Although I've never played it before, I'd really like to try it.

I've never played it before because there's no-one around where I live who plays and I didn't want to buy materials for a game I'd never be able to play.

What are your opinions on it?

All the materials that a basic player would need are paper/pen(cil), a few various sets of dice and a good DM, right?

Yeah, there are some knowledge you'd need beforehand though.

 

It's pretty fun with minimal supplies too.

(I recommend only pencils, not pens)
