I was wondering whether or not a Dota topic existed, I was half tempted to make a new one myself.

I started playing Dota couple of months ago, loved the hell out of it. It's currently my most consistently played game.

A Dota 2 discussion thread eh? Yus, I'll be active in this one for sure

Anyways, I've been meaning to try the initiator role for a while, but I just can't seem to do it :/. Can anyone recommend an easy initiator to play? I tried Sand Kind, but I was crap :c

Brewmaster is an easy and fun initiator. All you need to farm is Arcane boots and a blink dagger to be effective with him. Another good initiator is tidehunter but farming with him is more difficult.

I should have mentioned Brewmaster, I do play him from time to time. It usually ends up pretty well, but I usually go for a more semi-carry role rather than a pure initiator.

Tidehunter is a bitch to play :/

If you want to try and play semi carry then Sven used to be played as an initiator semi carry but has transitioned into a late game carry. He's always fun to play if you know how to CS. I suggest trying Centaur Warrunner he's fun and wins 55%of games he's in.

Every single time I try to play Sven, I end up being the semi-support for some reason, mainly because my teammates keep bitching about it :/

Centaur is fun as hell, his initiation is a bit flimsy though. He heavily relies on his teammates when it comes to initiating

That's the plight of most initiators though if they're team isn't there to fight when things get initiated then you're probably going to die and lose the fight. Another good 'initiator' semi carries are Templar Assasin and Puck although puck plays more of a straight initiator. Puck has a very high skill cap though and I don't suggest for newbies.

I'm not really a newbie (been playing the game for 200 hours), but I lack a good judgment, and that's vital when playing Puck. I still need a lot of practice, but I'll try to play Puck someday

Templar Assassin is a lot of fun, quite easy to play to in my opinion.

Yea TA is easy but what makes the difference between a good and great TA is lining up Psi Blades to harass in the solo mid.

Also a hero I love to play although I haven't played him a lot recently is Clockwork. Great initiator and ganker.

I don't think I've ever seen a good Clockwerk, ever

As for me, I've been playing a lot of Invoker again. I'm not sure why, but it's a lot of fun. Especially Sunstrike :W

They've nerfed Invoker into the ground so hard it's just not viable to play him unless he doesn't miss a last hit for the first 4 minutes and has phase and a force staff within 13 minutes. His base damage is awful, don't get me wrong he is one of the most complex, dynamic, and most fun heroes to play, but you just don't see him get picked up in Pro games anymore.

As for clockwork he has just recently been jumping into the meta and his strength is really good as a solo mid or solo off-laner. he can kill any hero 1v1 if he hits his hook shot. He has a medium skill cap because of the hook and that's probably why you don't see any good clockworks or to be honest any clockworks at all just because all pubs/ casual players would rather play another hero.

I haven't really noticed him being nerfed all too hard. Sure, not as viable as he once was, but I feel like he can still wreak havoc if played properly

By the way, I don't think I've ever seen OD (Outworlds Devourer) being played in pro games, is it due to how Int dependent he is? Because he could be viable in some cases :V

BKB makes his damage non existent and in most pro games the majority of the teams only fight when BKBs are up or off of CD. plus he is a squishy hero compared to others that don't get countered by BKB.

Of course, how could I miss that *facepalm*

Oh well, he's fun as hell to play in pub games, where nobody really cares about countering. I played a pub game yesterday with 5 carries in my team. It went really good, despite not having an initiator or support :/

Yea pub games can be the strangest just do to the fact it doesn't matter what your team's composition is and you can still win. Me and my friends won with a 5 healer team once. It was hilarious. We all knew that if we didn't end the game in about 20 minutes then we would get stomped, but we won.

Slark is a good hero if played correctly. He needs early levels and a decent level of farm. He has a high skill cap because positioning is key for his abilities and passives. He can snowball very quickly but can be shut down very easily with wards or a gem. Good on you for playing Slark if all you want to do is win then he is a decent hero to win with. He fits into any lineup fairly well and can force the other team to spend money on those detection items.

If you're new to the game then I suggest playing a multitude of heros in bot games or play a game-type other than all pick. Your win rate will most definitely suffer, but being able to play any roll is key to winning later on when you start playing in higher skill brackets.

I'm not new to the game, I've just got back into it after a couple of months break, i have around 350 hours played. I usually hit random to test heros, mainly for the excuse of "I randomed did you expect me to play perfectly?" But that extra bit of gold does indeed help a lot, the first time i played spark my team forced me mid, having no clue what I was doing I picked up 1st blood against a drow then realised how powerful his ult was, proceeded to roam the match, I believe the score I got in the end was something along the lines of 25/2/10.

Yea like I said he's a great snowball hero and mid is a good place to put him if the person is good in 1v1. It will give him quick levels and decent farm because of his ultimate. If you are able to control runes then early and mid game can be won single-handedly.

I'm not the biggest fan of people using the random button to test out new heros because that excuse is awful the only reason you should hit the random button is because you don't care what you play but will do well with whatever hero you are given. Learning new heroes should be done in Random Draft, Single Draft, All Random, and Least Played. that's just my opinion, honestly you are free to play however you want (It is a game :)), but  I have over 1800 hours logged on my main account and I really hate when people random and have no clue on how to play the hero they've been given. I don't random anymore because I like to win and I know I wont always win with a random pick, thus why I have gone on a Lone Druid binge because I know I will win roughly 70% of my games no matter what.

I can play just about every hero well, and my understanding of the game is great enough that even if I have no clue of the here's abilities I should do fine. If I do get a hero that I know I suck at then I just replica and go straight for a safe pick like drow. Whenever I want a guaranteed win I play Lycan jungle, I think I've won every match I've played as him, he's just so OP :D

So long as your team are not morons that is ;)

I could never get on with lone Druid, he interest me a little but I'm yet to have a great game as him, my matches haven't been bad, they've just not been great :P

With so many hours logged, would you happen to have the mythical slark dagger?

I was super into Dota for a while, but haven't played much over the past month.

I only randomed in all pick or did single draft for quite a while. I had tried out most of the heroes in co-op bot games before I started randoming though, but every once and a while I'd get a hero I was clueless on. Later on I switched to just picking whatever my team needed, because occasionally you random a carry, and then your team procedes to pick 4 more carries. And that's always shitty.

In lieu of the "what heroes do you like to play?" discussion:

I still enjoy wex/exort Invoker despite the nerfs. He has some limitations, primarily his lack of rune control and the fact that unlike a lot of other mids that become very effective gankers at lv 6, he doesn't really start to shine until he gets more levels.

However, despite that, there's nothing quite like the joy of doing a Eul's scepter sun strike/ meteor/ deafening blast combo and watching your opponent just completely melt in the mid game. And cold snap + forge spirit is pretty powerful in the early game. Overall he's just a fun character to play, and I like how his play style shifts dramatically from the early game to late game. He may not be a top tier pick, but I don't really play in a high enough skill bracket for that to matter.

Besides that, I primarily play either offlane or support. Windrunner and dark seer are probably my favorite offlane heroes (Clockwerk as well when playing on Radiant, but I'm not so sure now since the cogs nerf in the last patch?). Rubick, shadow demon, and veno are my favorite supports. And you can never go wrong with batrider mid.

I rarely play carry, but occasionally when my team needed a hard carry I did enjoy Gyro and Naix a lot. I haven't played naix since the open wounds nerf, though.

EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention CHEN! One of my absolute favorites. I usually don't pick him in pub games because I'm afraid I'll screw up the micro, and sometimes it can be hard to get someone to pick an offlane hero in pubs. But he's one of my favorite heroes to play just for fun.

Unfortunately I don't have the dagger I'm guessing its from a chest or random drop because I couldn't find any Slark Items in the store.

Lycan is generally a good pick but is easily countered if early pressure is put on him.

I love my Lone Druid the key is getting a 25 min Radiance with boots up. if you do that you have essentially wont the game if you can micro efficiently with him. I normally play him in jungle in Pub games because I don't trust to get support in the safe lane. Although when I play him mid I completely destroy the other teams mid. Off lane is tough/fun/doable, but I don't prefer it.

I love Invoker, although its been a sad road of nerfs because of TI2 (When all you saw was Morphling and Invoker) he is definitely the highest skill cap hero to win with. Off-laning with Clock is tons of fun if you get solo those quick levels allow so much fun with roaming Hook Shot combos. I used to play support only but I quickly saw that when I supported I would be stuck with another support who wouldn't buy anything to help me get some items and I'd be supporting the one guy who picks a carry and can't CS to save his life. Thus I have transitioned to exclusivly playing Lone Druid. I'm no AdmiralBulldog, but I consider myself a very good Lone Druid.

Same here, I feel like he can still be very dangerous if you play smart from the start and gain a gold and experience lead. Easier said than done perhaps, but Invoker has a lot of spells to his disposal that helps achieving this
