Why are they popular?

The Background characters in the show seems to have alot of popularity, but for some of them, I dont know why. I understand Derpy and Vinyl Scratch, but what about...

Lyra?

Bon Bon?

Tom? (Rarity's Rock)

Trixie?

I presume it's because their colour schemes stand out the most. After all, some of these characters don't even talk and are more people than ponies like Mayor Mare. (Whose colour scheme would be considered "boring.") Also, because Lyra and Bon Bon are assumed to be lesbian partners (I think? I don't keep up with fan stuff that much), so people find that fascinating, of course.

Tom is probably due to being perfect material for an internet meme and for being a joke that amuses a lot of people.

As for the background ponies, maybe it's the same reason as Luna: they've gotten so little attention that there's just a massive fanbase for them. I remember reading somewhere about a term for that, but I can't recall. Trixie, on the other hoof, probably got popular due to so many people going against majority opinion and rooting for the "villian."

Lyra and Bon Bon's popularity was originally sparked during the episode Dragonshy, when both characters were seen sitting on a bench in the background. This was the first time that Lyra was shown in her trademark upright sitting position. It was after this point that fan-depictions began taking off, often portraying her as a pony who desired human characteristics such as hands, and other such features.

Bon Bon on the on the other hand, was recognised by the fan base to be associated with Lyra, due to her continuous appearance alongside Lyra as background ponies. Seeing as the brony fandom loves to take little coincidences and speculate and extrapolate them to no end, the fannon idea of Lyra and Bon Bon being partners soon became generally accepted within the community.

Background ponies generally seem to gain popularity due to their seldom, yet impressionable appearances. Due to the lack of background information on such characters, it allows the community to hypothesise about the possible explanations regarding their behaviour, which plainly, is a whole heap of fun.

I think one of the reasons for Trixie being so popular is because she was only two non-recurring characters to get their own episode (the other being Gilda, who's also relatively popular). She showed up, made a huge scene (to the point where no one would forget her), and then left, never to be heard from again. A lot of Trixie-based fanfics cover that topic, as viewers want to know what happened to her once she ran out of town.

Trixie was a featured character. She had a whole episode devoted to her. I would love to see her return for a rematch with Twilight! That would be great! I'd also love to see her actually learn her lesson, and become a series regular. She could still be just as loud and over the top, but actively trying to become a better pony. There could be some really good friendship lessons for her to learn!

Trixie falls under the trope of a "Large Ham" where the actor takes the role and 'goes to town' with it, having a blast and a lot of fun.

'Hammy' Actors are ones who enjoy their role so much that they push the limits of the medium they're in and bring a sort of meta-comedy to their charisma and the performance they do. And as the old addage goes, An animator can act just as hard as their voice actor, so when Kathleen Barr obviously had way too much fun with her role, you, as an audience member typically will have way too much fun watching.

Other examples of Hammy actors or characters would be BRIAN BLESSED, William Shatner, George C. Scott, Captain Falcon, Duffman from The Simpsons, and almost all of the villains from the Disney movies (special mention goes to Percival C. McCleach (Rescuers Down Under), Gaston (Beauty & The Beast), Jafar (Aladdin) and Cruella DeVille (101 Dalmations).

Because Lyra and Bon Bon can sit down, Trixie can run her mouth and the pioneers used to ride these babies for miles (Tom).

Trixie= background character

whaaaaat?

Trixie had line and and I say at least half of the episode was about her, background is just a character they use to make a scene but Trixie had lines and did more than blinking and standing, so Trixie is just like Discord, or something close to that...

Lyra is well known for her sitting position, however I don't see a lot about Bon Bon

Tom is just a rock, that is awesome

Lyra and Bon Bon have a large amount of speaking roles especially compared to the other background characters. They also appear often, and in an area very visible to the audiance.

Tom does not really need to be explained. The line "Here comes Tom!" really automatically boosts him to the top. Plus he rivaled Spike as a love intrest for Rarity.

Trixie appeared as a very over the top dramatic character, that could have many backstories and (to me atleast) has a very appealing color scheme.

Thats what I thought when I heard of her fame...

Oh, and Octavia?

Octavia is just very visually appealing due to her heavy human resemblance. The fact that she is always seen standing on her hind hoofs tend to support that.
