Motion Spark 7,807 September 6, 2012 Share September 6, 2012 So, I'm doing a lot of pony art lately and posting it in the forums, I notice that people can easily download my drawings and I have nothing against it, really. It really flatters me that someone else likes my art But most artists put their sign their drawings anyways, obviously to protect them from any kind of fraud. I'm not used to signing my drawings, because from my perspective it lowers the beauty of the art itself, so I never do it, but I'm considering it. Do you guys think I should sign all my art from now then? 2 My OC's: Motion Spark || Beat Spark || Rosebelle Sorry, I don't take REQUESTS!
Pan the Fabulous Ferret 2,642 September 6, 2012 Share September 6, 2012 oh absolutely, but if you do, then it doesnt nessecarrily have to take away from the overall quality of the piece. You could find a way to blend your "signature" into your artwork, or just make it small in the corner.

Titan Rising 2,156 September 6, 2012 Share September 6, 2012 I'm not a huge fan of signing my art either, i think it takes away from it. It's like "here's my art but i signed it so everyone knows it was me that made it HA!" If you are worried about someone claiming it as their own I think there is something you can do on deviant art to say you don't want people using it or to reserve the rights for it. I usually don't care about that sort of stuff though because I don't intend to make any money from my drawings or stuff like that
Vicke 3,189 September 6, 2012 Share September 6, 2012 A signature can easily be removed from the image AND it sort of ruins it. So i do not think you should include your signature in your drawings. Its a waste of quality and time. Signature made by Kyoshi
Neikos 968 September 6, 2012 Share September 6, 2012 (edited) Signatures serve different purposes. Making it hard for people to claim it as their own can be one of them but that is really silly to actually believe into. ( The internet does not like being restricted and thus often doesn't allow you to restrict it. ) But signatures serve other purposes. They can be a brand. Making questions like "Who made that so I can tell them how awesome it is?" redundant. But it also serves as a stamp of approval that it is truly yours. ( Yes it can be faked. So what? Anyone can put your name on something, shouldn't deter you from doing it on your own work. ) Often they are witty, signatures do not need to be well... signatures. They can be icons from an artist. Like perhaps his original character? Or perhaps something recurring in the background? It's up to the author to find something that makes both him and his follower enjoy the piece of art, and that is a true signature. ( Anything else is just a ugly scribble in the corner making you believe that you did something that has some value ) EDIT: I forgot to add that if you want to add a signature just for the sake of it you should reconsider what you are actually doing and if you really want to sign what you have just made. ( You know in case someone might hold it against you. ) Edited September 6, 2012 by Neikos the Omniscient 2 I love you! <

I usually don't care about that sort of stuff though because I don't intend to make any money from my drawings or stuff like that ding ding ding!!! you really hit the nail on that one, for example, I made requests for some users in here, and I delivered them secretly, and I didn't stamped my signature because it's unfair for the person, I forcing them to receive all the credit myself for a gift that I voluntarily gave, I didn't aske the people for any kind of recognition, you will never know who is carrying one of my designs. but I would feel betrayed if someone claimed that he/she did one of my drawings on another site like deviantart A signature can easily be removed from the image AND it sort of ruins it. Sweets 198 September 6, 2012 Share September 6, 2012 do you suggest signing it even if it's a request for another person, like a profile pic or an animated siggy that I gave as a gift? Avatars and signatures can definitely be made, provided someone gives credit, without a signature. An art commission or request is different, definitely sign those. Flow 1,629 September 6, 2012 Share September 6, 2012 I see no reason on why it's a mistake, but I do prefer to sign my work, usually with the date. Even if I don't include a signature, I still put the date because I like to remember when did I drew that piece. OCs: Flow / Love Bloom

A lot of people like the artist signature on the piece of work. For me, the signature also kind of gives a sense of pride and accomplishment but every artist is different.
FizzyImp 1,838 September 6, 2012 Share September 6, 2012 By letting people know where something came from, it can give it that extra sprinkle of professionalism, even if you don't think it needs it. If you wanna make signatures a little less tedious, find a way to have fun with them. One of my great-grandad's paintings was a reflection drawn from the mirror of his car, so he signed his name backwards 1 "My breakfast is plotting to kill me." Hazardus_Havard. 479 September 7, 2012 Share September 7, 2012 (edited) I've seen these types of discussions pop up from time to time where ever I go, usually involving if it convoluted the image with such a thing and about taking of art without others even knowing on it. When I usually do art I just place a very simple MEH in the corner somewhere, which is my initials. I've seen some people get really creative doing nice logos for their work that have a very appealing look to it. You could try either of these, just make sure they are out of the way of the art and don't hurt the overal structure. One thing though, do NOT put watermarks on your work. Most artists do this as a way to keep their stuff from being stolen, especially if they are trying to sell it. Often times that just pisses off anyone that likes your work. Some people like to use work done as wallpaper or even share it with others but the watermark just makes it very undesirable to even look at so best avoid that at all. If you want to sell work don't watermark it, just shrink it and make the work able to be enlarged for prints. Why artists don't think of this is beyond me... As additional input I can see watermarks being used for PHOTOGRAPHS since people usually need stock images but have to get licenses for commercial use for them. It's hard to see if they can be used for commercial use on whatever someone needs it for so people often times people blow them up nice and large enough for use, the watermark is for protection. In art though we can easily downplay the way it looks by making the dpi on it smaller, pixelating certain images or even just adding a small image that can't be made large without purchasing the image before hand.
