something that just...baffles me.

this has been bugging me for quite a while, so i may as well just spit it out.

i don't really see the point of naming baby ponies before they get their cutie mark. like, if scootaloo found a talent that wasn't related to scooters then what's the point of her name? and do parents have some sort of foresight about cutie marks when they name their kids?

i probably worded this weird, so sorry if i sort of confuse you.

To be fair, not everypony have a name that match their cutie mark. (Fluttershy hardly match with butterfly other than the rhythm, Rarity's name doesn't actually means diamond-seeker, Applejack can't really do any jacking (?))

Seems like pony parents simply named their foals based on their distinct appearance traits or personality, cmiiw

Perhaps the parents always have an innate (magic?) ability to name their children precisely as they should be. Obviously there isn't any direct evidence for this claim, but you'd be hard pressed to find a pony with a talent that differs from his/her relative name/cutie mark combination.

That's good observation. that would mean whatever the parents name them could end up their special talent and that's just too cheap. But as a kid's cartoon it's just like that. I mean if you tried watching Dora's Explorer you would be facepalming at how retardingly obvious everything is.

And it's not like every name correlates to their special talent. Fluttershy's name correlates to her personality rather than her talent. But it is strange that neither does their cutie marks correlate with their special talents. Rarity's cutie mark does not correlate with her special talent directly either and neither does Rainbow Dash. I mean diamonds could mean Rarity is a miner, Rainbow Dash's bolt could mean she could of been an electrician. :S

It appears any cutie mark you get while doing a certain activity means you are good at that activity.

Another example: Applebloom. Unless of course she means to construct buildings and clothing out of apples, her name doesn't seem to work.

Applejack can't really do any jacking

WHY, oh WHY did my mind go someplace bad when I read that. I'm a bad bad Pony....

As far as the topic, I think that in many cases they end up with a more family name. Like Applejack is part of the apple family, thus Applejack. All of the apple family names have an apple theme even though Applebloom is shaping up to look like she'll have a non apple themed cutie mark.

-Goes to post topic called: "How do parents know what to call their children?"-

-Sees this thread-

-Freaks out-

Holy shit I was literally JUST about to post this! I've been wondering this for so long. Like how the hell do parents know what to call their children? I mean, look at Rose. She's a florist! How did her parents know what to name her? And Rainbow Dash? Hell, I'd throw in Derpy as well.

<forgive my bad attempt at joke, heheh>

Anyway, there is also a possibility that, even years before they actually got the cutie mark, their special talent is already 'hinted' through their appearances and personality. Parents named their foals based on their looks, and in turn their special talents turns out matched with their appearances.

You do kind of have a point. But: Pretty much everyone in the apple family's names have something to do with apples, so I'd assume Apple Bloom will work on the apple farm.

Scootaloo seems to be multitalented, so I have no idea what her cutie mark would be.

Sweetie Bell, I don't know.

Pumpkin and Poundcake are both children of Mr. And Mrs. Cake, so I'd assume they'd work at Sugarcube Corner.

Sparkle... Magic is sparkly

Pinkie Pie.. cupcakes=pie somehow? and pink is a fun, party-like color

Who says Sweetie Belle's cutie mark is singing?

These are my only possible explanations haha. Maybe Pinkie should have just been a baker, but she just loves cupcakes instead of pies.

Bro, have you even heard "Hush Now, Quiet Now" and "Bab Seed"? In "The Show Stoppers" Applebloom fixes up the treehouse, Scootaloo is good on her scooter, and Sweetie Belle sings.

Also, magic has nothing to do with sparkling.

But the thing is, it takes a while for them to get there cutie marks, so what are you going to call them before than? IT? "So how is your it doing?" "O quite fine, how is your it?" "Doing well." Just doesn't sound just right....

I get what you're saying. Not the naming before cutie marks cus like they said the names and cutie marks dont always match exacctly but they bisically are giving them names for their personalities before they can really start to show.

Yes I have seen them multiple times, and I know Twilight also said something about her singing. But just because they say it doesn't mean that it's her direct cutie mark. That's all I'm saying...

I think Rarity sings really well, and she's a fashion pony who hunts diamonds. : If I pony is good at something they may even be better at something else.

Once again it's just my opinion. Sparkling magic..... When I think of magic I think of glowing sparking aura. That's how it's portrayed a lot in shows and artwork.

Yeah, but rarity is the only pony who's actually been called a good singer, hinting that it's her talent.

Also, cupcakes≠pie and magic≠sparkling.

The following article about Kabalarian Philosophy might explain anything you are currently to have no answer:

"Baby name meanings explained by the Kabalarian Philosophy will be your invaluable guide in choosing the right name for your baby. When your baby is born, you come to the important and vital step of naming your baby. As parents you likely have given thought to naming your newborn after a mother, father, brother, sister, uncle, or aunt. Perhaps you have browsed through lots of baby name books to see which names are currently popular.

However, the very best name for your infant is a "mathematically balanced name," a special name harmonized to your baby's date of birth. The Kabalarian Philosophy, with over 80 years of experience, is the world authority on baby name meanings, balanced names, and their importance in the constructive development of a child's life.

Your newborn, with a balanced name, will be a happy baby-a baby who will develop an intelligent and reasoning mind, with mental depth and stability; be amenable to logic and reason with a greater ability to control emotional reactions throughout the developing years. A balanced name will allow your child to attract the experiences needed to fulfil his or her purpose in life. With your support, your child could excel in school. A balanced name creates an expressive child; one who is creative, reliable, and capable and who will experience overall good health.

Consider the principle of balanced name very carefully before rushing off and making this most important decision for your infant. If you do choose a balanced name, your child will reap the rewards for years to come through a happy, healthy, and successful life. Your ability to know your child's purpose will put you in the driver's seat. You will be able to guide your child toward a worthwhile future filled with the opportunities and experiences needed for happiness. You will have a beautiful unique bond with your youngster and sidestep many misunderstandings that often occur between children and parents.

Taken from Kabalarians.com

So, there are some rather complex and unconcious proccess that defines what you are going to be JUST by choosing a name for your infant.

Interesting, heh?
