100 beasts kaidou 321 March 14, 2013 Share March 14, 2013 I mean not that I hate them, but I find them annoying. But it seems like I am the only one who dislikes them, Now before you hate on me let me explain. They are Mary and Gary sues, before you say they dint have enough time to show there flaws I would say that they got much more time than alot of characters who have both their flaws and positives, Also I hate how SA is the leader of the roysal gaurds but dint do shit to protect Equestria so far and he let himself be mindbucked by Chrysalis, Also I hate his attitude. As for Cadence...Why in the world is she an Alicorn while Blueblood wasnt? Why does she declare herself the princess of The Crystal Kingdom without even asking the Crystal ponies. Also they are the friends of the canonly foreveralone pre Ponyvill Twilight. Blueblood's only fan in the whole wide Fandom
Shanks 10,816 March 14, 2013 Share March 14, 2013 You are certainly not the only one that dislikes them the friend that introduced me to ponies isn't really a big fan of them either for many of the same reasons you mentioned particularly about them in his opinion being a Mary Sue and a Gary Stu. Cadence wasn't originally supposed to be an alicorn but Hasbro wanted her to be one because they thought it would sell more toys and Blueblood isn't because a Blueblood toy alicorn or not probably wouldn't sell all that well. It is not exactly the best reason ever but until they give us another reason in the show that is all we have got. As for me I like them but I wouldn't consider myself to be a hard core fan of either or them as there really isn't anything about either them that has wowed enough to love them yet. The Crystal Maiden 221 March 14, 2013 Share March 14, 2013 Well, I have to admit that I really really love Shining Armour, but I agree with you about Cadence. Why does she get so much attention and priveleges?? She's not THAT special. British Pegasister, aspiring writer, and dedicated Rainbow Dash fan. Descant 1,898 March 14, 2013 Share March 14, 2013 (edited) This isn't the first time I've seen a topic like this floating around, so no, you're not alone. Personally I don't think of them as Gary Stu and Mary Sue; I just think they haven't gotten enough screen time to develop real, identifiable personalities. Cadance was originally a unicorn, yes, but Hasbro forced alicornism to rectify the pink abominations that were supposed to be Celestia that they were selling. Besides, without Shining Armour we would have no 'Twilie' and no Liquid Pride. Conclusion? I like them. Edited March 14, 2013 by Flareon 2 Find the Heart of the Jungle! Still searching for players! Champion RD92 8,658 March 14, 2013 Share March 14, 2013 This is funny because I made a topic a while ago called "Am i the only one who likes Cadence and Shining Armor?" I like them a lot, probably because i loved the season 2 finale, it was my favorite episode of the show ever.
Dr. Love 88 March 14, 2013 Share March 14, 2013 I agree with you about Cadence, she's one of the only characters in Friendship is Magic that i don't like, and it's usually really hard for me to dislike any character in FIM, even Diamond Tiara has her role, having Cadence just seems pointless to me "Please, call me your little snow bunny" ~Mizore

The Likes of Blueblood or Sombra needed more screen time to have a better views at their personalitys, sure but SA and Cadence got 10 more times and we got no flaws for them Blueblood's only fan in the whole wide Fandom
mycarhasaMoustache 449 March 14, 2013 Share March 14, 2013 I dont dislike them or like them. I dont hate them but I haven't connected to them in the same way as other characters since we know very little about them due to lack of screen time but to me they are borderline background ponies.
Freewave 1,145 March 14, 2013 Share March 14, 2013 (edited) There's not much to them as characters yet, but wadddya do? They've both had limited screen time. Cadence is Princess of the crystal ponies because Celestia appointed her there. Simple as that. Seeing that that place was invisible for hundreds of years means she might as well have been sent to Idaho to rule. Again Cadence has taken a lot of abuse over the series so far (kept in a dungeon, had her fiance been intimate with a queen changeling, drained of energy by the protective spell protecting her new kingdom from Sombra, and finally been thrown like a football by her husband). Not to mention she has to do that sunshine chant everytime she sees Twi now (imagine that during royal gatherings). I can't say she's had that much of a pampered life yet.....You should be happy Edited March 14, 2013 by Freewave I have made brony music since 2011. I like all kinds of music and genres. silvadel 1,393 March 14, 2013 Share March 14, 2013 As strong as Shining Armor is as former head of the Royal Guard in Canterlot, you get to see him in casual clothes with a whistle training athletes for the Equestria Games. I think we know who wears the pants in that relationship. Silvadel, the Pegasus of Insight.
Metaright 76 March 14, 2013 Share March 14, 2013 Well, Shining Armor did erect that shield in the season two finale, so he wasn't entirely useless. As for the two in general, though, the team could certainly do worse with characters that, to my understanding, they were forced to include. Nohbdy 4,108 March 15, 2013 Share March 15, 2013 I think they're generally well written and interesting, but my one big gripe is how suddenly they were introduced. Shining Armor and Cadance are supposed to be some of the most significant figures in Twilight's childhood, but they're never even mentioned until the Season 2 finale. It's understandable, given that they weren't even conceived until Hasbro decided to sell some more toys, but are we really expected to believe that Twilight never talked about them in Ponyville? Considering the emotional attachment that Twilight supposedly has toward them, and the importance they have in Equestria as a whole, it's baffling how they weren't even hinted at. Introduction aside, I like Cadance and Shining Armor now that they're established themselves in the cast. I'm looking forward to seeing more of them in the future.
Dr. Eggnog 203 March 15, 2013 Share March 15, 2013 You're not the only one that dislikes them, but I like both characters, particulary Cadence, and the season 2 finale is one of my favorite episodes. I love you.
Scootalove 10,689 March 15, 2013 Share March 15, 2013 I think it is because, they didn't have enough time to develop as characters. They were only introduced in the Season 2 finale, and now at least they have a backstory unlike Sombra. They are starting to at least be important I think. Hasbro had to think of making Cadence an alicorn and introduce Shining Armor as Twilight's brother. Pretty much, they did it for their precious toy market. Anyway, Celestia gave Princess Cadence the chance to be the princess of the Crystal Kingdom. Shining Armor might be the head of the guards but, he can't always protect Equestria because the guard's soul purpose is to protect and defend Celestia. In conclusion, I like them for now. Now, while you excuse me I'm going to shed some liquid pride. Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules
Tall_But_Short_37 233 March 15, 2013 Share March 15, 2013 Shining Armor needs a way more epic role. So far all we've seen him do is create magic shields, get his butt kicked by Chrysalis and Sombra, and throw his wife off a balcony. If SA is leader of the royal guard and brother of an Alicorn princess, I want to see some crazy magic and power out of him. I want to see why he was chosen as the lead defender of the kingdom. poniesforfun 716 March 15, 2013 Share March 15, 2013 (edited) There's probably a rule that only females can be alicorn in Equestria thus Blueblood or King Sombra weren't alicorns even if they are royalty. I don't know why you think they're Mary Sues. They did thwart Chrysalis but that wasn't possible without the help of the mane six. And they didn't really do anything but a rodeo show in the Crystal Empire, the Crystal Heart alone did the trick in defeating King Sombra. If they were Mary Sues Cadence wouldn't have so many scenes of appearing exhausted and weak and Shining Armor was captured by Chrysalis' spell and beaten by King Sombra pretty easily. I don't hate them it's just that they don't have much substance but that's because they're more supporting characters used for making new plots than central characters. Shining Armor needs a way more epic role. Well he can definitely do the barrier spell better than Twilight if he can keep it covering Canterlot for days. Twilight takes some time to set it up and can only surround her and her friends with it which probably takes concentration to hold up. It's also apparent the barrier spell is a Twilight and Shining Armor only spell since Celestia asked Shining Armor to keep it up.
