Drawing Ponies - Attempt Two

My second attempt (ever) at drawing MLP characters. I did it because... I wanted to.

 

Haha, anyway, here you go. I took good advice and stopped using black to outline, but I couldn't figure out how to do anything but soft shading. Further critique would be great!

Thank you! I'm hoping that I can get to the point where I can consistently draw really well and develop my own style. It'll take work, because I still feel a little artistically challenged, but I'll get there!

Amazing if this is your second attempt then what will your last attempt look like. My second attempt (and at the moment last) was not even close to as good as yours is.

My process goes like this (and it's longer than it would take with a tablet, which I don't have).

 

Sketch

Scan

Outline in Gimp (freeware program comparable to photoshop)

(I use mouse + shift to do straight lines and outline quickly.)

Fill lined areas with basic, flat colors

Refine everything with various tools

Add shading using soft brushes and dodge/burn tool

Last minute touches

Add a background (I've been keeping a transparent background until the pony is done so far).

Excellent job with the drawing, though next time go a little easier with the shading, and use bolder lines if you're trying for 'show accuracy'. The amount of shading you have right now makes it look like she's covered in dirt.

The front left leg looks a bit odd in terms of position, at least to me. That's the most noticeable criticism which comes to mind. Still really like it though, the coloring is very nice and certainly I'm interested to see where you go from here.

 

Well, it was meant to be slightly above the ground, though you can't really tell due to lack of ground or a shadow on the floor. But thanks for the tip, I'll try to make sure my next one looks better!

It looks really good actually! Nice work on the shading and stuff. It looks like the front leg is the wrong shape but it's not much of a big deal. Maybe you could have worked more on the eyes

Anyways, I feel the right side of her bodies legs should be moved in closer to her since it looks awkward how her legs bend and it doesn't appear like she's got them on anything, like they're floating in air. Also try next time adding in some whites in her sclera beside her iris to make them richer in detail.

Looks like you're time to go into detail! Also, remember to make it clearer where the hooves are pointing.

For shading, just try not using any blending tools and see how you go with that? Use low opacities to build it a kind of gradient.

Lastly, try playing with the colours for tonality. E.g. desaturated blue-purple for shades, light and bright yellow-orange for highlights? Remember that when the light source is warm the shades are cold, and when the light source is cold the shadows are warm.
