I dedicate this artwork to my friend mainly for his birthday, but also because one of his dreams is to hug his favorite pony, Pinkie Pie, so why not also make his OC Razor Edge to receiving a big, sweet, long-lasting hug by Pinkie Pie. I finished it on sunday but I delayed it, so I could present the artwork on the day of his birthday, come on guys, say happy birthday to him!

how I made it:

 

 

I've been working on it for so long, but I took long breaks too, so it's not like it took me THAT long hehe. Made the original one in SAI, then passed it to photoshop and applied a variety of layer effects, filters and color correction both to the characters and the background, I also add the cutier marks separately

finally I know you guys would you say, oh! Motion Spark this is amazing, I already know that. But I have almost none experience in painting, and I would highly appreciate if you guys can give me serious critiques so I can be better in the future. I don't know how to blend colors, and I don't know how to adjust the different brushes, so everything you can say to help me would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks motion spark this was the perfect birthday gift and honestly my birthday just got a million times better. You are simply a great person and never change . I suggest you begin with a curcle for the head of each of the ponies. Pinkie is generally right, but the face isn't rounded correctly (her bottom "lip" is off, which makes her look like she has none) and her head almost seems to large (only very slightly though). The basic body shape and shading of both ponies seems nearly perfect, so I applaud you on that. Also, the ear on your friend's OC is off, if you look at other characters you will see that the ears are a different shape and go slightly off of the head seemingly. One thing that irritates me is that the back of your friend's OC doesn't blend correctly into Pinkie pie as far a shading goes. It makes him appear slightly pasted-on while the rest of the shading seems generally well done. The hair on pinkie is fantastic! However, your friend's OC's tail looks sort of choppy.

 

Sorry If I seem to ahrsh, it's a fantastic peice....but you did ask for criticism.

 

On the bright side....it's a brilliant peice.

Wow, very great piece. Everything looks so neat and orderly. I especially loved your expression for Pinkie Pie. Just suits the character very well and I think this is a nice composition.

I thought that Pinkie's head was round enough XD oh well XD, I agree with the bottom lip, also the shading on her teeth are not deep enough and the shading on her snout as well, I just simply gave up on that because I didn't know what else to do.

Thought I should clarify:

 

It's not really that her head isn't round enough...it's more like it's too oval. It alooks alright in the front, but it's too long in appearance where it moves behind the hair at the top. Sort of reminds me of a mayan (no offence).

Great artwork! I think that was really nice of you to draw the picture for a friend's birthday.Is the lighting effect automated with the software or did you manually create the dramatic lighting?

I really like it! Though you could still use some work with the painting, but everyone knows that practice makes perfect ^^ First of all the shading seems a bit off. It's hard to tell where the light source is coming from, or did you use two? I'd recommend going for one clear light source next time, and to make the shading easier, just pretend the light is gathered in a bucket and you splash it on! Then you can see in your mind where the light would hit the body and where the primary shadows are. (not saying your shading should be splashy, mind you! Just a mindset :3) Also, what really helped me in shading and colours was looking up colour theory and studying that. I like the artwork, but the colours don't seem to match together very well and a bit of knowledge of colour theory can help you with that! That'll also give you insight on shades, because you should remember that shades are never pure black and that lighting is never pure white. A warm, yellow light will give off a cold, blue-ish shade, for example. Stuff like that!

 

I hope I haven't been too harsh, just trying to help ^^ I really like the piece and the poses are splendid!

@@ponywise, I definitelly decide to take your critique Thank you a lot ....wannna know something? I think I reached a moment in my life when I think that I reached peak in terms of art, I feel like my skills are the same and never get better, and the only way to do it, it's like getting some kind of education about it. That may be true or may not, I'm still not sure.

In my opinion the photoshop job made the painting looks much better than the original but still, the mistakes are still there, but I agree with you tho, I shouldn't rely on photoshop like this u_u

when you talked about the colors, let me tell you, I have no idea, like really, no idea, what colors should I use for the shading, I know many artist use a range of different colors for the shading and surprisingly, it looks good, I can't do that

Unfortunatelly for me, is not in my priorities to get paints and canvas and that sort of stuff at the moment, I would prefer to have art education.

@@Flaret, Don't even talk to me about the colors ...the light source was supposed to be the sunset, which we can't see XD ..but yeah, I did my best to put the shading at the opposite side of both ponies bodies, but I guess that I failed. I really should read the color theory thing because I always relied on lighter or darker tones of the same colors, I mixed some "similar" colors but it didn't work ...I aware of all of that, but I was at a point when I thought, I just can't, what I have is not what I wanted but it doesn't look bad either. With critiques aside, I think I did a great job
