Hey guys, sorry I didn't know where to put this but can anyone tell me where can I get Windows Movie Maker 4 for free? Because my windows movie maker is totally broken, it lags in and turns off once in a while...

Windows Movie Maker is free, you should be able to get it from the Windows website. I believe it's a part of their Essentials package thingie, not sure though.

 

May I suggest posting stuff like this in General, though? It's not really life advice.

There are a few options.

 

If you are running Windows XP, reinstall Movie Maker using the "Windows Features" button in Add/Remove Programs.

 

If you are running Windows Vista, you can download version 2.6 of Movie Maker from Microsoft's Website (Here).

 

In all other cases, you are stuck with the Essentials version, which isn't half bad actually. Its changed quite a bit since the initial release, and is slightly better than the XP version. You should at least give it a try!

 

Hopefully that helps! I'd recommend trying to move away from Movie Maker though. While its good, it does have a habit of slowing down or crashing/freezing. A neat (and free) alternative is called Lightworks, but there are 2 side effects: 1) You need to have a decent video card and 2) its more complex than MM, but if you're willing to learn it, it is a great piece of software.

The program is absolute garbage. It makes all files turn into absolute shit.

 

There are much better free programs out there.

Well not everyone needs to or wants to know how to compress files for HD formatted for youtube, or how pixel aspect ratios work.

Well, if he is going for quality, he won't be getting it with WMM.

He actually never stated why he wanted it, and I gave my reasons why he shouldn't get it.

Not everyone is like me where I just go "oh sod it all" and pirate Adobe Premiere Pro. Even so, any of these programs can unfortunately make people think they know what the professional of video editing entails, and call themselves hobbyist Video Editors.

Not everyone is like me where I just go "oh sod it all" and pirate Adobe Premiere Pro. Even so, any of these programs can unfortunately make people think they know what the profession of Video Editing entails, and call themselves hobbyist video editors.

 

I can honestly say I don't know the first thing about editing.

I don't want Vegas, or any of the high class stuff. It's too complicated to me.

But WMM is horrible.

I used it for years, and I was told time and time again how bad it is.

As another person who has used this systems for many many many years, I would love to know other (free) alternatives to WMM. I can agree with Princess Hime that it is a very frustrating program to work with from time to time. I'd want a better Movie making program that offers me more than what WMM offers, but nothing too fancy.

Movie Maker is good for quite a lot of things. It does get really bad when you're trying to do a lot of editing work or have a long movie, buts its not designed for that either. Its designed for family movies and small clips, hence why its kind of crappy. You'll almost never see a major film being produced in MM (or iMovie for that matter.).

 

The XP version of it is good, and the new essentials version is pretty decent. The Vista version and previous essentials versions suck.
