What would happen to Equestria if Celestia and Luna were deposed?

Okay, imagine this 1991-like situation: Celestia and Luna. Poof. No longer in charge. What happened? Doesn't matter - resignation, coup d'état, suddenly disappeared, whatever. All you need to know is that they are no longer in control of Equestria and the system that has stood in place for thousands of years has basically collapsed as a result. What happens next?

 

Riots between the different races of pony or the ordinary ponies (somewhat like a Balkan situation) against the social elite? A series of coups? Invasion by hostile neighboring countries? New system of government established (Presidential, Parliamentary, Military, etc)?

 

What I'm asking you is, in your own opinion, A) what do you think would happen realistically? or B: What would you personally prefer to happen?

 

Well, here's my view and it's kind of a blend of realistic and my own preference. I actually can see the whole thing as post-soviet Russia. We get an elective autocratic leader with a rich political elite and the creation of a few billioners (the Unicorns, most likely), millions are left poorer than before (the Earth Ponies), with one group in society forming the basis for extremisim and separatism, ie the Far Right or the Chechens (the Pegasi would most fit this).

I wouldn't be surprised if Cadence and Shining Armour stepped in to do a little provisional governing until a replacement for Celestia and Luna is found. Personally I'd like to see a coalition government by the Mane 6 but that'll be unlikely to happen

The three races appear to have completely eradicated their bigotry from the days of old. I don't think we would see any kind of racial division or nationalism. About the only thing that would change is the unicorns would have to resume their ancient duty of maintaining the cycle of night and day.

 

The next in line to rule would be Cadence. Who knows what she's capable of? Probably nothing practical.

What would happen? Many things. Personally i think Cadance and Shining Armor would take over.

 

I wonder who will take responsibilty of the moon and sun. Or will they never see day again? That would be catastrophic. Dificulty growing food, difficulty seeing. Other nations getting angry with no sun. Most likely war. Yeah, famines, droughts, war. All that stuff.

 

How the government will change though... eh i think it would become like Britain. There is a monarchy but some sort of law-making body makes many of the decisions. If there becomes war, evetually it would become a millitary government or a dictatorship

 

What would happen the mane six though is a better question tough. Celestia was Twilights mentor and someone she loved. Twilights mind would definatly change, whether just simple depression and she moves on, or perhaps a deep depression, or maybe she even goes insane. As soon as it happens shes probably gonna want to find her. And enlist her friends to help her. But if they can't find her, Twi is probably not gonna give up. Probably doing whatever it takes... to find her. You know how Twilight can go to extremes, if she still would think they are still out there, don't know what would happen. She made a big mess fussing over a small problem. Imagine this!

It would be just like the story in Hearth's Warming Eve. The ponies would begin to fight until some leaders step up and take charge of the situation. Don't know who they would be.

The unicorns assume control of canterlot, obviously twilight has to figure out how to raise the sun and moon. If the unicorns (particularly blueblood) tried to exert power over equestria then the pegasi might secede/declare war. We might have to rehash hearths warming eve all over again. But it will feel more justified because blueblood isn't responsible enough to dress himself much less lead a country.

Well the sun and moon would stop working, and if the unicorns can't figure out how to move them, everypony's pretty much screwed. Unless they get the help of the only other being who can move the sun and moon - Discord.

I didn't initially think of Cadance and Shining Armor, but they would probably take charge (considering Cadance is the only remaining alicorn).

 

Twilight being pushed into a position of huge power/responsibility is also likely considering how amazing she is with organization, and also the fact that she's Shining Armor's sister. Politics would not treat her well though...

 

As for the sun and moon, all the unicorns would have to take care of it together again, like what they did before Celestia and Luna took on that responsibility.

Cadence would probably rule if the other two alicorns were to vanish.

 

BUT: I think the initial question pretty much meant all the alicorns are gone without it being explicitly stated that way.

 

In that case you would end up with the Canterlot Nobility vs the Elements of Harmony. Round 1 would probably go to the nobles but the first time some major disaster happened the pendulum would shift to the Elements of Harmony and they would end up ruling.

A lot of you are saying Cadance and Shining Armor would most likely take over. However, let us not forget that those two are going to be sent off to take over the Crystal Empire in Season 3 (we ALL know that's what's happening), so that somewhat puts a damper on that theory.

I actually can imagine the three races of pony slowing starting to get at each other's throats, right after going after the social elite, in which they notice the vast majority are unicorns and a few Pegasi. I can even imagine a communist movement amongst the Earth ponies, seizing back the land and creating a classless society. I mean, the Earth Ponies are pretty much the the labouring class in Equestria and mostly work on the land - it can genuinely happen and that's one of the scariest things..

I think that the ponies would start their own government, but keep it fair like the one Celestia and Luna did. Working together to keep anyone evil down out of power while working for each other to survive.

They are awesome, no one's denying that. But I'm one of the biggest dash fanboys around and even I might not trust her with that much power. In the vague future yes, but not now. And (game of thrones fan here) the job of the leader doesn't necessarily go to the one who is best suited for it. Is Twi a better leader than a lot of the Canterlot aristocrats? Probably, but I can't imagine her going after power. I can imagine the canterlot people doing it though. Although in favor of the Twilight, RD, AJ solution they have historically had worse leaders (just look at hearths warming eve)

I think there would be no more day and night... so that would leave an unbalanced kind of solar eclipse kind of thing... dark while still light... but I don't think other races of the world could invade equestria, because Celestia doesn't have her magic in the soldiers. The soldiers have their own front and magic with which they fight, they would be 'tangled' in a way at first that there's no princess to command the captain or general in charge, but they would eventually pick a pony for that. I do think that without the balance of sleep and getting up, ponies will go coocoo bananas like twilight did when she couldn't write a letter to Celestia.

Ooh I like prompts like this. I think Prince Blueblood will succeed the throne but he'll turn out to be a complete idiot, but they can't have him removed unless he gives up the throne himself. Which he does not want to, because honestly? Who wants to give up riches? So the mane 6 are called in to clean up all of his messed everytime he screws something up. And perhaps Equestria will end up being invaded by Queen Chrysalis, and so Equestria ends up being split into two parts. The Changeling District and the Blue Pony City- Oh my gosh I just got an idea for a fan fic! This idea is copyright to me (Cloud Twister)! RAWR!
