Samurshy 708 August 21, 2012 Share August 21, 2012 So in the first episode of Friendship is Magic Celestia and Luna are both referred to as Unicorns. On the Hasbro's MLP facebook page they dubbed Luna as a Unicorn Pegasus. Yet even though there has been different mainstream iterations, the storyboard artist Sabrina Alberghetti calls them Alicorns. So what is the right term? Is there a correct term for the race of Ponies that Celestia, Luna, and Cadenza are? Is Hasbro Trying to troll everypony? What I think is that the reason why Hasbro said "Unicorn Pegasus" when referring to Luna, is that A.) they don't want to completely commit to an almost fan made name for the race. B.) They assume that it is only little girls that like the FB page and so they think that it hardly matters what they call them, just as long as the younger children get the gist of it. and C.) As I said with B I think they not only want to make sure children get the gist of it, but that the children can actually understand what they are describing the Princesses are, because they assume that most children have no idea what an alicorn is. Those are my thoughts what are yours? [CLICK THE SIG FOR OC] (Signature created by Azura) Shinobu is best girl.
XUNUSEDXXX 3,459 August 21, 2012 Share August 21, 2012 Well, you have to remember that the audience is also little kids, so they might not understand what Alicorn means, so they simplified it to Unicorn Pegasus in the show.
vinolent cupcakes 24 August 21, 2012 Share August 21, 2012 Well, you have to remember that the audience is also little kids, so they might not understand what Alicorn means, so they simplified it to Unicorn Pegasus in the show. Ya, they have to simplify some things in order for the show to stay interesting for their target audience, sort of like how technically AJ's trait is Trustworthiness, and RD's is Camaraderie, Pinkie's is Enthusiasm, Fluttershy's is Consideration, Rarity's is Charitability, and Twilight's is Charisma.
NavelColt 22,882 August 21, 2012 Share August 21, 2012 I use Alicorn, personally, as a sort of official term, with 'Pegasus Unicorn' being the unofficial, more direct way of saying their species.
Pegasistersincethe80s 126 August 21, 2012 Share August 21, 2012 I always liked the term "Winged Unicorn" myself.. I had never heard the term Alicorn before this show.
Valureon 93 August 21, 2012 Share August 21, 2012 (edited) Well..... I say Alicorn as it just seems to sound better...... They probably just use Pegasus unicorn as an easier thing to understand...... To sort of dumb it down a bit ..... But honestly I have no idea which one is "correct" ........ actually they are probably both correct, now that I think about it.... Just different words used to describe the same thing I guess Edited August 21, 2012 by Valureon Made by C.Discord
SonOfTheNorthe 412 August 21, 2012 Share August 21, 2012 (edited) Actually "The eldest used her unicorn magic to raise the sun at dawn" It doesn't actually call her a unicorn, it just states she has unicorn magic. PonyEcho 1,610 August 21, 2012 Share August 21, 2012 well Alicorn rolls of the tongue better then Unicorn Pegasus, but it does bring up the question of whether or not they were just born that way of they are a complacently different species?. i like to think that there Alicorn's and a separate species that once had a larger kingdom then Equestria, but now they are rare in numbers my DA http://heavyecho.deviantart.com/ check my stuff out the Anime Club http://mlpforums.com/topic/48196-the-anime-club/ plz join us
Princess Snowwie 126 August 22, 2012 Share August 22, 2012 Man that is sooo weird. I think they should stick to the name alicorns because its a better description of them ^^Click the pic for oc! EWAN 31 August 22, 2012 Share August 22, 2012 I prefer to use the term "alicorn" because the term "Unicorn Pegasus" sounds to long and simple, but that's probably what they were going for in a kids show anyway. I think of it's a call it what you want topic. (still prefer alicorn though. . .) If you can read this then you have pony swag. Friend me,i'll bring muffins! Samurshy 708 August 22, 2012 Author Share August 22, 2012 Or how about, Horned Avian Equine? Break it down to its fundamental roots people. But I actually personally prefer Alicorn I was just asking if anyone else has other opinions. [CLICK THE SIG FOR OC] (Signature created by Azura) Shinobu is best girl. Is that a candy?"
Blackcat 205 August 23, 2012 Share August 23, 2012 An Alicorn is the scientific term for a Narwhal horn,so I say Pegacorn instead. Some people seem to get upset when I do, but oh wellz. it makes sense to me. Acoustic Cloud 2,202 August 23, 2012 Share August 23, 2012 maybe they are just, "A horse that happens to have a horn for magic and even some wings on their sides for flying" but the name is just to damn long... so let's just say alicorn.
spaghettinoodles 298 August 23, 2012 Share August 23, 2012 Alicorn sounds way better and cooler, and it seems like the term adopted by most of the fans. Pegasus Unicorn and Winged Unicorn are a bit of a mouthful. Alicorn actually is the real term for a "pegasus unicorn". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alicorn It could also mean a unicorn's horn or its magic, but I've never seen anyone use it in that context. The horn is just a horn and the magic is magic.
Cocodrillo 1,565 August 23, 2012 Share August 23, 2012 I use Alicorn too, but before I got to know about this term, I used "winged unicorn" instead. Actually I don´t know where does that "ali" come from. Try to try again To see yourself again from time to time.

Raptor 9 August 23, 2012 Share August 23, 2012 I prefer "Horny Pegasus" XD but seriously. i never even heard the term alicorn till i entered this fandom. i had only seen them referred to as Pegasus (horned or not) (SEE: Pegasus from Sailor Moon)
Blackcat 205 August 23, 2012 Share August 23, 2012 I'm telling you guys 'Pega-corn'! of course nobody would say pegasus unicorn. On the internet nothing exists today that's longer than 5 characters that doesn't get shortened down. Such is the nature of this textual society nowdays. NavelColt 22,882 December 2, 2012 Share December 2, 2012 Well, I suppose Pegasus Unicorn can be used by those who like the term, but the term 'Alicorn' is now officially canon :3 This sort of just dawned on me, honestly xD
duidamasterXD 9,627 December 2, 2012 Share December 2, 2012 Eeyup, Alicorn is now the canon terminology. It was easier and more fun to say anyway in my opinion. Cool that they adopted it into the show
Faceless 101 December 2, 2012 Share December 2, 2012 I'm sure I read somewhere that Cadence was a unicorn pegasus and not a alicorn. I thought that the difference was that alicorn a had earth pony ties as well, but unicorn pegasus things didn't... this is all very confusing. The problem is that us brownies over think everything when it comes to the show; me included... We all go a little mad sometimes... Strangers think I am quiet. Friends think I am outgoing. Best friends KNOW I am insane! Faceless Flyer: http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/faceless-flyer-r1868
Jadefire 2,798 December 2, 2012 Share December 2, 2012 Don't forget that the alicorns are meant to embodie unicorns, pegasai, AND earth ponies. Which is kinda why I dislike using the terms "unipeg" or "winged unicorn" or what-have-you. The word "alicorn" is technically incorrect, as it refers to a unicorn's horn specifically. (i.e: a unicorn is a horse that posseses an alicorn). However, I love the term Alicorn to refer to the winged unicorn, it rolls off the tongue extremely well and still has kind of a "powerful" feel to it. Ponysona bio, here.
