It wasn't exactly unpredictable, which was why the fandom has been flooded with Alicorn Twilight fanfics and fanart for a long time. It seemed pretty inevitable to me after the premiere of Season 3. Wouldn't have minded a bit more build up to the thing, but... can't always get what you want.

Well, I honestly thought something would change like that. But, I never knew that she would turn into an alicorn princess. But, I don't think it's THAT bad. It opens up a new storyline at least! I was guessing Hasbro couldn't find any ideas,

I did see it happening eventually but not in season 3 and not handled nearly as poorly as it has been handled so far. With the exception with some hints in the premier and obviously the finale the season had almost nothing to do with alicorn Twilight making the reveal quite jarring which was only reinforced with a rushed finale that made no sense and seemed like a mere formality until the coronation at the end. This turd can thankfully still be polished as there is still far more that we don't know than we do though so lets hope this all goes well in season 4.

Yeah, it was pretty obvious that Twilight would become a princess someday. The shock, I believe, comes from Twilight being crowned so soon, and in a very poorly executed manner.

While I don't know what your poll wants me to say, I must say that I also thought she would become an Alicorn before season 3 started. But that was not because I figured something out, it was because of all the Twilicorn rumors going on everywhere. Plus one of the writers tweeted "in season 3, Twilight gets..." and everyone would make either pregnant jokes or say wings.

 

This made the whole Twilight-with-wings rumor seem quite legit and I believed in it.

I wasn't too surprised actually. I haven't liked the show for too long; I think I only got into it when Season Three started. But once I watched that first episode of the season, I predicted it. I didn't think it would happen so early, but I knew it would eventually happen.

   I had a hunch that it would happen while I was watching the show. I mean, the main character is a powerful magic-user that does a lot more than an average pony (referencing the adventure arcs specifically). Turns out that hunch was right.

You mean before the Alicorn Twilight rumors started flying around, planting the idea in my head? Honestly, no. I don't remember seeing anything that made me think "yep, alicorn princess is coming soon".  Even now, I still feel like the whole thing came straight out of left field.

You are not alone on this. Many seem to forget the tons of Alicorn Twilight fanart from all the way back in season one. When the whole book thing was shown in The Crystal Empire the first and dominant predictions I saw were Alicorn Twilight. Then there are all the hints of it in the series. The fact that Twilight's Element was a crown whilst her friends are necklaces. The very fact that she is the direct apprentice to Celestia. The whole allusion towards Twilights the interwoven destiny of the mane six and Twil.ght's boundless magical potential in Cutie Mark Chronicles ect.
