I'm not talking about the alicorn thing, but I want the old Twilight back

Everything hinges on the writers and their goals and I agree with those that say the writers are walking a tightrope. Keeping the show simple for kids but having enough depth for teens/adults. I also feel that having Twilight not loose her rough edges, not grow, would be an even bigger mistake. Celestia sent her to Ponyville to grow up and stop hiding behind her books. Her personality is much deeper than being a cynic and a smartass and we are seeing the true her now. I agree that her adorkable nature made her fun but I think it's still there. I think she is actively trying to control her scarcasm and if you notice her friends (it seems) didn't take the bait or even notice the scarcasm. People would set her off but she rarely set them off and I can only think of one time and that was during Winter Wrap Up when she, out of desperation, used magic and pissed off AJ. The other mane 5 seem much more conflict prone towards each other. Scarcasm is a part of her but I think it was a sign of being immature more than a true part of her. I agree it's fun to watch but is very one dimensional and if we truly love the show we must allow it to develop and grow. It's a bit trite, and over used, but change is hard. We all know that but it makes the show so real and textured. My 2 cents.

I don't think the old Twilight is completely gone, just more controlled and mature.  I'm sure Twi's sarcasm and adorkableness hasn't vanished and season 4 will have plenty of opportunities for this side to come out again.  I'd love to see some of her sarcasm used on the high society ponies I'm sure she'd have to deal with as a princess.

Tis true, Twilight has grown complacent during her time in Ponyville. Her personality is less volatile now.

Hopefully the stress a being a princess brings back some of her sarcastic tendencies.

I'll have to admit I almost judged this for the alicorn thing, then jumped to the report button to report it 'cause I thought it was in the wrong section. :P

Thankfully, I pay attention.

I can agree with that, really. I found the social awkwardness easier to connect to, and nowadays Twilight has gone beneath Rainbow Dash in my favorite characters' list. And I used to really dislike Rainbow Dash, but she got some good development with Wonderbolts Academy and that one Scootaloo episode. I don't mind the fact that she became less awkward and learned more about friendship though. This change itself should be a sign of consistency and character development on the show. However, I think the change was kind of done a bit incorrectly in my opinion. Twilight just became, at least to me, more boring and generic like many main characters are in media. She became more of a boring and generic heroine with little traits to set her apart from the far more interesting ponies around her.

They could've had her learn more about friendship, but kept some of her biting sarcasm and cynicism. Or maybe established new traits that would come to light as she became more of a well-rounded individual. As it stands, she's my least favorite of the Mane Six, just because she seems to have succumbed to Boring Main Character Syndrome. I'll be honest in that I wasn't entirely fond of her before, but she used to be at least #4/#3 on my list of favorite Mane Six ponies, instead of being #6.

Honestly,as much as I love Twilight's personality in S1 and S2,I don't mind her becoming more regal and such now.She is supposed to become a princess after all,and I highly doubt they'd want a cynical and sarcastic princess around in court and such. While it would very hilarious to see that happen,I have zero expectations of Twilight regressing back into her old personality. If they do add some more of her old personality back, great. If not, well, that's a damn shame then, but not surprising in my book.

To be honest, this feels like a development of her character. She's a princess now, she's developed the characteristics to be one such as becoming more "stable" (I guess less dorky?) and less sarcastic. She seems like a much better leader than she was in seasons one and two.

Now, that doesn't mean her old personality shouldn't appear slightly from time to time. Her old personality is still a part of her, and probably will always be some small part of her.

So no, I don't miss the old twilight much.

I might be wrong and please correct me if I am, but her scarcasm seemed totally for the viewers comedic enjoyment and not something that was apparent to the other characters. I can't remember any of the mane 6 calling her out for her scarcasm, or being cynical, except maybe for Spike. She was called out for her need for logic and logical reasoning for an event a la Pinky sense. I guess my point is that the writers never made her scarcasm a point of contention between her and her friends. I can't even remember many times that Twillight had personality conflicts with her friends. The other five had many more conflicts with each other. I think the current Twilight is the real one for good or bad.
