My Analysis of Pony Personalities + Assessment (Covering 23 Characters)

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I’ve been observing and analyzing the different personalities of characters from My Little Pony and thought of sharing them here. I’m deeply interested in typology, personality all which a branch from Psychology and am still in the process of learning more about the enneagram. The descriptions and information that are posted here are gathered from Fauvres, Enneagram Institute Discussion Board (http://personalitycafe.com/enneagram-personality-theory-forum/73452-27-tritype-archetype-descriptions.html).

Do note that I am not the author of the aforementioned website, and that I am merely forwarding much gathered information from the site mentioned. Special thanks to Madhatter for compiling the 27 Tritype/Archetype descriptions. I have also included a way to find one’s tritype and main enneagram type at the bottom of the different descriptions, do try it out if you may :)

Without further ado, let’s begin.

Now I know a number of you are going to be skeptical, and so to reassure your doubts on their types as with their description, I've provided that description (found in the link above) here of Twilight Sparkle's Tritype.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twilight Sparkle, 136 – The Taskmaster Archetype

Full Descriptions:

The 136/361/613 is an incredibly discerning, focused and responsible type. She said they will be the most inclined to want to live up to a successful image by societal standards and to focus on duty in order to feel valuable. She called it the "true taskmaster" that is inclined to create structure and rules that others in society can follow and to implement them. She said the blindspot is that one can be so overly focused on the rules that they can lose touch with their own values and feelings in deference to what is acceptable or societally defined. This is the type at risk of becoming robotic (along with the 135/351/513). However the 135/351/513 is less relational than the 136/361/613.

I was asked the differences between the 361, the 368 and the 369 tritypes. Since the question is which gut type is dominant. At a glance, it is most helpful to look at activity levels. The 361 is very industrious and busy doing to avoid anxiety, the 1 brings a need to do what is morally correct. The 368 is focused on fighting for justice, the 8 brings a need to overcome and prevail. The 369 is highly adaptable and focused on being in comfortable alignment with others.

I am not 100% sure at this time but for now I am thinking 613 with 6 being very much in charge.
I am a goal-oriented person who doesn't like being controlled by others..I am a friendly person. Sometimes, I come across as too mild/passive..I see it when people think they can control me. They are often surprised when they see I don't let myself get pushed so easily. Being a phobic Six makes it hard for me to truly stand up to someone though often and I end up relying on an "avoidance strategy".
I focus mostly on competence/technical knowledge to get ahead in life so I don't go out of my way to manipulate/mobilize others.

136 tritype; elegant, stoic and resolute with a loyal professional veneer.

(3)-6-1 - The Compliant 3
3-(6)-1 - The Competent 6
3-6-(1) - The Normative 1

Very self critical. Strong ideas about how they should act and have man guidelines that they must follow and cannot deter from.

1-3-6 : this One is usually very hard-working and well-organized. Dutiful and diligent, they also keep an eye on their own interests and like to receive prizes and praise and boost their reputation among their peers. They prefer a leading role and can be excellent managers and leaders: they can get things done as they’re efficient, more pragmatic and also more cautious and calculated. They can sometimes suffer from a bit of paranoia, and worry about their status, finances or health.
Usual subtypes: social, 1w9
similar tritypes: 3-1-6, 1-6-3
flavors: hard-working, pragmatic, efficient and cautious

1-6-3 : conscientious, responsible, cautious and efficient, these Ones are very practical and productive. They’re down-to-earth, realistic and typically good managers of people and resources. They’re also quite good at predicting and avoiding possible pit-falls and are talented trouble-shooters: they’re preventive and like to play it safe. Want their hard-work and thoroughness praised and (financially) rewarded, and sometimes they might act arrogantly and engage in self-praising when they feel unappreciated.
usual subtypes: social, self-preserving, 1w2
similar tritypes: 1-3-6, 6-1-3
flavours: efficient, practical, cautious and hard-working

136 Compliance meets Harmony and meets Competence.

The 136 is focused on the rules.... it is an important point but they really, really task and are always busy.

631--A 6 with a strong superego. Lots of issues regarding personal competency. At lower health, the most likely of the 6s to respond negatively and reactively to pressure from others, since there is already a nearly unbearable pressure from within.
--The first impression I get from this tritype is a strong image orientation. There's a constant need to impress others and to have a positive place in the social sphere. I see a need for perfection in all things, partly out of ego and partly out of duty. There's strong loyalty to causes, but more so community ones and not personal ones. But this is a very hands-on tritype who will work to achieve what (s)he wants to achieve. I see less manipulation here than the 3 might otherwise indicate, and more focus and drive.
--That doesn't ring true for me ( I have this tritype ). Duty to those worthy of it, yes, but I don't find "societal standards" to be high standards at all, or worth emulating in the slightest. I find that most of "society" sorely disappoints the lowest common denominator rules. I also have a deep distrust for the public in general.

So, the 136, 137 and 126 would most focus on preparing, being busy and responsible. The 1 and 6 feel they must be responsible, the 3s must do, achieve, and perform, the 4s must accomplish, the 8s must executing and so on.

I have found the 136 needs to be busy to avoid feelings of anxiety …136s can enjoy needle point, baking, cleaning, organizing and/or reading to keep the anxiety at bay.

[by timeless:] 6-1-3. That means they have the core desires of a 6, they interact with the world like a 1 and they like to be seen like a 3 would like to be seen. Breaking that down:
Type 6 is security-oriented, and can alternate between serious doubt and serious loyalty. They tend to be pretty rule-focused right off the bat (as they are a superego type) but then add 1 onto the mix and, like that tri-type description gives you, they can get fixated on constructing appropriate rules. Type 1 is usually critical of themselves and others, which is the component that enables a Type 6 to channel their desire for a workable rule set into the desire to create a workable rule set. Type 3, the image type in this triad, likes to be seen as successful and effective. You can see how adding 6, 1 and 3 together would create a personality type that's dedicated toward seeking out the best rule set.

613 The Taskmaster. Discerning and focused 6. This is the most industrious 6. Eager beavers and highly responsible, they are always busy and can be mistaken for 3s. Fear is managed by achieving. They tend to feel the burden of obligation. They focus on duty and family.

The core fears are of fear itself, danger, being alone, cowardice, submitting, deviance, uncertainty, being targeted, chaos, being wrong, bad, evil, angry, inappropriate, corruptible, condemned, failure, being incapable, or unable to do, inefficient, immutable, and inconsequential.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: I could also place the description of all the different character tritypes instead of providing the link above (do comment on it if so - I am at doubts too) though my reasoning on why not is simply because the descriptions of all the characters are long as you can see but accurate.

I have also come up with a means to finding one's tritype. The assessment is based on the enneagram or RHETI, but I have come up with one that is much quicker and accurate (yet to see mistakes) assessment. Without further ado...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RHETI Tritype Assessment

A much quicker assessment, three questions. Heart, Head, Gut.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question 1: Heart

Note: Of the three types seen below, which is more fitting of you?

  • Type 2 is generous, demonstrative, people-pleasing, and possessive.
(Supportive, involved, concerned, committed, interactive, people-oriented)

  • Type 3 is adaptable, excelling, driven, and image-conscious.
(Busy, practical, Type A, aspiring, competitive, adaptive, task-oriented)

  • Type 4 is expressive, dramatic, self-absorbed, and temperamental.
(Sensitive, aesthetic, intense, deep, creative, original, meaning-oriented)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question 2: Head

Note: Of the three types seen below, which is more fitting of you?

  • Type 5 is perceptive, innovative, secretive, and isolated.
(Shy, detached, ingenious, reflective, private, innovative, knowledge-oriented)

  • Type 6 is engaging, responsible, anxious, and suspicious.
(Cautious, ambivalent, skeptical, sensing, anxious, equivocating, safety-oriented)

  • Type 7 is spontaneous, versatile, acquisitive, and scattered.
(Curious, fun-loving, restless, shifting, entrepreneurial, stimulation-oriented)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question 3: Gut

Note: Of the three types seen below, which is more fitting of you?

  • Type 1 is principled, purposeful, self-controlled, and perfectionistic.
(Careful, conscientious, serious, single pointed, idealizing, values-oriented)

  • Type 8 is self-confident, decisive, willful, and confrontational.
(Strong, assured, masterful, grounded, frank, magnetic, power-oriented)

  • Type 9 is receptive, reassuring, complacent, and resigned.
(Kind, unassuming, imaginative, open, accepting, fair, nature-oriented)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Results:
Place these three types beside each other (Eg: 459, 125, 368 etc)
And you have your Tritype.

EDIT: The order of the tritypes does not matter, though it would be preferable from
smallest to largest. Thanks SilverHeart :)

So if I were to do this assessment I would find my tritype? I worked it out and found that I am a 135. I'm placing all of my guessing power into this and saying that I am a reserved perfectionist if I had done this correctly.

135 – The Technical Expert Archetype

Yep, yep, the 1 makes you a perfectionist, 3 driven and the 5 instead of a 6 detached. Type 6 peeps are after security, often with a comfort or company of friends, a near Twilight Sparkle at that :D

So how do you determine the order the numbers go in? I determined I've got the traits of a 2, 5, and 1. So I determine what I am by looking at the descriptions of the ordered types or do I do something else?

I think I forget to add that the order of the numbers does not matter, though preferably from the smallest to the largest. So in your case, your tritype would be 125 – The Mentor Archetype. You share Princess Celestia's tritype :P

I'm kinda confused. Apparently I'm a type 6, "The Loyal Skeptic", and my trifix is 6w5, 1w9, 2w1. So does that make 6-1-2, which then goes to 126?

If so, then... I'm Spike! n.n

After taking the test I got 479. The "Gentle Spirit" archetype.

Strangely enough, the "Gentle Spirit" archetype is tied to Discord, who is a villain.

Ehehe, the tittle's fitting right - the Gentle Spirit, Discord lol. He was a hard one to analyze, I've managed to pin in his 9, lack of awarness when the mane 6 became a real threat (and procrastination which we seem to share), rarely showing his anger too. His 7 being his randomness and that leaves 2/3/4 which I had a problem initially pinpointing out. He's not in it for people (as so as to regard their opinons or emotions) so 2 is definitely out, not in it for a crowd or to showcase something extravagent or out of desire like a 3... so that leaves 4....creativity and authencity.

*Assuming* I did this correct, I am a 279? ... While I'm not positive I did this the correct way, it wouldn't surprise me if I did... when I looked back at the characters and what they are... I match Pinkie Pie perfectly, and Fluttershy 2 out of 3 (269)... That sounds about right to me since everyone that knows me and knows MLP always tells me I'm about 70% Pinkie Pie and 30% FlutterShy... or maybe 60/40.. depends on who you talk to... Even more ironic was I debated back and forth for a couple minutes between 6 and 7 before finally deciding that 7 was -more- like me.

Since I was able to identify with both a 279 and a 269 I decided to read the results on both of these... my exact expression multiple times was -- !!! :o!! oh my goodness!! ^_^  !! ;x -- It is insane how properly and perfectly a test that has no clue who I am, what I've been through to make me the person I am, etc. can define me. I'm just in amazement right now lol.

Anyways, so it was really cool to see how that worked out! Thanks for sharing this with us. It's really awesome   ^_^

It's kind of freaky that in spite of how different everyone thinks they are from everyone else.. we can all still for the most part be summed up into groups huh? Very interesting!

I'm glad you enjoyed it as well :)

We may well be different from one another, but all of us have something in common in that we go through the process of life, of growth and learning. It is there that similar traits emerge regardless of one's personal or individual differences. We can only 'catch' or rather observe such traits. Much exist about us that we still do not know, counting too that these personality assessments can only go so deep.

First of all, thanks for putting this up, I was just sitting here bored trawling the forums. This was a fun little thing to do to pass the time.

Secondly, I match Discord perfectly :P

Just stop for a moment to take it all in. You are alive. You are free and the world would be far less grand without you in it.

You matter.

Omigoshomigoshomigosh... I love personality theory. And while I've seen plenty of threads around the interwebs on MBTI, I was very pleasantly surprised to see the enneagram here.  (My full enneagram triype is 6w7, 3w2, 9w1 sp/so by the way, and if you understood that, congratulations, you are just as much of a personality theory nerd as I am!)

I regard Tritype theory as fun but less important than the individual types. My favorite source is this site, as it puts the focus on flaws, which is where enneagram truly shines. My personal, tentative typings are as follows:

Twilight: Either Type 1 or Type 6w5. If you are wondering what the "w5" and stuff mean, that is known as a "wing". Each enneagram type shares some influences with the types directly beside it according to this theory. If one of those sides is a more dominant influence on the type than the other, then it forms a wing. I, for example, am an enneagram type 6, but I also share the fears of a type 7, making me 6w7. If you like this theory, you can take it, if you feel like it trivializes it, you can leave it. Non essential.

Applejack: Type 1w2

Pinkie Pie: Type 7

Rainbow Dash: Type 7 or Type 3, depends on the episode.

Rarity: Type 3.

Fluttershy: Definite Type 2

It's good to see another who's interested in typology :D. I'm into MBTI as well but I find it a wee unstable, the core mechanics of the inventory is there but without have a clear linkage to the cognitive functions shown to the public as with numerous assessments with results of type percentage; it confuses the public who wished for a breif summary on it. In other words people think they are boderline intp or infp for example where this should not exist to begin with, you're either this or that because one's cog. fuction stay the same regardless of one's so call 'percentage'.

The inventory showed one's type on a shallow level, it gave a brief summary which is good but generally ignores the much important cognititve fuctions which I feel, is the 'deeper part of the iceberg'.

I love the MBTI despite so, it gave different contrasts of each cognitive function and how they relate to each other. Fi and Te, Fe and Ti, Si and Ne, Se and Ni. The MBTI showed how one's strength can be a weakness, how our personalities may lead on to conflict and why so, even so the jungian shadow which I'm vastly interested in, both collective and individual. They are an eye-opener in general, a beacon of hope to which I see for in humanity as a whole, as a way to get to know themselves better as well as to get to know others and how they relate to them.

Much like I suppose the cutie marks of MLP, the assestments uncover one's being, perhaps not his or her purpose, or what he or she will do in life, but perhaps as a means of support to get one there. Hidden in being, time makes do our perception of others, and certainly we will learn of them and life but not all in care and support one would wish.

Anyway, I still feel the enneagram tritype a better means to type others than so the MBTI. There's a certain pattern for the both of them, but I feel the enneagram is much faster in doing so. Having to depend on cognitive functions to type others itself take time, though I feel much longer than so to speak. As for the analysis you made, I've no quaints about it though I suspect a few characters not as they are.

  • Applejack, I feel is a type 8 instead of a type 1. I find her frank, down-to-earth and while principled as may be seen. She has nothing to hide from others and is quick to action as than a type 1 whom would lay down plans or handle such a problem carefully.

  • Rarity, I feel is a type 4 instead of a 3. While she is after a crowd, she is after a 'certain' selected crowd - the canterlot elite. She also is temperamental and dramatic which is add odds with a type 3 who would cover his/her emotions and try again, determined than ever.

  • Cadance 269
  • Shining Armor 368

Cadance isnt on the list but do ya think ya know her "code?" She's lovely, and she can make love everywhere wher she comes, so lovely she really is

Yep, I've done just that. Cadance cares for her fellow ponies, very generous towards them, giving or protecting the crystal empire for example despite being very tired - type 2; she's very committed and faithful towards friends and families, compassionate towards others and her need for security, coming alongside Shining and her friends - type 6, receptive and open lastly like a type 9; thus her tritype is 269. Cadance interestingly shares the same tritype alongside Sweetie Belle and Fluttershy. I've also included Shining Armor who shares the same tritype with Applejack.

  • 1 year later...

I figured I would take a shot at the characters.. some of the ones above I disagree with or can't really make a good judgment (since personality isn't developed enough).

Twilight: Agree!! Main type being 6w5!!

Applejack: 368 could work, but honestly I could also see 369. 9s can be incredibly stubborn. Applejack is brutally honest, but she doesn't strike me as being confrontational or power-seeking.. if anything she often seems to be one of the more agreeable ponies of the Mane Six. If her gut fix is 8, it's 8w9 not 8w7. Also, I think her main type is 6w7.. especially when you look at episodes like "Apple Family Reunion" and "Somepony to Watch Over Me".. typical 6w7 overreactions.

Rainbow Dash: Agree, main type being 7w6! Counterphobic 6w7 is also a possibility though, I'll admit.. but RD's ego is way too out in the open..even when she isn't facing some sort of fear- with a cp 6, you only see that approach when the person thinks he or she has a fear to overcome.

Rarity: Not a 4 fix!! Rarity is a classic 3 fix and probably has that for her main type. Rarity is far too eager to be impressive/successful in the eyes of others. A 4 is moreso that kind who is in love with his/her self image that nothing can take that away. Rarity is a lot more adaptable. I think 3w4 is her main type. I agree with 1 and 6 fixes, making her a 136.

Pinkie Pie: YES YES YES!!! 279!!! Without a doubt!! 7w6 as the main type.

Fluttershy: Indeed.. sweet Fluttershy is perfect as 269.. 9w1 as the main type.

Trixie: I see 378 moreso than 478.. 3 fix over 4 fix for similar reasons as Rarity. Except Trixie might actually be an 8w7 rather than a core 3 (as seen in "Magic Duel")

Celestia: 125 works. I feel like Celestia's personality hasn't been developed enough to be sure- but that seems right given her role as Twilight's mentor. Simultaneously stern and playful... deserving of her power and private. I think her core type would be 2w1.

Luna/Nightmare Moon: 468 works when the show actually decides to give Luna some character.. "Luna Eclipsed", "Friendship is Magic", "For Whom The Sweetie Belle Toils", "Sleepless in Ponyville". Luna is likely a 4w3.

Spike: 126? I don't think so. He's more likely to be a 269 with 6w7 as the core type. Spike is very malleable and doesn't show particularly strong convictions as you would see in a 1 or a 1-fix.. compare Spike to characters like Twilight and Rarity or Harshwhinny.

Apple Bloom: 137 could work I guess... I dunno.. I was actually thinking 379, but I guess 1-fixed kids can still have a carefree attitude towards life. Apple Bloom does take on the role as leader of her group while Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo are more passive.. and more 9-fix like. I would say Apple Bloom's core type is 3w2.

Sweetie Belle: 269? Yes, perfect! Not quite as passive as Fluttershy, but still has that sweet persona (or Is it pony-sona?). I'd say she's a 6w7 or a 9w1 prone to petulance.

Scootaloo: 369. This works really well for Scoots. She's ambitious and has role models who she emulates greatly. She's the one I'm most confident about being triple-harmony. She's also most likely a 6w7.

Diamond Tiara: 378. I hate her so much.. but yeah, that works.. triple aggressive, triple asshole. She's an 8w7 bully.

Silver Spoon: 268, it's kinda hard to tell with her being DT's lackey, but I was thinking 368 actually. Probably a 6w7.

Chrysalis: 358, hmmmm... I guess I could see how that would work. She seems like a 3w4 to me.

Discord: 479, yep! This explains a lot about Discord actually and his actions.. I would say he's a 7w6.

Octavia: 146, on the show, she's a background pony with no lines... but from the fan art, I would say this is most likely Octavia's tritype. Somewhat serious with a dramatic edge. Probably a 1w9.

Vinyl Scratch: 279, on the show, she's a background pony with no lines.. but from the fan art, I would say this is most likely Vinyl's tritype. A triple-positive type like Pinkie Pie. Probably a 7w8.

Zecora: 259, yes this works. This is the tritype most likely to have pride in not having an ego. She's grounded, reclusive, and knowledgeable. Perhaps a 5w6?

Lightning Dust: 378 works. A lot of comparisons are made between her and Rainbow Dash. Lightning Dust is more ruthless than RD ever was.. which comes from the 8-fix which can't "not give a shit" like Rainbow Dash.

Cadance: 269, not particularly developed on the show [i heard the comics do a better job with her].. but this seems to work. On the show, she seems like a 2w1/2w3.

Shining Armor: 368? I don't really see the 8 in him. He seems more like a 1 to me... kind of guided more by reason than gut. He also seems very dutiful. I would say he's a 136 like Twilight with 3w2 as the main type.

As for other characters!!!
Bon-Bon: 136 with 6w5 as main type [largely based off my fanfics and from what I've seen otherwise.. but my fics give her more of a 3-ish side.. a fiery sense of ambition.. however, while based on typical fan art.. 126 seems to be the better fit.]

Lyra: 279 with 9w1 as main type [yet again, largely based off my fanfics.. that's what she's kind of like in the fan art too.. except "Anthropology" makes her more 5-like than 7-like..]

Maud Pie: 459 with 5w6 as the main type. She's your classic triple-withdrawn type.. doesn't express herself to the world around her, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to her on the inside. What makes Maud such an awesome character is that she is so different than any of the Mane Six.

Tirek: 358 with 8w7 as the main type. Classic power-hungry villain with lofty ambitions. He's the best villain this show has produced so far. No sense of loyalty given the way he turned on Discord.

Cheese Sandwich: 379 with 7w6 as the main type.. a lot of similarities to Pinkie, but I'm giving Cheese the 3w2 fix rather than Pinkie's 2w3 fix. Cheese is more into showing the world how great of a party pony he is and has loner streak, while Pinkie isn't focused on how she comes across to others. A good example of how 3-fixed 7s can be different than 2-fixed 7s.

Ms. Harshwhinny: 126, she's your classic triple-compliant type.. stern and meticulous without a desire to make herself the "star of the show".  Her main type is 1w9.

Big McIntosh: 269, the strong nice guy type. Easygoing and helpful to those around him, I would say he's a 9w1 like Fluttershy.

Granny Smith: 379 seems about right for her.. but have to see more of what she was like when she was younger since they are clearly playing on the "kooky old lady who tells tall tales" stereotype. I would say core 7w6. It's really hard to say to be honest...

Flim Flam Brothers: 379, image-conscious, ambitious, adaptable, and entertaining.. yea that seems about right. 3w2 as core type for both Flim and Flam. Your "con-artist" type.

Iron Will: 378. Triple-aggressive. He's an 8w7 who has a powerful presence. The sort of type you don't see often in Ponyville and a better representation of his tritype than that 2-D personality sociopath Diamond Tiara.

Cranky Doodle Donkey: 269 with 6w5 as a tritype, a seemingly curmudgeonly character with a sad story. His remarks to Pinkie are classic 6w5 and I'd say 2/9 fixes.

As of now, I can't think of anypony else who has a typable personality.. but those are my thoughts!
