An Open Letter to Sethisto, Head of Equestria Daily

You can read it in full on my blog.

I decided to make a thread about it because I feel like opening a discussion that doesn't solely concern musicians, but also fans would be helpful. Largely because, though you may not know it, the most popular sites controlling the exposure of content screws fans too by preventing good music to be discovered and enjoyed.

It's time for brony music exposure to go niche. An over-glorified news blog like EqD and an unreliable, popularity-contest media aggregate site like Everfree Network can no longer be trusted with highlighting brony music.

It's common knowledge that Seth can be extremely petty. I have a friend that posted a fanfic that was, well, not up to a lot of people's standards and it was posted to EQD and received a very low star rating, and was eventually omitted from their archives. Years later, after he improved, he submitted more work and Seth tried to torpedo his fic without actually reading it. I don't know if his later work was accepted or not, but the mere fact that Seth went out of his way to sink someone else's work without ever actually giving it a chance or even looking at it is atrocious given the amount of weight and power EQD wields in deciding the fate of art in this community.

I don't think EQD is the problem, or even Seth for that matter, but rather the fact that they are the only site of their caliber and THE undisputed hub of all things brony. Other fandoms have a multitude of sites that serve the same purpose as EQD, but in ours it's the only one.

I agree with this, at least in the general sense. I believe that EQD--and FIMfiction for that matter--are popular due to a lack of serious competition rather than their merits. In my opinion, both sites share a similar problem: they look good, but the way they present content is very flawed, and they're holding themselves back by not taking their experience to the next level.

With so many other resources available to today's bronies, Equestria Daily is no longer the go-to place for anything: not music, not art, and certainly not fanfiction. But so far, no all-encompassing network has stepped up to fill its intended role.

For those of us here it's easy to participate and at least be aware of the other sites and places to visit, but I know a lot of bronies IRL that don't participate much online, and their only connection to the larger community is through EQD. When I mentioned I wrote a fanfic, their first question was if it made it to EQD, when I told them that I hadn't heard back from them yet, they said that was a shame. It's definitely not as important as it used to be, but that's like saying Coca Cola isn't as big as it used to be. It might be true, but it's still a monstrous giant.

I don't even know what the go to places for fanfiction are, aside from EQD and FimFic. If you know of any, please let me know. Not because I'm out to prove a point, but because my work desperately needs more exposure and all is quiet on the EQD front.

Perhaps, but it's easily accessible and allows bronies old and new to quickly find and digest a lot of content.  The larger a site gets, the more impossible it becomes to satisfy everyone's requests.

I don't even look for fanfics on EQD; there's just too much great stuff that never sees the light of day there. Pony Fiction Archive and Fanfiction.net are two vital alternatives to FIMfiction. PFA is more humble, for lack of a better word. Unlike FIM they're not a huge community that screens all its stories (an easily misused principle) and always has some controversy going on; they just publish pony fics. Fanfiction.net is not as flashy or exclusive, but it's more user-friendly and displays more search results in less space.

Frankly, I plan to publish on both of them and bypass FIMfiction entirely.
