same as with any music: you've gotta have a balance of everything in there. If you can't balance out the components of a song then all you get is a piece of noises

Is it good to want to try and tackle multiple types of music? I want to learn to create EDM, and I also play guitar.

I've never seen any problems with it. Just make sure that you're able to change the way you approach music since each genre is different. I know from experience that if you try to play Journey with a Mozart mind-set, it's going to sound like hell. That being said, it's always a good idea to broaden your horizons!
