writing I Am Not Well (poem)

I wanted to write a new poem today, but family issues kept me busy with other things. I decided to post an old one instead.  I'm beginning my second semester of university in two or three days so I thought it would be fitting to post a poem I wrote around the beginning of last semester. Unfortunately, it is a sad one. :( As always, your comments, suggestions, etc. are very greatly appreciated. :)

"I Am Not Well"

A pounding headache,
At ten-forty at night,
Echos the bass from
The room to the right.
Upon my shelves
Books, papers, and assignments do pile.
I have so much,
But they're not due for a while.
My dorm is as empty,
As my mind and my belly;
With nine meals a week
And no company.
I am as lonely
As a man on an island.
All my friends are at home.
Meanwhile, I am
Stuck here
In my own, cold-burning hell.
So, as you may have noticed,
I am not well.

I remember my brother going to university and by the second year's end he was so sick of school. He was majoring in english and still had two years to go. Although he went to local university and didn't have the dorm life his feelings were pretty much the same. I asked why he was even studying english anyways and it was cause he liked to read. Fair enough i told him but if it's not fun anymore it's obviously not the best path for him. He still went the two years and got his degree. It hasn't gotten him anything. Everything he's pursued didn't require the degree. *shrug*

That's exactly what I'm afraid of :(. As a result, I've been treating choosing a major like walking through a mine field. I don't want to live in a way that doesn't make me happy, but the things I like won't be able to get me a job in the future, most likely. It's all so confusing and frustrating   Things have gotten a bit better at school since when I wrote this poem, so at least I have that. :)

Oh, and thanks again for that song you wrote for me. I appreciate it so much!
