I would say out of all of them, Applejack's been the hardest to write material for in my fanfics.  Specifically, the dialogue.  Any of the other ponies and I can usually make up what they say and tweak it slightly to ge the right personality, and almost any line works, but with AJ's accent and personality, she's pretty difficult to write material around.

Unless she's pulling a Carter Grayson (though Rainbow Dash tends to do this more often than AJ, possibly why I find her one of the easiest characters to write).

Honestly, I'd say Rainbow Dash. I feel like she has the most advanced personality. While she is arrogant and narcissistic, she does have a nice side and can look out for others. I think it's hard to find a balance.

In order of most difficult to least.

Rarity:

The most difficult.  You've already explained why.

Rainbow Dash:

Aggressive, but also nice?

Loyal, but arrogant?

Pinkie Pie:

She has her own type of crazy that only some people can copy.

Applejack:

You can't make her too honest to the point of being a jerk.

Twilight Sparkle:

Logical.  Pretty straight forward.

Fluttershy:

Simple.

First of all, let me just say, this is a very interesting topic indeed.  Kudos DashForever, kudos.  :)

Now as for the topic question itself, I'd have to say that I think that Applejack and Fluttershy are the two hardest to write.  I think that AJ is difficult to write in that her character is so consistent in her behavior, that it's sometimes difficult to keep making her interesting for the audience as a whole compared to the rest of the Mane 6, all of whom display erratic behavior or behavior that deviates from their normal behavior far more than she does.

As for Fluttershy, I think that she's difficult to write in that her element, kindness, is actually not always easy to portray as a strength, which is something I touched on in the "Keep Calm and Flutter On" thread earlier today.  As I said there, think about it; until this latest episode, I don't think that any Fluttershy episode's lesson ever revolved around Fluttershy's kindness as a strength.  Rather, most of them have relied on focusing on Fluttershy overcoming her weaknesses, such as her insecurity, shyness, etc.  But, if you really think about it, none of HER episodes have really focused on Fluttershy utilizing kindness to solve a problem, and I think it's largely that kindness, the central aspect of her character really, is sometimes hard to convey as a strength.  Heck, another piece of evidence reinforcing the idea that Fluttershy is one of the more difficult characters to write for would be that when she's written as a supporting character, given her quiet nature, she can, unless given A LOT of lines, pretty easily just fade into the background.  So, even though I'm split on AJ and Fluttershy, I'll have to go ultimately with Fluttershy on this one.  I just think that she's a somewhat surprisingly difficult character to write, and it's one reason that I think that "Keep Calm and Flutter On" might be the best Fluttershy episode yet, in that, rather than focusing on Fluttershy overcoming a weakness of hers, it focused on her utilizing her greatest strength to solve a problem.

Rarity- Too ... Elegant for me. I like Rarity, but sometimes her over the top dramatic drama queen thingy that she does... its just too hard. it's hard to be a fashionable but nice diva, but try to stay interesting.

Rainbow Dash- its easy for me to do the 'coolness' 'tomboy' thingy, but its hard to act cool and sometimes careless without becoming an unlikeable character.

I really don't think any are, it starts off with in idea. And Then if you know the character and what they are like It's hands down easy.Connecting your ideas to the character is a hard task as well as making it entertaining for the reader. All In all I just a matter of creativity :)

Oh... Rainbow is kinda difficult for me since she has this tomboyish attitude that includes that mix of kindness. I've wrote characters similar to her tomboy side, but they were just complete brutes. So trying to write a tomboy that's kind in a way is quite hard :\

I nominate Applejack.  While she's good hearted and mature, that kind of character is hard to write for because she's so toned down.  I mean, her only major flaw is her pride, and you can only mine that particular flaw so many times before repeating yourself.  That's why I think she got such little focus in Season 2.

But at the same time, that quality makes her a great character to play others off of, like in Sisterhooves Social.

I wouldn't say that. She has a big fear of failure/disappointment (Applebuck Season, The Last Roundup, Apple Family Reunion), is stubborn (Applebuck Season and Apple Family Reunion), and has a general tendency to hide and ignore her problems.

Definitely Applejack, by far. Half of the writers don't even know what to do with her. They finished her all the way back in Episode 4 of Season 1. See, the latest episode? That has such a similar plot to Applebuck Season that I don't even--

Yes. There's a reason why she has the least episodes and character development. Even during my short time as a fanfic writer, she was the hardest to write.

I was going to say Applejack because of that damned accent. I keep forgetting that I need to include that in her dialogue for some reason...

Yes but all of that is, at its basis, pride, just showing in slightly different forms.  She's too proud to get help, she's too proud to face failure, and she's too proud to deal with her problems directly.
