gaming Any Good MMORPG Games

Well, I quite enjoy Lord of the Rings Online (though a lot of people seem not to. Also it takes forever to level). I don't play it nearly as much as I used to, but still enjoy it from time to time. It's 100% free if you put enough time into it as well (it uses microtransactions, but you can earn the store currency through normal gameplay, thus making it possible to unlock almost everything without spending a dime. That would take a TON of grinding though across multiple characters). Vindictus is also a lot of fun. Those are the only MMORPGs/MMOs I can think of that lets you go from 0 to level cap without paying anything, but there are probably others.

If you are going to play MMORPGs atleast do it right. RuneScape is a browser game, it is so limited at graphics, and trust me graphic matter a lot when spending a lot of time in a RPG.

Id go with Secret World (check out http://gamingtops.com/secret-world/ for review). imo its the best MMORPG game out there atm.

Have fun!

Try 'Realm of the Mad God'.

It's a Bullet Hell MMORPG with no real story, just killing. And it's 8-Bit.

It's pretty freakin awesome.

It ain't bullet hell, and it ain't an RPG. It's an action game with a few RPG elements.

Also, it doesn't emphasize dodging nearly enough to be bullet hell.

Still, it's quite fun :)

I believe you're confusing 'Bullet Hell' with 'Danmaku', but I could be wrong.

And technically RPG just stands for 'Role Playing Game', so in the most basic sense, it is an RPG.

Danmaku and Bullet Hell are the same thing. Danmaku, if I remember correctly, literally means "curtain of bullets" or "curtain of fire".

And if you want to argue semantics, then Mario, CoD, Splinter Cell, even the board game Monopoly, are all RPGs, since you play a role.

RPGs, in a technical sense, have many elements.

Some of the biggest elements that are required for a game to be a true RPG are:

-characters' strengths and weaknesses are represented by stats, which can increase through some process, representing the character getting stronger.

-the effectiveness of actions in the game is mostly reliant on these stats, not the skill of the player. This is why so many games normally thought of as RPGs are actually action games with RPG elements, and not true RPGs.

-the majority of actions in the game are carried out, or at least set up, through a menu based system.

Since the majority of what goes on in RotMG is based on moving, aiming, shooting, etc, it's not really an RPG. It does have RPG elements, however.

And like I said, it's still a great little game. Not being an RPG or Bullet Hell doesn't make it any less good, it just makes people like me irritated by the devs who market it as such. I first started playing it because I saw "Bullet Hell" and was instantly interested. I was disappointed by the fact that it wasn't, but it's still quite fun :)

You can play Star Wars the old republic up to level 15 or 20 I think for free.

Its pretty fun, very similar to WoW. But already theres talks about going free to play.

Another big one is DC Universe.

Also i'd take a look at MMO Grinder on bliptv

He goes through a lot of free to play games, and will tell you how the community is, how much the pay store will affect gameplay, and a lot of other things about numerous different free to play games.

Two things. 1. Thanks for clarifying the whole 'Bullet Hell/Danmaku' thing.

and

2. Uh, RotMG does rely heavily on stats, and the effectiveness of actions is mostly reliant on stats.

You ever tried fighting a Cube God at level 10 with basic equipment?

It's an action RPG, but still an RPG.

Also, your third point only really applies to JRPGs

So, in conclusion, it's almost (but not quite) bullet hell, and it is an RPG, albeit an action RPG.

Agree to disagree?

To answer your question, no. There are no *good* mmos. Nobody has done anything unique in terms of gameplay in the mmo industry for years. That being said, I play Dragon Nest with a friend. The biggest down side to this game is the fact that it's run by nexon. There aren't any MMO's that are out or that are coming out, that I know of, that are actually doing something unique and interesting.

Good luck with your quest lol

wow and rift maplestory are good

I would recommend against maplestory because it's run by nexon and hacking is a HUGE problem in that game. The community is very bad and the combat gets very repetitive. One example is a month long period when hackers would crash channels to duplicate items. This went on for, as I said, a month before nexon could patch the hacks away. It took the hackers less then 2 weeks to figure out how to crash channels again. Edited by Bohtty

(derp, accidentally deleted some formatting tags on this first part :P)

Not really. There is some reliance on stats, but when it comes down to it, the ability to hit and not get hit is more important, which are both 100% dependent on player skill.

Now, I've never fought a cube god, but I'm guessing that if one was able to dodge everything, and had enough time, one could chip away at it's health long enough to actually kill it.

Also, your third point only really applies to JRPGs

It doesn't, actually. True, it's more prevalent in turn based RPGs, which are usually JRPGs, but it still applies to other RPGs. The original Fallout games? Classic WRPGs, skills, speech, picking what type of attack, and sometimes what to target, all done through menus. Morrowind, another classic? Skills, equipment, alchemy, enchanting, armory stuff, spellmaking, speech, everything is either set up or actually done through menus.

So, in conclusion, it's almost (but not quite) bullet hell, and it is an RPG, albeit an action RPG.

Yes, almost a bullet hell (there aren't any strict definitions of bullet hell, it just doesn't have enough shots, and it's too easy to dodge to be one IMO), but no, it is not an action RPG (which is an RPG with action elements. Something like Star Ocean). It is an action game with RPG elements, which there is absolutely nothing wrong with.

Agree to disagree?

Sure :)

Sorry, the one thing I'm really anal about is game genres XD

There's TERA as well, a eastern fantasy MMO that was released two months ago is unique with combat because it rids of click and activate. All abilities need to be aimed with the mouse and all attacks can be either dodged or blocked. That's really the only unique aspect it though and everything else is pretty much the same as every other MMO but it makes for a nice change. Graphically it also looks really good as shown by this video:

There's a free trial you can get by going to there website if your interested or you could look up some gameplay videos beforehand to see what combat is like. The best way is for you to get a feel for it yourself though.

Just keep trying out different games until you find one you like, I've played many different MMO's and I'm still yet to fully level up a character on any of them.

Honestly I don't think it really matters if it is a true rpg or an action rpg or if it is or isnt a bullet hell shooter, all I know is that Realm of the Mad God is freaking amazing, so addicting so much fun and so worth playing!!! I haven't been on in awhile, but I'll start playing again if we can get a group together!!!

Woohoo! Another excuse to push the best [Free!] game ever, NEStalgia!

I've totally been playing consistently for two years, way better than WoW imo.

I would totally help out any newbs, too, team up for group quests, speed runs and such. I play on "Zenithia," the PvP server. I also belong to the biggest guild on the server - the "Balzackians."
