Adding "Nicknames" to users

Lonewolf

Recommended Posts

I had this idea after looking at Steam's new features.

Basically, this would let you add a constant "nickname" to a user that would appear next to their current name. Preferably it would need to be in parentheses or brackets and in another color to distinguish it from the display name.

This would be a nice addition since there are some members that change names and avatars/signatures to the point where it's sometimes difficult to know who they are.

It's probably a good idea. What do you think?

Sounds like a good idea to me, as not only do some users change names quite often, but some, like my friend drizzlestar, prefer to be called by a shorter version of their username, in his case "driz." I definitely support this idea.

I could double my doctorate influence and name myself [Doctor] Doctor XFizzle. Ha ha! The Doctor has been doubled!

I assume the nickname would be permanent and unchangeable right?

but then others could use it for purposes that aren't used as nicknames

That's why nicknames would be visible only to the person who put them. For example, If I put a "nickname" to, say, you, I'd be the only one to be able to see it. Another person could do the same and only see the nickname they gave you and so on.

I don't know if a thing like that can be implemented in the forums since the nickname on the forums would be server-side while Steam does it client-side, I believe.

That depends. If nicknames are implemented so only the person who puts it can see it, then there's no point in making it permanent. But if it's visible all across the forums, why not?

I like the idea! I have seen certain members who have changed their name, and then have to reintroduce themselves because nopony recognized them. ._. So yeah, I think this will help out the forums a lot! However, I think you should only be able to do this after a certain amount of posts. Maybe when you reach the cupcake status you can add a nickname. But I like your idea! :)

Also, I think that if you want to change your nickname, there's no cost to it. It's not like a username, where you have only 3 times to change it. This way, you ca always edit it. ;)

I thought in the first post you were saying that users should have the ability to set their own nickname.

I think User A setting a nickname for User B would be a bit pointless because setting your own nickname seems to make a little more sense to me.

It'd probably lead to some immaturity if either option were the case though...

I could be something like "afnsgdhskj" and people would still know that I'm akimBrony because of the nickname thing  (That, and all the Applejack stuff I have in mah profile :P)

Bring in the brohoofs my little ones. I mean, uh... Thanks for the support guys!

users should have the ability to set their own nickname.

Maybe that would be a better idea. But I don't know. What's the point in keeping track of a person if you don't put your own nickname so that you can figure easily who he/she is (as long as other people can't see it).

It'd probably lead to some immaturity if either option were the case though...

People can also be immature with their display names seeing as they can change it 3 times per month. But yeah, it's a valid point. That's why I think only the person who put the nickname should be able to see it.

I just realized what you meant by adding nick names, and as long as this isn't too hard to implement, I see no problem with this idea. Honestly, the only hurdle would be if it's worth the time Scoot hypothetically will put into this.

This one is a tad less creepy. Wouldn't you agree?

If only the person who sets the user name can see it...What's the point, exactly? That sort of defeats the purpose, I'd think. This seems like a strange idea. Maybe if you could set your OWN nick name and everypony could see it, I'd agree that it'd be kinda cool.

Objection! Hold it! Take that! Gotcha! Eureka!

I like video games and anime.

The point would still remain the same : Easy distincion of different users. But, well since everyone wants to set their own nicknames I guess something could be worked out.

Yeah, this would seem good for me and most others.

I've seen people who don't like to be called by their full name, especiall with numbers.

It would be a good way to call someone by a name without getting it wrong or asking, "What should I call you?"

Honestly, this seems a good Idea, but I think it needs to be diplayed right under their uername in bold, a space above their rank.

If you didn't need to become a Premium Member in order to do it, Custom Member Titles would kind of beat out this purpose. But, since you do...

I dunno, I suppose it'd be interesting. I'm not really for or against the idea.

This would mean

Member Name

Member Nickname

Member Title

Avatar

hm three names? Nah I don't think this is necessary actually.

For you it's three names :P For most people it's two names and the rank they are in generic text. Again, Custom Member Titles make this idea kind of redundant, but only a percentage of the forum has access to actually making their member title something other than it's normal stock text.

Member Title

Well, non-donators can't change member title. And this nickname is a personal nickname members assign to other members for themselves. Essentially a tag of sorts. Pretty useful when members change everything, but otherwise not too useful. So this'll be something that Scoot should implement, when he has the time, which is never.

I do know that. I still think this is a bit unnecessary. You don't really need more ways of showing who you are on the forums. I like it as it is
