Quite fed up with parents who let the video games do the parenting

Bah! My six year old cousin is so obsessed with video games it's not even funny. He always says his reasoning for coming to our house is to play the wii, or lately, mom's been making me give him my ipad, which I regularly kill before he comes here, and then tell them it takes HOURS to recharge (which it actually does, but that's not the point.)

Jesus, what happened to kids playing outside in the snow, or getting some action figures or stuffed animals or plastic toys?

Idk I mean I play a pretty good bit of video games and I spend a good bit of time on the computer, but I do also try and spend time doing other things, such as practicing my trumpet and guitar and I have other matters to attend to aswell, including school.

Its good in moderation actually, as video games are helpful for hand eye coordinator, and technology is something to be knowledgeable about in this day and age as it gets ever more important.

However like anything there is a to much for it.

This annoys me as well. I once went to my friend's friend's house and I was shocked when I went in. All the kids in the house were glued to their television and the mom didn't do a thing. Another thing that annoys me is when people come over to my house and ask to use my electronic devices. And sometimes they bring their own devices and just ask for my wifi password the moment they walk through the door and just use that the whole time they're at my house.

It also annoys me when they say all I care about is video games, yet I don't glue myself to the Tv at all.

Well, it's the same way for television, or anything really, in my opinion. I don't think it's so much that the kids stay on the video games all day as that the parents are letting something other than themselves spend time with their kids, leaving the kids without much parental guidance and input. To me, that's the real problem.

However like anything there is a to much for it.

Yep!

Except for ponies, of course.

Yeah, I know that. I'm not saying kids shouldn't play video games. But the amount of video games the 4-10 year old kids in my family play is disturbing. He'll come to our house and kill my ipad within two hours. So I've taken to every time I learn he's coming, making a big deal out of saying I've killed it, and that it takes HOURS to recharge. This time however, I "accidentally" don't have the wall plug totally plugged in. I'm tired of having to share every single video game thing I own with that brat. It's so bad that THAT is his reason for coming to our house, besides fishing. I think it irritates me so badly with him, is because my mom favors the brat, so he is just that at our house, a spoiled brat who asks for anything and everything, and gets it.

Well if hes simply going there to play Wii then maybe you should just tell him he can't play it or anything. Or maybe make a trade for spending X time here for X time on the Wii.

Just a suggestion, while I don't know how much exactly hes playing he should atleast value family time and not just come for a game.

Plus being spoiled isn't a good thing either.

Oh no, I get that, but I don't think it's necessarily the video game's fault. Like you said, it's the parents; instead of letting video games, or anything else for that matter, "parent" their child, so to speak, they should be doing it themselves.

Sadly, it's not my wii, but it's in my room, since I used to be the main one playing it, and now mom refuses to let me put the dumb thing back in the living room, but I still have to share my room EVERY time with those brats because "mom's" wii is in my room.

Oh i see. Wait so is the other kids your brothers or something? Or are they cousins? I'm a little confused.

If you want you can try to have a mature conversation with your mom about disallowing them access to it or something, but in the end theres not really any way you can make her do anything.

Would it be as much of a problem if the Wii was in the living room and not yours?

My second-cousins.

And not it wouldn't be as much of a problem if it was in the living room. I'd PREFER that. I'd just play it when I want when my mom takes her naps.

And I've tried to tell her I don't want him playing my iPad, she throws in my face that she gave it to me (I paid for the stupid thing when she got it free), and that I need to "stop being so rude," because "he's just a little boy".

It's not the video games fault. It's not like the digital age is here to steal your children. It's lazy parenting, plain and simple. I grew up playing video games, but my parents would limit it. They would spend time with me, my dad would play catch with me outside, I would ride a bike; typical kid stuff.

A lot of parents aren't willing to admit they are the problem here, and it sickens me when they try and shift the blame on something else. It's the same thing with violence in video games. It is your job as a parent to keep tabs on what your child is playing, you didn't have to buy him that M rated game. It's not the games fault, the company isn't trying to corrupt our youth, it's the damn parents.

Yup. Oh VIDEO GAMES CAUSE THE INCREASE IN VIOLET CRIMES!

NO! You and your crappy parenting caused your kid to go out and rob someone, not some video game. Christ, I played resident evil and james bond and stuff when I was young. Do I want to go shoot people because of it? NOPE! Because I was raised semi-properly.

I see no problem with it as long as the child doesn't get addicted to the games.

When a kid is younger, he or she definitely should be moderated on how many computer games he or she plays. If a parent doesn't do that, the parent is just lazy. :/

Later when he or she's a teen though, I think other factors should govern time, such as grades or how many extracurricular things he or she's doing. (Computer really does effect grades, especially comp. addiction.) If the person doesn't need set computer limits and can hold good grades (relative to the person we're speaking of) at the time, that means the parent did at least something right.

He is obsessed is the thing. ._. He starts sobbing when the games go dead. It's so freaking pathetic and it makes me want to smack his parents right upside their stupid heads. And I get sick of parents who give their kids games to shut them up rather than spend ACTUAL quality time with them. Like, take your kid to the park or to a movie or play a board game with them or something. Something that will actually make them THINK maybe. Don't just hand them a controler to shut them up.

Did you try pointing it out to the parents, or is your relationship with them the type that would make you look rude if you did?

(Aka just pointing out the kid may have a problem, not necessarily their parenting skills.)

Well, video games are... not gonna lie a pretty large part of my life. But I never go over a family member's house to play games, but my aunt and uncle do like gaming so from time to time we play together, but only if both of us want, otherwise it's nice family bonding time with us, no matter what we do we always end up having fun.

For example I went there last weekend and I got my uncle to play The Walking Dead game and he loved it, I had just as much fun watching him play as I did playing! But yeah, even gaming can be used to a family bonding advantage, though there should be time for regular stuff to.

I grew up being obsessed with video games (I had plenty of toys too) and I don't remember spending too much quality time with my parents either (might be because I was the middle child) and I turned out sorta ok (so far). Of course, too much of anything can be a bad thing. That doesn't mean I didn't get kicked off every once in  a while.

I had a situation where my room was the "entertainment room" of the house so every time my cousins came over, they would always barge into my room since it had the gamecube and toys and boardgames. I wasn't too bothered by it though since I always enjoy being able to play those multiplayer games with others.

I would play with him, if I had any multiplayer games. :\ I used to have a sport game thing, but it's gotten lost at some point and I don't know where it went off to. Probably loaned it to someone and never got it back like is usual in our family.

And yes, if I pointed it out, my mom would go after me, and his parents would blow it off.

Some people would say I was obsessed with video games but frankly, if you asked me to go to the pool or the park, I would do it.  I wasn't glued at the T.V and my mother did spend time with me, even if most of the time I played alone.  Video games are good but I think it's rude to go to someone's house only to play their games.  When I play games with my friends, either I invite them or they invite me to do so.  I agree that today's kids don't get enough time with their parents :\

Whoa bro. Whoa.

Putting aside the fact that video games improve strategy, and one or two other things, video games let people meet each other.

I know half my friends over games (because in real life i'm antisocial because I don't act like a hooker like most people at my school do)

However, I do see what you're getting at. America and it's population are getting fat. People say it's because of video games, and that's HALF true. Video games are fun and all, but the other half of it is the parents. Most parents of obese children really couldn't give a buck what their kid eats, says, plays, and watches. Also kids play videogames to take a break from school. School is the most boring thing on the planet to kids, because adults aren't incorporating technology into the lessons. No kid likes to listen to some stuffy old 40 year-old standing in front of a board and explaining a whole bunch of stuff that the really couldn't give a buck about.

If you take a look at this video, it explains where I got one or two of my ideas from.

Thank you for listening/reading my post.

Yes I play games. Yes I listen to bands inspired by games and bands whose music is an homage to gaming. Yes I occasionally watch tv. Yes I'm aware this is "antisocial". I also play brikwars (basically warhammer 40k with legos), D&D, and the occasional game on this here forum. I'm a nerd, and I think school sucks (I've learned more on the internet than I EVER will in a class room). You ask what happened to playing "outside"? Outside evolved. The real world is fun, but being to step into an interactive book or movie will always be far more entertaining. I'll still go outside and mess around with friends (water gun fights get quite epic around here), but it's not "being raised" by a game any more than going outside is being raised by plants.

I quite agree. My 6-year-old cousin (we have so much in common! :D) plays his Wii, like, everyday. You cannot get him to do his homework, before he rushes to his DS. You can't even SUGGEST that he plays outside with his brother before he wants to check his Pokemon. And my aunt doesn't do a thing about it. :/

I don't agree with the gamer lifestyle.  Though I used to live it.  I gave up on video games.  I agree though, my little brother spends over 4 hours every day on COD and Gmod.  I can't get him off of it.

What is this "gamer lifestyle" you speak of? I've never heard of, and I'm a pretty big gamer... I don't mean to antagonize you, but I've never heard of any sort of lifestyle other than playing games as much as you feel is fun for you.
