Question for closet Bronies

Mare in the Moon

Recommended Posts

I've been seeing a lot of "Closet bronies" around here, and I am starting to wonder everyone's individual reasons to why they are not open about it. What circumstances are you going through that prevents you from being open about it?

Note: I am not a closet brony, I am just curious about why others are.

It's pretty obvious.

We're in a fandom about ponies.

I don't know where you live, but in Texas, you are condemned for it.

But I'm still an open brony, so I honestly don't care.

I'm not a closer brony but I think those who are could be scared of what others would think about them /say to them /do to them if people found out they were bronies.

Brushing your hair is for people who care and someone who cares is not I, I'll jump off a bridge and then fill up your fridge,
and best pony is Fluttershy.

Her face is still blushing and she is still eating the pasta.

I'm not a closet Brony, I'm really open about it, and I know the tormenting most Bronies go through by society today, I bet you that 30-40% of Bronies are closet Bronies.

The tormenting that keeps Bronies from opening up is from the Homophobes that attack them for being gay, same with parents, family, and friends. But also by peers because we like MLP.

Ah, Judgement. The answer I was expecting to see first.

I have experienced the judgement before, but honestly it only made me laugh. Heck I make jokes too, towards myself. I was judged a lot, until I started to make the jokes at myself too. It just made it not fun for them anymore.

I have a reputation as someone people dont wanna push too far though, plus people around Colorado are really understanding. They make jokes, but its never to be mean, just funny.

I expected to be ridiculed a lot for it, but I just ended up telling everyone within the first week anyway. I was afraid of judgement, but I wanted more people to know about it.

Hmm, I am not sure if I am a closet brony or not.

I haven't told anybody in real life (like family and friends) that I watch MLP, but I own a few figurines and have them sitting out in the open. People have probably figured out that I like the show, and that is fine. I just do not feel the need to exclaim about my bronyhood to those who do not show any interest.

And frankly, the people I know in real life are a little judgmental. I'd be a fool in their eyes for enjoying a children's show. There is no way they would show anything but ignorance towards ponies. If I were to sit them down and explain the magic of MLP, I can see them giggling and snorting at my words. For the people who do choose to listen to me, they would pretend to show interest and still hold on to their own ideas. It's just not a discussion I want to have with people who hold such an attitude.

When people walk by my door and see the figurines on my windowsill, they can judge silently. but they'd still have no idea what it is all about. It gives me comfort to know that they don't understand. Opening up a discussion about bronyhood would allow them to judge me on better grounding.

Oh, and I am just a private person in the first place. That might have something to do with it too ;)

Better question: Why do you care if people judge you? If they are willing to judge someone totally based on one of their harmless hobbies, shame on them.

Well let me share you my story.

I grew up and still live in rather rural areas of Utah. Around where I grew up, people are very homophobic and would be so disgraceful to anything relating to homosexuals. The term "gay" would equal "stupid". I'm sure that maybe a few of you have seen it around where someone will say, "Oh you're so gay" as an insult. It's really intolerable to hear this stuff all the time, because I for one have nothing at all against gay people. But it's these sheep that just flock around the idea that gay = subhuman that cause the problems.

Anyway, I am a closet brony around where I live, because people would just feed me so much shit if I expressed it openly. I shared the fact that I liked ponies to some of my roommates last semester and for the most part they did not care, but one roommate would always call me "faggot" and "homo" and what not. Coming from some rather shitty experiences of Middle School and High School, I do not really want to be harassed in such a way in my college years.

So yeah. I am a closet brony simply for the fact that I don't want to be harassed. Maybe when I move out of here into a more urban area that does not share such a close-minded parasitic way of thinking then maybe I could be more open with it.

Harassment and judgement keep me a closet brony. I mean, I have not been judged or harassed, but I'm scared I would be.

Maybe in community college this upcoming school year I'll "reveal" myself. Who knows? I could find some other bronies to talk to there!

hhmm i wonder what that makes me because i refused to call my self a brony but i was open about liking the show.

i think the issue with closet bronies is alway the fear of what would happen if they started being open about it. i know the first time i went out in the open with a mlp shirt on I had a cup fill with beer thrown at me which became that guys problem because i hang out with alot of members of S.O.P.H.I.E.

But i think he means that many Bronies get harassed because of peoples assumption that if they like MLP, they must be gay.

Cant you see the connection between watching a television show and being sexually attracted to Men? :P

I'm somewhat outgoing with it all, and somewhat a closet brony myself. I tend to try and imagine how others would react if I told them, like which ones would shun it, and which would accept it, and that's how I base who exactly I tell. It's gone pretty well like that, and I'd say about 40% of my friends know, and they seem not to care.

I think it's because I'm such an awesome person.

That or because I knocked a guys teeth out for calling me a faggot in my 9th year....

Many people think we are gay, yes, there are a few gay Bronies but haters and most people in general perpetuate stereotypes.

Ehh, my reason is a bit different than a lot of people I think.

I'm pretty open about it I guess, I'll go buy shirts at Hot Topic sometimes, my family and friends have seen me watching it, so I'm guessing most people know. I just don't randomly tell someone I'm a brony cause I just don't think it matters. It's a television show. Whether I watch it or not is irrelevant to me.

Sure, if someone asks me straight up "Hey, are you a brony?" Sure, I'll tell them. But besides that, I don't think it matters. I watch the show, I spend time in the fandom, buy the merchandise, all that. But really, it's just a show. It's really screwed up that people have to be afraid of being judged just because they watch a show. Watching a show doesn't make you gay nor does it make you sexually attracted to animals. (If you are, then whatever do what you want, it doesn't matter to me)

But I guess we just live in that kind of society. I used to be afraid of being judged, but I got over it. Mainly cause I felt sorry for the people poking fun at us cause in some cases they feel so bad about themselves that they have to call someone gay and pretend it's an insult. (Still don't see how gay is and insult... Maybe to some people it is but not me) I also laughed it off cause the only people insulting me seemed to have no idea what they're talking about. One dude called me autistic for watching the show. How is autism related to watching a show?

I should be a closet brony due to the super harsh judgments i receive over it, but i honestly don't really mind it...the first things i'll tell people when i meet them... "Hi my name is **** and i am a brony"...i find it's actually funny some of the responses i get to that...but i know i'll always have my bronys behind me all the way!

I wouldn't say I'm completely a closet Brony. I tell those who ask. There are some I won't tell because they'll harass me about it. I'm sure I'll be far more open when I'm an adult and I can smuggle knives more places.

I'm judged a lot by my peers at school and they already act condescending towards me. If I told anyone I liked My Little Pony they'd think I was retarded or something. It's not worth the humiliation and conflict. -_-

Personally I would be more open if I didn't risk being disowned at the mentioning. My father would bust a bucking lugnut!

Being not only in the Military, but being part of a small group of full timers in a small office environment really puts a damper on being open about my Bronyness. You think high school kids are bad? Try adult men who watch foxnews.

I fear of being judged, because this franchise is known for the brand that focuses on little girls and people might take the current generation the wrong way. I'm gay but this show would damage my reputation if my friends and family find out, I don't want to lose that. I'll have to keep this a secret to myself, so nobody finds out about it.
