Hey. I wanna started playing some horror games. Any suggestions for first horror games? I'm not taking suggestions for Amnesia or Slender since those are some of the scariest games ever.

Amnesia and Slander aren't scary

now I highly recommend you find a copy of Silent Hill 2 (do not get the HD remake ) it's the one game that everyone need to play for that true horror experience

other then that i would recommend every other Silent hill game (mainly the older ones) and the first 3 Resident Evils (but play RE 0 instead of 1)

I agree with the Silent Hill suggestion. Amnesia was by far the best horror game I've ever played. Yes, it was scary. However, by the time I found it scary enough to quit, I was too far into the game to just stop. Also, if you have a DS, Theresia is very good as well.

Overall, I have the same relationship to horror games as I do to those seasonal haunted houses. I'm very morbidly curious and attracted to them in general, but I'm also very easily scared lol.

Aliens vs. Predator: Classic 2000 on Steam.

It's not a traditional horror game, as it's more of an action FPS game, but it is incredibly scary.

Gonna quote from the Horror games topic where I describe it better.

And the scariest game for me is Aliens vs. Predator, and not for resource starvation or because the enemies look scary.

Oh no, not because they look scary at all. It's scary because your primary enemy, the kainde amedha (xenomorph, alien), is nature's perfect killing machine that even in its death can be a lethal weapon (and the amount of time you'll screw yourself over or kill yourself simply by killing one is quite high when learning what to do and what not to do in the game). Their speed, is enough to give Dashie a run for her money. They can climb on any surface in the game (which works nicely with their speed, in their favour). They are quite durable as well, able to lose their tail, both legs, and an arm and keep coming after you, or both arms and their tail and keep coming after you. Their colour blends in well to the surroundings, making them difficult to detect at times. They are also almost entirely unscripted in their spawns, so there's no "clear room, rest, find supplies, go to next room, repeat" part to the game. It's more "clear room, turn around, more kainde amedha coming after you" thing. They do not stop spawning, and if you enter a room they can't go in (as they can't open doors usually), they will take an airvent and flank you. The game is scary not because of lack of supplies and what not, it's scary because while you have plenty of ammunition and often enough health/armour pickups, you will die because they will kill you. A lot. It requires you to be good to survive, and to be able to move fast and shoot faster. And this is just talking about the normal drones, we ain't even talking about the Predaliens or Praetorians, who are both much more dangerous. Also, facehuggers are instant death, and very hard to see/shoot.

Oh yeah, and also Cry of Fear is decent, if it still relies on the jump scares and gimmicks (like resource starvation) to boost the tension/scare factor.

So I've only recently got back into the horror genre. I played the original Resident Evils on the playstation 2 and gamecube, but starting a youtube channel, I decided to get back into le horrors. Amnesia and Slender are scary, but not the scariest. That honor would probably go to the Penumbra series or the Silent Hill series.

I'd highly suggest playing Clock Tower for the SNES. It's not available in English if

you choose to play it in its original cartridge form - however, if you play it using an emulator, a group of fans have translated the Japanese ROM into English.

I won't spoil the story for you, but basically, it's a 2D side-scrolling point and click adventure where you're trying to find out what happened to your friends and escape said mansion with said friends. But there's a catch - In each room (not hallway) there is a slight chance that Bobby, a maniac killer, will be hiding in them. He isn't always just out in the open; He could be hiding behind a curtain, in a box, etc. If fate has it that you run into Bobby, he'll chase you throughout the mansion until you find another room with something you can hide in/behind. If he catches you, you can knock him down and stun him by mashing either A or B (I forget) otherwise he'll kill you. His spawn points are usually random, but sometimes certain events can trigger him to appear.

Tons of replay value is added to the game when you take in the fact that not only do some important (and a few non-important) rooms and items randomly arrange themselves each play through(items are preset to spawn in only a few different rooms to make it less confusing) but it also has tons of endings which make it more interesting. It's a great game and I'd certainly recommend it.

Amensia and Penumbra are a good games, but when u know the mechanical of this games...the "horror" experience die

Slender, Paranormal (the beta), SCP, and similar games are a continious screamer, so...nope. Unless, of course, you want to die of a heart attack, specially with SCP and his SO HIGH VOLUME in some points.

Silent hill (all games) are a good idea. Alien triology too (even if it's more a shooter than a horror game... like Dead Space), Resident Evil, Siren, Proyect Zero (2, crimsom butterfly are a master piece)...

As stated before "Silent Hill", trust me on this one you won't regret that decision. If I could add another game to this discussion, it would definitely have to be, "The Thing". It not only perfectly recreates the ambiance of the film but it's also able to create this deeper sense of immersion than the source material.

Since you don't have the guts to play Amnesia then I suppose those silly popup scares from the Dead Space series will just have to do.

I've never actually played Resident Evil at all but from the trailers and gameplay I've seen it's rather scary looking so I wouldn't mind advising you to play it.

This might sound out of nowhere but I have to say, Oblivion. Never have I been so scared when exploring caves and ruins in a game. Skyrim has no comparison to the atmosphere of oblivion. It's also a good "first" game because even though you can get scared into jumping and getting kicks. You enjoy it and feel like you make progress. Unlike games like amnesia where you're just scared all the time.

This is going to sound horrible, but hear me out:

Disney's Haunted Mansion videogame (2003)

This game scared me shitless when I was a kid, it has some good gameplay, and who doesn't love being chased by Demons through children's room closets.

This one got me started on horror games. Amnesia and Silent hill are both also extremely good, and I would recommend those for later if you think you wont piss yourself.

Slender? Scary? Please.

I've never really played many horror games, but from reading reviews, Resident Evil is a good series, as well as the Silent Hill series. You could also try Dead Space, I didn't really find it scary, but it is a really awesome game to play.

When it comes to Indie Games, you can choose from a lot. I get a lot of my horror games from PewDiePie, so you could check him out if you want some good scares. Amnesia is suppose to be really good, but I haven't actually played it yet, so I can't say much, and you also said that you don't want to play it, so that's a big no-no.

Also, SCP Containment Breach and SCP-087 are really great fun to play.

I'd say Resident Evil 4 is probably one of the most accesible horror games- not only that, but the gameplay is truly excellent, I'd go with that since you can get it on literally every system now. ;)

Scary is a bit subjective. If you like the FPS genre and don't mind something ancient, try the original Doom. Trust me, it's more frightening than you might think considering its age and the fact that it's as fast-paced and hectic as an FPS can get.

Resident Evil is a standard horror game. It's got suspense, it's got cheap scares, it's got some disgusting things. The first one is more terrifying than any of the sequels. Something about that old mansion just gives me the creeps more than Raccoon City does. I guess it has something to do with being trapped indoors.

  • 3 weeks later...

I recomend this little number from the days of the PS2

Haunting Ground

You play this girl (Fiona) who is stuck in this mysterious and weird castle. You have to get out, but the place is full of horrible secrets and puzzles. You have this German Shepard called Howie to help you, but Fiona herself can die at anytime. One thing I love is that each stage of the game only has one enemy after you (That big dude is just the first). They can't be killed or die until the end of each stage, and a lot of the time you have to run and hide from them (although you can use weapons and set traps).

It's a pretty good game that is sadly overlooked. Check it out!
