How do ponies fight?

The guards for Celestia are never seen armed and we've never seen a weapon in the show.

 

Fan based art show ponies using weapons made for human hands in their mouth. The telekinesis of Unicorns allows for use of any weapon, but I'm really thinking of Pegasi and Earth Ponies right now.

 

What weapons do they use? They cannot use the zero range telekinesis that allows them to pick up items with their hooves, all four legs are needed for mobility.

 

In large formations a classic cavalry charge and trample attack is pretty standard. Its the hand to hand combat I'm thinking of.

Mouth held weapons are just not practical. The teeth are just not that strong. The head and neck of a pony have some strong muscles. I think a helmet mounted weapon is the key to warfare here. One or two long blades attached to either side of the muzzle is the trick.

 

Unicorns are far more devastating as archers. They don't need bows or even arrows...just the arrowheads. A unicorn levitates say 10-20 arrowheads, slamming them into opponents and ripping them out again. One unicorn can make for an effective area affecting attack. A unicorn with telekinetic training like Twilight can pick up hundreds of arrowheads and sweep death over entire battlefields.

 

In the same vein unicorns can act as artillery, tossing extremely accurate 50-100 pound iron balls into the enemy and using the same ball over and over again.

 

Unicorns are easy, but I think weapons will need to be invented for the Pegasus and earth pony.

Might I add that in some fics, they consider the possibility of pegasi having magnetic powers, enabling them to lift metals. They explain this by saying all races have some sort of magic, and the pegasi ability to control the weather (in this case, namely lightning/electricity) let's them harness an amount of electricity with which they use to lift metals with their hooves. So I imagine if this is the case, than they could fly while holding their weapons.

ponies (and mammals in general) have strong powerful jaws and sharp useful teeth than any human. also the muscles on their neck gives then more power than ever, and their hooves gives them traction. So I think it's pretty accurate and realistic for a pony to hold weapons with their snouts.

I believe Applebloom is good at karate (I'm not exactly sure what she says), but this seems like an effective fighting technique. Also, tanks have been mentioned in the show (Rarity's 'Art of the Dress' song and when Rainbow names her tortoise) so it is safe to say that Equestria has some form of artillery.

My personal theory for non-Unicorns:

 

Pegasi certainly use lances of some variety, but how do they control them? I'd say that the lance is attached to their armor, perhaps braced against the bearer. This way Pegasi would still have use of all 4 hooves/2 wings. The lance is critical for Pegasi, the cavalry of ponies. As they can attack enemies from above and quickly fly off, they have little need of a short-range melee weapon (the lance is only effective during the charge).

 

Earth Ponies are more confusing. They clearly are infantry, but their weaponry is more confusing. Without magic ponies don't have the dexterity to use gunpowder weapons. I'd say that Earth ponies use a combination of Pegasi style lances as well as swords (could be held in the mouth). If I remember correctly the Apple family prepared to defend their farm from parasprites by holding pitchforks. It may be possible to hold a lance or spear as a pony (as opposed to fastening it to armor/bracing it), but I don't know how.

 

And Unicorns are very confusing because it seems like they could just do so much. However, with the exception of Rarity everypony depicted doing magic in the show has been VERY good at it (ex Celestia, Chrysie, Twilight, Cadence, S. Armor, Trixie). Most unicorns don't hold that that level of skill. Therfore it is unlikely that the average unicorn could accelerate objects to anywhere near lethal speeds. Unicorns can, however, do things that require fine motor skills (ex loading/firing gunpowder weapons). In addition they can just fire off magical bolts (as seen in the season finale) instead of bullets. Unicorns clearly act as the troops controlling almost all ranged weapons.

 

All in all, I'd say that Equestria's military, from what we've seen, is in the age of "pike and shot" that existed on Earth around the time of the Reformation. Sorry for typos, I type most of my posts on my iPhone.

I don't believe that because their technology is way ahead of this age. They also have means of transport like for example trains.

I think the weapons and armor of the guards have more a representative purpose.

Also I don't think there would be something like a strategic war in Equestria. All the fighting we have seen so far had a defensive purpose.

I think the unicorns have the major role in the military.

I also wonder why nopony had the idea that the pegasi might simply drop things on their enemies like bombers. It seems to be logic for me that they wont engage their targets directly but use their range

I dont think they really use weapons, you dont see the mane 6 comming at Discord with clubs and spears niw do you? (I know he can only be defeated with the elements of harmony but thats besides the point.)

Pegasi can gather clouds over their enemies and instigate them into making lightning bolts. Lightning is very dangerous to all, even more so if they are clad in metal. Plus think of the flash flooding. Control the weather, control the battle. Tornadoes a plus...
