Ok, I'm still pretty new here

but this definetly isn't the first forum I've been on by far

 

People have been msging me asking for advice on drawing, and what not

So I'd like to propose a thread dedicated to Learning to Draw (ponies, humans, portraits)

If you have a question about drawing, want to learn to draw better, or just not sure on how to tackle a pose, than you can post it in here

 

This thread will be used to teach you how to draw from the ground up, what to do, and not to do

Why put this on here?...Well back when i first started drawing I freaking WISH someone did something like this to help me improve, and catch my mistakes

Folks i didn't start drawing "decent" until i was out of Highschool!

 

SO how is this going to work out?

SIMPLE, either you can post a piece here, and ask how to make it better

OR you can ask a question on how something should be tackled

 

Example, lets say "Randy" wants to make himself his own OC Pony, but doesn't want to cheat and use the pony creator, but to actually draw his Pony from Scratch

Well Randy is gonna have to use steps, similar to these

 

Step 1: male or female /Pegasus, Earth Pony, Unicorn, Alicorn

Step 2: find a pose

Step 3: Hair style, Eyes

Step 4: color choices

 

Or maybe our friend Randy wants to learn to draw anime

but he wants to improve on his hair style/ faces/ or maybe over all body anatomy

That's the point in making this thread

 

So if you guys want to learn to draw better, than i can try and help you out

just post your drawings here, and we can help on improvements if any are needed, or if you want your piece to look better

ok, so i used 2 references for this piece

so here is what i ended up doing for this piece of yours

I used the first ref to figure out the head turn

 and position of the left hoof

 

then using the 2nd base ref

I was able to figure out the proper anatomy for the back left leg

as far as pointers go

Go out and USE A REFERENCE it will help you out more than anything else that you could possible do

if you have a reference, than you have a solid point that you can always go back to

That and PRACTICE..a LOT..don't get frustrated and quit, mistakes are gonna happen, thats why we have erasers

 

If you want to improve the most in a short amount of time

than draw with a ball point pen for 6 months

You'll find that if you make a mistake..than guess what, deal with it

after knowing that you can't fix it, you learn not to do it again

but i would only do that for sketches, not stuff you want to color, or planned finish pieces or art

ok here is the difference between a 2d image and a 3d image

your avatar Blue pony is indeed a 2d or flat image

ok this first image is obviously 2d

 

and our fluttershy here is a 3d image

whats the difference..well obviously Fluttershy here has a Light source, and Shading

Oh I see. Yeah, Thank you. That answered my question about the lightning effect.

How about 3d body proportion? Sometimes my drawing just get too small and weird as it goes "further backward". I think I missed the angle. Do you have any tips for that? Maybe by drawing some line to keep the proportion right.

Rainbow Dash is just a Pegasus with a different mane than other ponies

just use a normal skeleton like you would for any pony

add wings

then research the Mane shape

Went back and reworked her a bit more. Something about the left side of her face seems a bit...wonky to me. I can't put my hoof on it... Plus I still need to work on how manes lay around ears.

Every time I try to draw eyes, they always look weird. I only seem to have that problem when drawing on a computer, when I use pencil and paper they look fine. I seem to get tunnel vision whenever I draw on the computer, somehow I can't find mistakes until I take a look at my drawing as a whole. Maybe it's because I tend to zoom in for precision, so I lose sight of the big picture...do you have any advice for this?

 

Here's a sad Chrysalis for reference, I copied the facial expression of Fluttershy from Hurricane Fluttershy. I'm still not satisfied with the eyes and I keep trying to add tears but it always comes out wrong...

The problem with the left side of the face is that the eye is too big. Try pushing the top of the eye down a little. Also, because the eye doesn't follow the same curve as the face it looks like it's bulging out, so I think if you make the edge of the eye the same curve as the edge of the face it should fix that problem.

Hopefully that helps :S

Oh also, you might try making the top of her snout more flat. Like, make it more like a right angle

I admittedly don't know much about this, but wouldn't that sort of thing be more of a personal preference than a set list of good vs. bad?

still not entirely sure what your trying to say exactly

I did post some leg skeletons in here already

until you post an actual picture of what your talking about, than I'm limited in tackling EXACTLY what needs the attention dealt to it

use a cel-phone camera if you have to

The best Drawing Tablets out there are Wacom tablets

I personally have an Intous 5 Large (450$) i believe

you can get them in small, medium, large, extra large

my tablet is about 23" in long, that's bigger than my laptop

 

you can get what's called a Bamboo tablet, and they have 4 different kinds

they go for 80-100$ but are relatively small

 

go to Wacom.com and do your research

The description on their website seems very vague and I have no idea what the differences are between wacom bamboo and intuos besides the price tag.
