The Running thread

My favorite running story is from Cross Countery training, although I never actually made Varsity. In high school, I was running with a group of friends up a mountain. 3 miles up, it starts raining so we turn around. It quickly turns into a very heavy thunderstorm and we are soaked. Despite being covered by water, I was thirsty because we had been running for a while. I remember pulling my shirt up and sucking the rainwater from it. My shoes felt terrible and my clothes were very uncomfortable but I'm actually pretty glad I had that experience.

haha that's an awesome story, myy team and I went on a run and it started raining, me and the team started singing "its raining men" it was a good day :)

I've got a rain story! The winter training group I led was going for a long run through town when it started raining one of those huge northwest rainstorms. Naturally, the team stripped down to our short shorts and showed the town our pasty white and lack of muscles. Then we found a clogged drain that had created a massive puddle, so we started doing push-ups in the water. It was a great day.

Then we all got colds.  :(

My mom is a marathon runner. I don't run. I just don't see what's so appealing about it. Can someone here please explain to me why so many people enjoy it?

It's a simple form of exercise that everyone can do. It doesn't require any equipment or courts or fields or even a group. As long as you have shoes, you can go for a run.

Also, there's nothing quite like running through the desert and hoping random loops of rusty barbed wire while encouraging your team to not give up.

well I like running for two main reasons, one is personal, and the other is the feeling.

Before I started running, I only did wrestling. my family is huge on the sport, and my brothers are both really good. I felt like I was under there shadow all the time. one kid on the cross country team told me that I would be a good runner. I tried it to se what was good about it and I immediately fell in love with it.

I like running because of the freedom I get from it, I can clear my head and relax and not have to worry about anything in the world for that time period. that's why I like running.

I can't relax while running. It's somewhat difficult to relax when you can't breathe.

Running? Desert? How do you not burst into flames?

The desert was at an elevation of around 9,000 feet.   So it was actually a little chilly. And anyway, to start that run we had to climb up a small glacier.

A month ago I would have completely agreed with you, I thought running was stupid and I wondered why would anyone do something that made you feel like you were about to die (and not in a good way) and call it fun. Every time I had to run to warm up for a sport I wanted to die. Doing laps around the gym was a fate worse than death.

Just a couple weeks ago I decided I needed to start running so I can stay in shape and I discovered it really wasn't that bad. I've found all the things that make running seem less like death to me: colder weather (especially snow), darkness (early morning or at night), and my pop/hiphop power workout radio station on Pandora. I also got the little Nike+ running app for my phone so it can track my runs and times, and being able to visually see progress is a good motivator. I've found that running with all these things have made it easier to get used to so I can slowly be able to work up to running faster, longer, and in any conditions.

My times are awful so I'm not even going to post them, and I can't run more than a few miles. But I discovered that running is something I enjoy when I had been assuming it was so awful for so long, and I look forward to tracking my progress and improving my times.

Sounds like you do a lot with your team. That's pretty awesome. I can't do that though, since running's kinda dead in my city, especially long distance running. Desert sounds like fun. I love hot weather.

In other news, I feel kinda terrible since it's Winter and I haven't even ran more than 12 miles since November after the marathon. The summer kinda forces me to run, since I love the heat, and the sun. The Winter has neither, which really, really sucks. Anyone else feel that way?

yea, I haven't done a lot of running since December :( I have tried and failed miserably, so im hoping ill be able to before track season starts

Yeah, our team is one big family. I know that's cliche, but we are really close-knit and supportive of each other, both in running and in our other interests. That's a great way to keep running: find a group. I don't run when other people aren't running with me; when they run, I feel obligated to join them.

Ask some of your friends if they want to start running one day a week. After a while, bump it up to two or three...then keep going until you're running every day. Then enter some Fun Runs and kick butt.

I used to run like the wind just like you but then I took a lack of motivation to the knee...

Me when running about 12-13 km/h (not really fast I know)

1000m - hey this is quite easy

1500m - I'm breathing heavily now

1750m - Must... not give up...

2000m - My abdomen hurts...

2250m - I'm sweating so much and my abdomen hurts even more

2500m - fuck this shit, I'm going home...!

haha well, at least you run, its cool that you like to get out and run!i like the lack of motivation joke, im really unmotivated, if I wasn't in track and stuff I probably wouldnt run that much

Well, if you struggled to not give up at 1.7k, but then you kept going for an extra 0.8k, that's pretty cool, right? You should try running on a track.

Mandatory bump, since this thread doesn't seem to be breathing right now.

Just ran 10 miles for the first time in 3/4 months. I actually found it kinda hard, since my legs haven't really done any work at all since I took  so much time off. Still felt just awesome though. Great start to a March break.

Take a look outside. If it's all sunny-like, then now's a good time to start running again. :)

YEEEEAH TRACK! This season is gonna be awesome. derpy_emoticon1.png

We just had our first "ice-breaker" meet last week. I missed my PR for my 1,500m by three-tenths of a second. But coming into the season, after being out for weeks, with THAT TIME is awesome.

Then I was the first leg of our JV 4x400m. I ended up running the fastest 400-split (54.7 seconds) of all of our school's 4x4 teams, including all of the Varsity. img-387689-1-5e7kmu.png

So now my friend thinks that I can help break the long-standing Distance Medley Relay record. He said if I could run a 54 or better for the 400, he could easily get under 4:50 for the mile, then our other two runners for the 1,200 and the 800 only need to run at or around their PRs and we have the record in the bag.

Yeah, good season. mellow.png

Running was the bane of my existence back in P.E. class. Having to run laps around the track was always a chore for me.

I'll keep an open mind about it, though. I'm sure if I became physically fit, and learned how to run properly, I might very well find it to be an enjoyable activity. I already do know that I enjoy walking and biking.

Ah when I was a kid, I loved to run! I ran in track for my school for a year or so. did a really good job too and I was in the long jump too! I loved them soo much! then I got older.. did some drugs and drink a lot... didn't really help me so.

But I got clean! don't drink as much, and now I'm back to running. Sure I only do it once a week and it for 2hours but still I'm getting back in to it and I have never been happier! :)

I'm currently being looked at by some colleges! They want me to run on their cross-country teams. :D I could even run on the team at my dream school, so I'm pretty happy. In other news, I missed out on going to Junior Olympic Nationals this year because I got really sick. So that kinda sucks, but whatever.
