movies/tv Scariest horror film you have ever seen

Okay, I have one of two to blame for making me think the title of this thread read, "Sexiest film you've ever seen". Either my bad eyesight, and the fact that I'm not wearing my glasses, or my perverted, deviant mind. Probably the latter, but likely a mixture of both.

ANYway, scary movies don't scare me anymore. They'll startle me, but nothing really scares me in my older years.

In my youth, Friday the 13th used to freak me out, but not anymore.

I think your profile pic is the scariest thing I've ever seenderpy_emoticon1.png . But in actuality the scariest thing I've ever seen was a commercial for ice cream of all things. It's really hard to describe why it's scary but if you want to see it, look up  "Ice cream, this is a special time."

  • 1 year later...

Time for a delicious bump.

I'm going to spoiler this post because it contains mature content. It doesn't break any rules (won't be describing anything explicitly) but I'm spoilering this out of respect for people who may not want to read about disturbing content.

None of the movies on this list are recommended for anyone under 18 or anyone with medical problems. I know that at least one of these movies has caused serious injury and/or death in people with serious medical conditions, such as heart problems.

For me, disturbing and scary are two very different things. A movie can be scary without being disturbing, and vice versa.

I define scary as something that makes me feel uncomfortable, unsafe, and gives me trouble sleeping for a short period of time. I define disturbing as something that makes me feel genuinely at risk, depressed, morally/spiritually offended, unhappy, in despair, slammed emotionally, and disturbs my sleep for a long period of time.

However, both of these terms apply to most of the extreme horror movies I've seen, so I'll just make a list of the most disturbing horror movies I've seen. This list will exclude 4 movies that I can't talk about on this forum because they're worse than R-rated. This is in order with one being the most disturbing.

Also keep in mind that this strictly includes horror movies. I have seen several war movies, drama movies, thrillers and so on that are just as disturbing as many of the things on this list.

Lastly, none of this is intended to glorify or celebrate evil. I hate evil. I watch things like this out of a mixture of morbid curiosity and a will to face my fears and toughen myself up in a safe way.

  • The Exorcist (Rated R for strong language and disturbing images) - By far the most emotionally disturbing movie I've seen. I didn't watch it until I was 18, and I'm glad, because this would have fucked me up even more than it did now if I had seen it any earlier. It was also one of the best and most effectively horrifying movies I have ever seen.

  • The Devil Inside (Rated R for disturbing violent content and grisly images, and for language including some sexual references) - I saw this when I was 15, and I still haven't really gotten over it. It was truly one of the most disturbing and upsetting movies I've ever seen. I still get scared just thinking about it, even after all these years. It was very effective at being realistic and bone-jarringly disturbing.

  • The Purge (Rated R for strong disturbing violence and some language) - The most disturbing thing about this movie was that there were no devils in it. All of the horrific evil was done by flesh and blood human beings who were simply evil and depraved.

  • Paranormal Activity 1 (Rated R for language)
Paranormal Activity 2 (Rated R for some language and brief violent material)
Paranormal Activity 3 (Rated R for some violence, language, brief sexuality and drug use)
Paranormal Activity 4 (Rated R for language and some violence/terror)

These movies really got to me because of how realistic they were and how haunting they are without using tons of gore or flashy special effects. This really fucked with me psychologically. Hell, even a comedy movie I saw parodying these (among other) movies creeped me out.

  • Lovely Molly (Rated R for strong disturbing violence and grisly images, some graphic sexual content and nudity, drug use and language) - This movie was fucked up. Really fucked up. I don't even really want to talk about it, it was just really good at being disturbing.

  • The Taking Of Deborah Logan (Rated R for disturbing violent content, language and brief nudity) - This movie was actually a pretty good movie. Very sad and very disturbing. It built up slow but in a way that was really difficult to sit through because of how unsettling it was.

  • The Blair Witch Project (Rated R for language) - This movie was really interesting. What's going on is very vague but clearly evil. It leaves things up to your imagination and for me that's scarier than most horror movies that rely on gore.

  • The Conjuring (Rated R for sequences of disturbing violence and terror) - This movie contained very little R-rated content in the traditional sense of the term, even in regard to violence. From what I've heard this is one of the few movies that pretty much only got rated R because of how frightening and disturbing it is, and I can see why. This is also one of the best movies I've ever seen, but it was really disturbing and upsetting. Honestly, I haven't been able to go into my basement for any long period of time after seeing this.

  • The Sacrament (Rated R for disturbing violent content including bloody images, language and brief drug use) - I really liked this movie because it put a fictional spin on the VICE news show, which is very real. I've watched real VICE stuff. It's 18+ so use discretion, but it's very interesting and effective at relating what's going on in the world. This movie depicted a sort of worst-case scenario, and it was extremely violent and upsetting. Probably one of the most violent movies I've seen in terms of the context of the violence.

  • Annabelle (Rated R for intense sequences of disturbing violence and terror) - Pretty sure this is supposed to be some kind of prequel (or sequel? idk lol) to The Conjuring. It was a very intense movie, but far, far less disturbing than the Conjuring. This movie (in my opinion) actually had a lot more heart though, and it was one of the very few horror movies I've seen that was actually uplifting in certain parts. It had a lot of really positive messages in it and that was really cool and refreshing to see in a movie of this nature.
