gaming Best video game A.I.?

I've been recently playing a lot of Team Fortress 2's offline mode due to a few internet issues I'm having lately. And I've come to notice that the bot's AI (Artificial Intelligence) is simply bad. :|

Not only they break very often - getting stuck in the spawn and such - but they're also pretty cheap sometimes. Snipers and Heavies have perfect aim and, depending on the difficulty you choose, they'll always notice you if you're a Spy.

But I've also realised that it's extremely hard to program a perfect AI and I don't think I've ever found a game that had a "perfect" and satisfying bot AI. So, my question is very simple: What was the best bot A.I. that you've ever found in any game, and why?

I think that the best (or less worse) one I've seen so far is the Super Smash Bros. Brawl one. They're well-programmed, that's for sure. But they're just too easy. :P

I think that the most perfect A.I. I've ever found was in Starcraft 2, Single player, Custom game, and Brtual A.I.

They programmed it after someone, a very good player, but it does not always do the same building order that it does with the same race. It's always diferent. It is just... Perfect. It also surrenders in the right situations, instead of making a base in some corner of the map, beeing a good player.

One of the best A.I's I have found is when playing Dota 2 if you play with bots and against them they actually tell you where they are, what they are about to do so if you wanted to kill an opposition they will come and help you if you ping the map it may not sound amazing but I think its really clever

I agree i was going to say Dota2, they are really good and can test even a good player's skills when you play against the best.

The fact that they also try and team work with you (like you mentioned) is also really cool, they only issues ive had is that they don't dodge pudge hooks :)

Dwarf Fortress has amazing AI, it's capable of generating thousands of years of realistic history with major characters and disasters and naming countries and every thing. It controls the climate and what lives in every area of a gigantic map, as well as each individual creature's hunger, injuries, even looks and personality.

I admit it does have some stupid points, though - dwarves can be stubborn at times.

If you're talking about all A.I., I always thought Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction had some really smart AI. They actually investigate dead bodies, gunshots, blown out lights, and all that good stuff.

Half-Life 1 had one of the best A.I. for it's times. Enemy grunts could use cover efficiently and throw grenades at you when you were in cover.

F.E.A.R. 1 had a pretty good A.I. too. Enemies would do things like use squad tactics such as flanking (or atleast pretend they were), and use the environnement to generate new cover. They also reacted to light and noise (that's from what I can remember)

Most of the Half Life Series has pretty good A.I., GRID has good racing A.I., and Supreme Commander Forged Alliance has amazing A.I. for an RTS.

Phoenix Wright? Oh wait, just kidding. EVERYTHING in that game is pre-programmed. Darn.

Ummmmmmmmmmm.......Ah! Wait, no...

The only game A.I I can think of that dosen't just repeat a set of patterns (Like Megaman or Zelda) is Pokemon, and even then it still sucks.

"OH YOU HAVE A FIGHTING TYPE? I GUESS I'LL USE WATER SPORT!"

Objection! Hold it! Take that! Gotcha! Eureka!

I like video games and anime.

If your talking about AIs, then I might as well say Minecraft.

The mobs are definitely smarter than before, and are becoming even smarter... who knows how much of a challenge they will become later in the future.

Half Life 2...my favorite. It has amazing A.I. (Not to mention that this was made around 2003 and 2004, from which they had squads fallowing you, the enemies beating the *yay* out of you, and the how the characters play along as if it was a cutscene played out in front of you....haveI said enough? XD

Postal 2 had some good AI, the people either ran scared or tried to fight back upon seeing a gun, pickup stuff off the ground, (if you're wearing the cop uniform) greet you with "hello officer", upon seeing a dead body will sometimes make them puke. gotta love that smart AI for a 2003 game

I'm going to have to agree, Half-Life 2 has my favorite. Even though it was from 2003, nothing has topped it. The allies aren't brainless idiots who will trap you in a room full of zombies, and if you're in a more open, complex environment the Combine soldiers will split up and use cover intelligently, but they're still not too smart for you to have fun.

That's really all there is to say on the matter.

  • 12 years later...

MGS2's guard AI really helps elevate the game's stealth mechanics, every guard has their own system rather work in a hivemind like other games in the series did. They also are more aware of their surroundings, and in alert phase they bring entire squads with riot gear and depending on the difficulty, will actively clear the room, meaning even lockers and vents aren't a guarantee

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R games come to mind for me. In combat the AI varies depending on the enemy type and how experienced they are. Bandits and other low level enemies will generally not be as accurate or use cover and movement as well as high level mercs or military members. Who tend to use cover in a pretty smart way, while also actively flanking you if possible. They won’t just rush your sight line and get mowed down instantly like in a Bethesda game for example. Pretty impressive for the time it came out. And even today really.
