PonyEcho 1,610 August 30, 2012 Share August 30, 2012 i'll keep this short. i see were its coming from and there will always be a barrier from what is girly and what is for boy, and those things can result in bullying, and the need for children to fit in those barriers will stay there. removing gender-specific connotations from packaging seem like a good idea but i don't think it would be that easy my DA http://heavyecho.deviantart.com/ check my stuff out the Anime Club http://mlpforums.com/topic/48196-the-anime-club/ plz join us
DashingRainbow36 264 August 30, 2012 Share August 30, 2012 When little kids, from what I understand, play with toys meant for the other gender, it is a form of "identification". They are trying to identify with the opposite sex, and understand how they do things and what they play with. They may not know that at the beginning, but that is the explanation to it. And there are just some kids that want to play with the other genders toys because they feel that they are that other gender, but that is a completely different thing all together. “The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.”― Christopher Hitchens
Pachirisu 42 August 30, 2012 Share August 30, 2012 I just never thought "girls' toys" were interesting when I was a kid. I don't really think I was like "that's for girls/this is for boys"...I'd just much rather have played around with a TMNT truck that launched missiles or a moving Megazord with sounds and lights, than a doll that cried/peed or a Ken that just...stood there in a scarf, looking stylish. I really think parents should let kids play with whatever toys they like, whether they're "meant for" boys, girls, cats, whatever. A girl playing with Ben 10 figures won't actually do her any harm, nor would a boy having a collection of Sylvanian Families. Refusing something over supposed gender-suitability is just silly, IMO. I've never been to Harrods...that new layout looks pretty cool...

I'm a trans, and I played with army men and tanks and loved games like "Tanks" and...."Army Men" (lol) as a kid. It more has to do with the fact that fuck yeah, explosives. Also, some girls don't want that girly girl stuff like barbies. Hell, as a little kid I didn't. I thought it was ridiculous. Of course, I would jump at a chance to play "House". Heheheh. But that probably has more to do with my love of roleplay. =P 1 http://alt="img-3411728-1-kQpW0ME.png">

Lets just say my friends and I were a little more active than some with ummm..."activities"..when we were young. I think you get the picture. But back on topic, one of the friends I did activities with was a boy, but always played with his sisters dolls. Never interested me, but I was glad it made him happy. 2 “The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.”― Christopher Hitchens
Marceline 187 August 30, 2012 Share August 30, 2012 I will say I didn't read all of it, but I got the gist of the matter. I don't conform to gender roles; I don't think they should really even exist. I grew up with Barbies (granted I liked to beat them up), porcelain dolls, wrestling action figures, and Hotweels. When I was about five, I dressed up as my favourite wrestler - Sting - for Halloween. But a boy dresses up as Daphne from Scooby Doo for Halloween, and people go ballistic. Anyway, I don't think girls or boys should have to play with certain toys just because they were born male or female. There's nothing wrong with a boy playing with Barbies, or a girl with action figures. Or letting both of them have both. If I ever adopt (I physically and mentally can't handle child-bearing), I would expose the child to both "girl" and "boy" toys, colours, styles of clothing, etc. We need more open minds, and if you don't start with an open mind as a child, it's almost concrete for the rest of your life. . .
pjsforever 89 August 31, 2012 Share August 31, 2012 I used to like playing with action figures and toy cars more than with barbies when I was little. (I cut off their hair ) My parents mostly gave me stuffed animals though, so luckily there wasn't much of the girl's toy boy's toy crap going on. Parents should expose their children to both types of toys instead of just giving them what society says they're supposed to like.

Sugarcube 213 August 31, 2012 Share August 31, 2012 This makes me so happy, so so so SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Happy! Gender roles are created by a culture and society, and can have such damaging effects if taken to extremes. I was never much of a little girl, I wanted comic books and action figures and stuffed animals, I dispised dolls, I watched G.I Joe, X-men, Batman the animated series, I loved Pokemon and always the scary more "masculine" favored ones. I was teased and bullied by other little girls growing up, my mom wouldn't let me have certain toys because they were too masculine. I did do "female things" like tea parties etc. We see the damaging affects now with men that are bullied and made fun of for liking MLP because it is suppose to be "for little girls" What you are into, what you like doesn't define your gender, you can still be masculine and love mlp, or I can love G.I Joe and running around my back yard with foam swords and still be a female. Also close to my heart since I am taking Gender Communication this semester. 3 I may have been born yesterday sir, but I stayed up all night - El-P

Glaceon 793 August 31, 2012 Share August 31, 2012 Personally I grew up not really showing an interest in girl's toys. I had a friend who collected dolls though, I didn't really mind that, it made him happy and didn't affect me. Currently he has a girlfriend so I can say it didn't affect his gender orientation. People shoulc be allowed to like what they want without others rejecting or insulting them. 1 Previously: Mal (Starbolt) Eeveelutions: @Eevee: Eevee @Vaporeon: N-Harmonia : Ampharos @Flareon: Descant/Bard @Espeon: Locked @Umbreon: Lhee @Leafeon: Firebolt @Glaceon: Mal @Sylveon: DontDropThatDedenne
Titan Rising 2,156 August 31, 2012 Share August 31, 2012 My opinion: They're toys, and if I occasionally want to strap a barbie to an explosive rather than a GI Joe that's my choice and nothing you can do to stop me
Chill Mists (Chilly) 801 August 31, 2012 Share August 31, 2012 (edited) Gender roles should never have existed. They're just plain ridiculous. My little sister never cared for barbies and whatnot, she was with my brother and I with our goddamn mother bucking awesome as Hell, Hot Wheels. People should be allowed to like what they like without being ridiculed. Gender roles can go suck it. I never really liked "girly" toys, but I hardly liked any "boyish" toys either, I only liked a couple of toys, it's just that those I did like happened to be seen as things for boys. I'm sure there was some girly stuff I would've enjoyed too, I just never noticed it. notdog1996 315 September 1, 2012 Share September 1, 2012 I never played with girls toys, nor with boys toys to be honest. For me a toy is a toy and that's it. I mostly played with legos, animal figures and sometimes plastic cars. I played with lots of things but I though barbies were dull and my mom eventually stopped buying them for me since I left them in their plastic boxes. Everyone should be able to play with whatever they want. 1 INTJ Introvert(56%) iNtuitive(12%) Thinking(75%) Judging(1%) You have moderate preference of Introversion over Extraversion (56%) You have slight preference of Intuition over Sensing (12%) You have distinctive preference of Thinking over Feeling (75%) You have marginal or no preference of Judging over Perceiving (1%)
Mirad 217 September 1, 2012 Share September 1, 2012 When I was young, I didn't know the difference between girly and boyish. When we're young, whatever catches our eye is what we are interested in. There shouldn't be any kind of bullying or stereotypes added on to this, especially if it involves children. Just my outlook on things. 3 "I swear I didn't know!" -Myself

notdog1996 315 September 1, 2012 Share September 1, 2012 I just found this: This girl gets it. Some people may think that she's repeating her parents thoughts but I don't think so. Why? Stardust 641 October 5, 2020 Share October 5, 2020 (edited) I mean why not its good to play with a variety of things toys r just toys really u can play with them in whatever way u want and imagine things. Generally as a kid I prefered neutral toys i liked animals and stuff. I also liked a bit of boys stuff if dinsoaurs or adventure stuff occasionally cars. Girly stuff was meh if too girly if its a playhouse or somethin yeah some of the small cute toys were fun to play with lol. I did have one of those hair design bag things given to me i mostly used it on my dad for him it was an excuse to get his hair brushed for free. I guess cooking stuff is kinda seen as girly too (weird cuz guys become chefs) and then there are diy sets which are supposed for boys I guess. I think there was a period of time which things like diy sets, cooking and baby sets were marketed neutrally but ofc they thought that targeted stuff makes more money and having to buy toys twice for girls and boys is extra to spend oof. Justin_Case001 4,900 October 8, 2020 Share October 8, 2020 The more we can tear down the arbitrary barriers, the better.
