if searched for. As the search doesn't include old names. But it does include the about page. So by listing previous names on one's about page it'll be easier for people to find you after changing your name.

I tried it with no "e" and it brought up my profile...

Indeed it does, but not because it's your old name.

My favorite main pony would have to be Twilight Sparkle, due to my relatable nature to her "take charge, getter done" attitude. My favorite background ponies would have to be Vinyl Scratch then Colgate (she always caught my attention in the episodes for some reason, same with Seafoam).

This is from your about me page, and you've written Colagte there, that's why you appear when "Colgate" is searched.

Searching old names and finding them is simply because you placed them in your About Me page. Similarly, searching Kyronea will link you to my and Kyronea's profile because it is mentioned in both our About Me Sections, Tich has this same case.

Simply having your old names in the About Me section will make this work, old names do not show up in searches.

Searching Derpy Queen of Storms does not link me to my profile, neither does searching Twilight Sparkle link you to Feld0.

I hope this debate is resolved about searching old names.

I actually find it quite funny when I can't figure out who somepony is  . And I don't think this is a problem.

So I have to disagree with this, actually.
